DeODOKIZATION OJ" V ULCAXIZED Rubber. The offensive sulphurous smf of india rubber coods is a serious drawback upon their other vise great convenience. Mr. Stephen UourneQan Englishman, has patent ed a process of removing this odor by treating the fabrics in a heated chain ber with charcoal, and in preference, animal charcoal, as more rapid in its effects. The operation may bo con ducted simultaneously with the pulverizing, the apparatus required being very simple. Extract of Hemlock Bark. In the northern part of Maine great quantities of hemlock abouud, but the distaste to tanneries is so great that the transportation consumes all the profits of the bark. It is now proposed to make an extract of the 6ark, in which form it may be taken to Boston and other cities on the seaboard, and sold at a large profit. Two cords of bark are so coneentra- ted as to be contained in a torty gal lon cask. O s q Profits it.om Hens. Preservation of Milk. Gypsum, if mixed with a certain quantity of water and so&ked in a bath of hot pitch, parts with its water, and fib sorbiug piteli in corresponding quan tity, forms a substance so hard that it will receive a polish, and can be used in the manufacture of useful and ornamental articles. About Gcvrks. In a recent ad dress 4r. A. S. Fuller, author of the Grape Cultu'fist, says he has long Osir.ce comedo the conclusion that there is vejy little positive knowi edgeconnectcd with grape culture, and what, there is, was and is ob tained by local experience. Modest Request. At the Cal'u iforuia State Fair a bottle of pickles was entered on which was a label bearing these words: " Our eomnlU rnents to the State Agricultnn 1 So ciety. Please award first premium to these pickles." To this was ap pended the name of the exhibitor. Food and Warmth. It should qQ always be remembered that animals allowed to stand and shiver in the open air, or in a barn full of cracks and holes, need and eat a very large amount of extra food to keep up bodily heat,Jiesh and comfort. 0Sur3DTL(T f'ou Buffalo Roues. Amazon Valley. Frof. Ag:tsiz says he found the- valley of the Ama zon uncommonly fertile, and its cli mate very healthy. Although the territory of the United States is so much greater than England, the live stock is by no means in the same proportion. The cows and other horned cattle, according to the cen sus of 1880. amounted to 17,000.000 about double the- estimated number of the United Kingdom two and one-fourth million ot the cattle were, returned as working oxen. The sheep, on the other hand, fell short of the estimated English number by two and one half millions ; while the pigs exceeded by ten times our number, reaching the fabulous num ber of 33,000,000, or just about as many pigs as people. The bulk of the cattle I saw were of the short horn type. Alderneys and Ayrshires are much in repiKe for dairy pur pt)ses ; but, as in England, the short horn is the prevailing breed. The sheep of America are of a very non descript character, generalv miser ably bred and ill-looking things, about half the Mze of the English. Flocks of Leicesters, Southdowns, and Merinoes are to be found ; but they afe exceptional. 'I hero is one matter, an important one t an En glishman, viz: the quality ofthemeat. Whether it be the climate, the food, or the cooking, or all three, 1 don't know ; hut the b -ef and mutton are most inferior, tasteless and tough it. the extreme. P ik is tolerably good. Tile national importance o paying more attention to shtep is being- urged upon the American farmer by the daily, as v 1 1 as tht agticuitural ptess, an increase in tin supply of wool being deemed an ab solute necessity 5 000 000 steriinsr having been paid to Eegland tor woolen goods in lMfio. The- draught horses used in America are much smalier, very different from our En glish type. They are well invd, clean lodged and active. The K u tuekey thorough-bred," as it is cab ed, is the favorite breed. I saw an entire horse of this bretd oi the farm of Mr. Em. ry Cobb. f K k.-koe. Illinois, he was, as our Secretary would say, " all over bke u hauler. " I could have picked out of Mr. Cobb's team a :ood many ' wcighr carriers," which would bring fancy prices at Tatt. rsall's. I did not see in the whole of my travels what I call a food stout draught now, such as I win toe pr zt; vvoh in my own conn trv. At the railway stations in Philadelphia are to be seen horses of the cart, breed, " raised," as I was informed, in Ohio and Pennsyl vania. When (he America' s grow l;ry,er crops, as 1 am sure they mitiht do, tliev will want l iv r norses in their reaping maohi'es; ami when they stir their land deeper whirl) I am sure they orght to do, they will, if tiny d-not adopt steam, requir horses o greater weight. In s line districts I visited, horses are S'jod with malleable cast iron shoes, which are fastened without the use of mtils. They simply clip the (oot, and are secured by rivets. I have a st eeimen on the table which I in tend to try. Dairying is an impor tant branch of rural economy in America,. A very novel feature is the introduction of the factory system, in Oneida county, N. Y ,there are about forty cheese manufactories, or" Associated Dairvs," as thev are called, having 16.000 cows. I have only time to glance at the subject. The advantages claimed are that the farmer's amity is relieved of a good deal of drudgery ; that by the em ployment of a skillful superintendent a more uniform and better quality, at less cost, is obtained, and, of course, higher prices realized. Messrs. Moore, cheese merchants in Buffalo, told me that for two or three years their shipments of factory cheese had commanded the highest price in the Liverpool marlfet. If cold water be poured on roasted collee finely ground, such as is gen eraiy used with boiling water, a con siderable quantity of gas is generaly evolved, about equal in volume to the amount of coffee used. If a bot tle be half filled with this ground coffee, and cold water be then poured in until the cork is reached, which is to prevent tne escape of the gas, a violent explosion sufficient to force the cork out of the bottle, or even to break the latter, will result Chahcoal fu 1 ukkeys. A re cent experiment has heel, trod io feeding charcoal for fattening turkevs Two lots of tour eac h were treated alike, except for one tot finely pu ver iZfd charcoal was mixed with maslnd potatoes and nv-al, on whicu tlu v were leo, ana oioKen pieces or coal also plentifully supplied. The diK fereuce in weight vva-. ot.e and a halt pounds each in lavor of the fouls supplied with coal, and the fl.-sh was uperior in tend'-mess and flavor. Labor at Agricultural Colleges. Tile i ilien ef the Pennsylvania Agricultural College have a'taudot.ed the svsteir. of eomoelliitg he students to devote p :;rt of the time to labor upon the farm. Both education ami the work performed have beet) im perfect, and the sy-teni is considered a failure. Hereafter the faims is to be worked by skided hired labor, and the students ale to devote the r time to their studies.
