We are rcry often asked by eastern in qutri, rbout the water power of this t ity its probable extent, etc. We Lave never made an estimate, properly deduct-' ed, of the amount of water available for Powe?at the falls' of : this city, but, when taken with the St Anthony fells, of Mm , nwota, which are acknowledged : to be nnsurjxissed on the Eastern sloK of the Kocky Mountains, from our knowledge of ; that, and this; both acquired by residence; W can say with truthfulness that t. An thony uno comparison to the "Willamette. J Here we have a bold face to the front of ' the fall, averaging 24 f eet perpendicular, of rolid, imperishable rock. The surface 'of the fall is circular, and tbout 1000 feet in extent. Above this the water never at tains a depth of more than a few feet. IMow. the river is about 500 feet in width, and the banks are abrupt walls of solid rock for the most part. In 186G the Peo ple's Transportation Company made an improvement on the hast side of the falls for purposes of navigation. This improve ment com-istsof a basin on y large enough toHoat their steamers, aud it does not tjse in more than a fraction of the water ronvertnble to manufacturing, and yet, Mr. Bclden, a competent surveyor, states that by deepening those works six feet, jower caii be obtained to drive ninety factories such as we now have in the city -to-wit: 12-set woolen, and 5-run flour ing mills Aside from Oregon City there are several other places in Clackamas county that boast of much more than or dinary water-privileges. Oswego and Milwaukie, for instance, can drive more machinery by water than both St. An thony and Minneapolis. . . Clackamas Count v Lime. With all due repect for .Mr. Weddle, owner of the Glad Tidings Lime bed in this county we do aincerely wish man of moans had the con trol of that property. It is a fact, well es tablished, that lime can be had at Glad Tidings equal to the best .Santa Cruz. Will not some men, of associated capital, take (hold of this lime and develop it? Thousand of dollars are annually sent out of the .State, and the sum increases every year, which might just as well be raved as not, by purchasing such articles at home, as nature has left to us. Tiik Clackamas Coitkr. The vein of copper found recently in this county by Mr. F. M. Shaver, is turning out to be a inagnificeut affair. Large specimens of almost pure metal have been found. The locality is close by the Willamette river. and liipping is easily obtaind. It will i prove to be better than a gold mint for j our people. Just above this discovery is ! i i i i t- i a valuable bed of iron, equal to Oswego, j and quite as extensive. Who can predict ! the benefits to accrue to the public from Mich diicov erles T Ci.VckXmas CoUNTV Coal. With perseverance of a X '.poU'oii. p'.tr old es- j teeined friend Frank Cooper is knocking j about among the hills of Putte Civek, quite independent, because he has coal in abun- d nce. We are v'-ry sur'e that trC coal j from liut'ti CVeefi will jfy"ve equal to any j fver used in Orcgopf It was tented at Portland last year, dnd people there read their eHlliing gossip by the light of gas SMif from 'coal taken out of the mine in iLt'cfcahias county although they might V6t have t'e'en a, time: rare of the foet at the Ct Vckam.vs County Ikon. We are glad io hear that at Inst Calit'oruians have re ported to Oregon for iron. The stock last year imported ":itoSu'n Francisco for the purpose of Bir-'ug the. iron market, is now exhausted, and Oswego pig is sought at a fair valuation. The works at Oswego will not remain idle a very great while i longrr. Ci ackamas County STONE-It'a admitted j that U building stone taken out of quar- ; ries in thii county cannot be beaten. We objerve that Ex-Mayor Ralston is putting down a stone walk front of his desirable property on Main street, of this material, kurge quantifies -of this stone is used in Portland annually, and this year the de mand for it is greater than ever before. We hope that our people will make a decided effort to aid this road. God helps those who help themselves. Mitchell and Hon Lansing Stout. addres.-ed the oeo,,!,, nf th.. f'm.ri House in this city on Thursday .evening last; presenting the matter of our rail road to the public in a very plain manner. The people of Oregon, are waking up to the interests of the road, and wa say that Clackamas county is asleep if she does not come to a realizing sense of the situation. This county ought to guarantee the in terest on $.30,000 of bonds, for at least ten years. Applause. Reed iu his speech here on Wednesday stated that his opponent, Hon. A. C. Gibbs, lately voted for a Democrat. This brought down the house. The very floor seemed to go down with the hearty knocks it got. After the applause sub sided Reed continued, and said : " I do net state this to be a fact ; it may not be true." Imagine the pheelings of the faith ful who lost all their thunder. A little son of Capt. Geo. A. Pease, on Tuesday evening last ignited a can of cord oil in this city, and in his efforts to blow it out, burned his face considerably though not in a manner as to result in a disfiguration. Coal oil that will flash from a lighted match is dangerous under aiir circumstances, and ought not to be tolerated. We c;nnot help but think that these views, exhibited in the older States, would convey instantly a better idea of the grand and the beautifully picturesque scenery of Oregon, than volumes of detailed description. Mr. Watkins, iu procuring and distributing these pictures over the world, has done a good thing for Oregon, while he has. also, we hope, hit upon the foundation of a fortune for himself. Four ounces dissolved in a gallon of aquafortis, with a little extract of Juniper and nitro glycerine added, and applied with a rotary scrubbing-brush, will re move every appearance of Democracy in less than forty-eight hours. The Unionist is informed that the inventor has the edi tor of the Albany Democrat under treat ment ; but it is a hard case, aud he will probably have to blast. Home Again.--Our fellow-townsman S. This popular preparation contains no mineral of ;:iiy kind ; no deadly botanical element ; no fiery excitant ; but is a combination of the extracts of rare balsamic herbs nnd plants, with the purest and mildest of all diffusive fctimulantsi. The week stomach is rapidly invigorated, and the appetite restored by this tonic, and hence it works wonders in crises of Dyspepsia, and in less confirmed forms of Indigestion.
