It has adjourned with out'passiug a single measure of inn portauce to the country. .Their continual efl'ort to tamper with-the tariff only serves to keep the busi ness of the country in a state of uncertainty. 2To promise made beofre the election has beent ful filled. They promised to reduce the surplus in the treasury by paying off the public debt, instead of doing 60 they have allowed the amount to increase in thelrjasury to tne enormous amount of 484, 856, 903, a much larger amount than ever was in Jbe treasury since the war. A res olution was passed by the last congress authorizing the secretary of treasury to pay a portion of th'fl surplus on the nations debt fc t the President killed the iv-bolution, by refusing sig( nature. The Democratic ma jority tried to abolish the duties on wool altogether but were "defeat ed by the Republicans and a few Democrats. The imports of wool during the year ending June 30th, the first of a Democratic admin, istration was 40. 968, 570 pounds of clothingnvool against 11. 475, 889 under President Arthur lust year. In other grades the in crease was greater, our banking system was denounced by their speakers and prefs, j-et not a move has been made to change the present banking law. The fact is that no improvement could bo made "on any of these measures. So perfect were they under Re publican rule. That Trout. It should have been preserved as one of the great curiosities of this age as weH as one of the greatest achievmouts of the present' ad ministration. iNevcr before in the hibtory of our nation did a President yank a pound -trout from its watery domicle without the aid of his combats. The manulacture of beet sugar is soon to be a very important indnstry in the United States. Iu California it has already becomo a staple production, and at Alvan ado, that state, it is the chiel product There the farmers calcu late on making a net profit of 20 per acre in its culture and they are seldom disappointed. The climate of California is such that sugar beet seed can bo planted at any time irom the first of March to the last of May and the harvesting season, lasts- iour months. The root is easily kept four months after harvesting, thus giving ample time for work ing the crop into sugar. Other I climates are not so- favorable as that of California, yet whenever the cultivotion of the beet for sugar has Loen thoroughly tried it has proved successful. Try it ye Oregoniaus. . Tom Alc Intyre, the Chester6eld of Shakesperi an wiu ,will amuse in bis own quaint, inimitable style; "Billy Rollins, one ot the brightestjesters that have ever donned cap and bells, will vor'lize the late t comic songs, t h r.b tickling stor ies and introduce his comic little trained pigj'Ben Butler." Ten other high priests of Momus will participate in the revelries. Any clown that springs a musty, hoary headed chestnut, with whiskers on it, is subject to a fine of S10. A new feature in connection with clowning will be introduced in the shape of a "chestnut register," a clock shaped affair, the bands of which record with unerring accuracv ever venerable joke which the clowns, while in a rem mescenL mood, may unconsciously utter. Everybody will want to see the working of the "chestnut register." It should be the aim of every farmer to keep his laud in good healthy condition. It is much easier to keep laud up than it is to bring it up when once it has run down. The loss of time as well as the loss of crop are to bo taken into consideration. Ou sideo'the application of barn-yard manure, there is nothing equal to clover, plowed in as a green crop- occa sionally. We know that it looks to some as an extravagant plan to plow iu a crop of clover, but one trial will satisfy the-farmer that it will pay him a hundred fold, and it will require no argument there after to open his eys to its value. Sax Francisco,- Aug. 23. The Chicago & Northwestern railroad, it is Etated, have resolved on the construction of a through lino to the Pacific coast. The line has .already flHed lhe town Dousr- lass, situated, about seven miles from Port Fettorman, on banks oi the North Platte river, in Wyo ming territory, 700 miles west ot the Missouri river. In two years, it is said, the lino will be com pleted to extend from JVew York city on the Atlantic ocean to Ya quina bay on the Pacific ocean, and will connect with the Dona hue line to complete the Bystnm to San Francisco. Parties who lost goods by be. ing thrown overboard to-pave the stranded "Queen of the Pacific" at the mouth of the Columbia River about three years ago will be pleased to learn that they are to get their general averago after so long waiting. The whole amount to be disbursed is 95,- 000. Owners get 76 per cent of the amount of goods they had on board. Reduction works at Portland is an advanced step for Oregon, of which her people ought to feel proud.
