The two years just past, the finani ciaj affairs of this county have been, extravagantly, aud badly, managed, the county debt has been largely incroased, which cannot be balanced by official "exhibits" but must bo paid by the taxpayers, in hard earned dollars. This state of affairs hai been plainly illustrated in the last Democratic county conven tion, whore the most competent men for district offices were set aaide, and tho most incompetent rcived tho delegation to the state convention. Hence it is the duty of the Republicans of this county to place iu nomination rep resentative men for the county offices, men of ability, and known integrity, men whom the people will not fear to trust in the man ogement of the financial affairs of Jackson county. Monday afternoon the Supreme couri fendered a decision which settles all controversies as to whether the circuit judges elected at tho last election hold for two yeata or for tho full term of six yean. They retire from offico July next. A case was prepared in Lan county which involved tho point iu dispute. Tho county clerk, Joel "Ware, refubed to in elude in his formal notice of a geueral election, that a circuit judgo was to be voted for, W. S. Shaw, a resident of Lauo county, applied to the stato circuit court for a mandamus compelling the clerk to issue such notice. Judge Beau granted tho mandamus and the case was appealed to tho Su premo court, who sustained Judge Bean. A Boston dispatch says: It is reported that 3,000 men are at work on tho exteusion of the Cal ifornia & Oregon above Delta, and that the Southern Pacific compa. ny will exteud tho road to Straws berry valley as speedily as possi ble. The raid is to connect with tho Oregon k California tor a through rail routo from San Pram cisco to Portland, Oregon. The delay in the negotiations for the transfer of tho Oregon & Califor nia to the Southern Pacific com pany is caused by tho latter's de sire to know the legal status of such acquisition with tho government. Col. T. JL Cornelius, The Republican candidate for Governor, is one of the oldest aud best known citizens of Oregon. He was born in Missouri in 182?. Three years after his arrival in the Territory, he volunteered in the Cayuso war and was in all the actions with the Indians. In 1855 he served in the Yakima war first as Captain, and afterwards as Colonel. In 1856 he wai elected to the Territorial Council, and served until the State was ad mitted into tho TJnioa He waa then elected Stato Senator and served every sesaionuntil 1876 miss ing only one term daring the time of tho rebellion, when he served as Colonel of ft cavalry regiment, having charge of tho post at "Walla Walla. Col. Cornelius has served twice as President ot tho Senate. This brief outline of his life shows that he is a man of public affairs, thoroughly identi fied with the growth and prosper ity of tho State, and fully compe tent to diochargo tho' duties of Governor to the satisfaction of the people. He is now living ou his farm in "Washington county, and understands the farming interests of the State as well &3 any other man. Though not a man of great wealth, ho is in comfortable cir cumstances. Ho is a thoroughly honest man, of good judgment, and while not disposed to scheme himself, will not tolerate tho schemes of others which he may regard as inimical to the interests of tho State. Many of our readers will rei member that about a year ago several million gallons of whis key were shipped to Canada, "ex ported" so to speak to avoid the taxes which Congress refused to exteud the time for paying. It now turns out that it has recently been returned and bondod the same as new whiskey without the payment of tho taxeB due, and tho secretary decides that is legal and lovely, whereat a considerable howl is being raised among those who aro either interested in the collection of taxes or interfered with in business ca account of the return of the spi There is a general feeling among the manufacturers of the city that a great strike, will take place in New York about May 1st, and 100,000 men thrown out of work. At present all branches of the piano making trade and furniture makers have made a demand for shorter hours. "What the result will be remains to be Been. The ieeling among manufacturers is that they cannot comply with the requests of the unions, aud the matter may possibly end in a compromise. Sam Jones having converted a young newspaperman in Chicago, church members think he has achieved a great victory over the press and the devil. A Kansas City man hearing this report says: "A clergyman with a solt, inBinu ating tongue and pleasant address can convert a young journalist. Let him tackle the old ones.
