McDonough of Jack sonville to 2 year old fillies by Alts meat, which are ta take part ia the 2-year old celt raee next fall in this place. They are fine leoking animals, end giro promise of making good flyers in trotting races. The famous Mc Donough csare, Ribbon, is the dam of one, and the well known Slwpy Kate is the dam of the other. The filly of Ribbon is the smallest, but looks like the best for fast going. "Journal." Close Call The team belonging t Frank Ennis was frightened by a blast on Tuesday last when passing near the Sterling mine and ran away. Mr. Kuais and Tbso. Cameron were both threw n out and the latter bad his collar bone broken besides receiv ing other serious bruises. Ennis es caped without any serious injury al though he was thrown as far as Mr. Cameron, having picked eat a soft cpot to light on. It is lucky that the result isuo worse and both of the gep tlemea injured will be able to be Around again in a few days. C. Myer, the pioneer impoiter and breeder ot Percheron horses of this state, has just sold his fine young stallion "Jerome." Jerome ia a full-bloed Percheron, raised b) Mr. Myer, is nearly 5 years old, weighs over 1G00 fin., and has len said by geod judges to be the best Percheron ever bred ea this coast. His number in the Percheron Stud Keek is 1C50. The horse has been bought by Titus k Bre. of Arlington, on the Columbia river above The Dalles, and will be delivered in Purt land by Mr. Myer, wUo starts with him on the freight this week. The wouraai oi last Saturday says: The mail contract on the route from Delta to Asbtaud has been re advertk wd for bids, the dpariuient hiving discovered that an attempt has beeu tnade to put up a job iu securiug it. The present stage company will prob ably continue to run stages whether receiving the contract or not, as the company ia better off without unless cecuriog a fair price. According to bids offered, the mail carrying would not pay over three cents a pound, which is not good pay for slow freight, taking the year round, to say nothing of loss of trips by bad roads, and the coapsliion to carry tha mail in pref erence to any other businass. The Scott Valley mail contract will probab ly be awarded to Pease, wucss bid I. the lnwest offered. As Insaxe Max. Jacob Ellis, an old bacelor ulio has lived alone on hit land claim on Wagner cresk for num ber of yarc, became insaae this week, and on Wednesday evening called at O. H. Lynch's place, and told Mr. Lynch that the men at Wagner creek saw mill were trying to kill bim that they had a machine working un derground under bis cabin that would kill him. Mr. Lynch allowed him to remain at his house, but just after the house hold had retired Eths grew wild, taid "they" were after him, and rushed up stairs and out on a roof flourishing sl big kaife. Two neighbors, Messrs. Pervis and Goddard. were called, and they with Mr. Lynch, brought Ellis to Ashland in the night, keeping him at the town jn.il. About daybreak he scaped from them, and, it is supposed, ran off into the mountains back of town. Up to last eveniag no trace of him had been discovered by parties searching for him, and it is feared he has perished of cold if he remained out ever last night. 'Tidings." Religious Items Elder II. Jerry Nanan has returned from San Francisco where he purchased a large stock of new goods. Rev. Father Metayer of Albany wr in town several days this week the guest ot Father Blcnciut. The Jacksonville Turn verein intend giving an entertainment at Central Point some time next month. Treasurer Fisher this week settled Jackson county's portion of tha State tax, amounting to over 7,000. The Prohibition county convention will be held at Medford next Thursday, to nominate a full coun'y ticket. Mr. A. P. Tallent ol Wagner creek is being mentioned as a candidate for the office of County Coumis&ienor. Peter Britt took several photograph ic viewi uf the gallows and surround ings attending the execution of O'Neil. D. W. Crosby was found guilty of earn ing a concealed weopon by Justice Foudray this week and fined $10 and costs. B. F. Miller of the Ssrdins creek nurery has a very fine stock of peach trees for sale; also other first-class var ieties. C. K. Fronk, the station agent at Medford, bought a house and lot in that place of G. W. Williams last week for $900. Lyman W. Smith is taking numer ous orders for iron work usually used in ornamenting graves and gives gen eral satisfaction. Joe Hyatt has gone into the cattle business in Josephine county having purchased a band from John Bolt of Applegate this week. Roberts ii O'Neil of Medford pre cinct sold 3,000 bushels of wheat to P. W. O'.well of The Phoenix mills, and they gal GO cents a bushel for it. No need of lending off for tailor made clothing. R. N. Baker has a la ge assortment of cloths to select iroui and as a workman he is not to be excelled. County Clerk Hughes of Josephine county made us a pop call Ust Monday. We hear it whispered around that be would net decline a nomination fer the office of Sonrotary of State on the Dem ocratic ticket. Rumor has it that Mrs. A. W. Star cis of Farest creek this week took strychnine ith suicidal iutent but made the dese so Urge that she failed in her object. Continued sickness is said to be the cause. Marshal Curtis contemplates making a visit to the Eastern S ales socn arid will ask the Board of Trustees to ap point a Deputy during his absence at their next regular meeting. Tli Jacksonville Dramatic Associa tion is rehearsing regularly far its en tertainments on the 3rd and 10th ef April, on which dates some, standard plujs will be presented. No doubt they will be first-elass. A fir broke oat in Chinatown this morning in a houja oscupicd by Lim Wang the washerman and owned by Muller & Soloman. The fire depart ment was on hand an time and the damage proved very alight. We acknowledge receipt of compli mentary tickets for the tntertsiument at Medford last Wednesday night. We could not attend tn person but those who were present bay it was a success both financially and otherwise. The Catholic "Sentinel" says: Rev. Fnther F. X. Blanchet, of Jackson ville, is contemplating tha erection of a small church at Grant's Pats, the di mensions of the some to be 24x40 feet, with two vestry rooms, front porch and bell tower. Wui. V. Jones our popular Foots Creek merchant was in town yester day and made as a pleasant call. On Thursday evening Mrs. Amanda McD&iel took the northbound train at Medfcrd. Whether or not she has returned t? this county we have not heard, tier departure on tne events'; before tha execution ef ONeil has caused much comment. Mrs. Prim leaves for Portland next weak where she will select a large stock of millinery and fancy goods fcr the Spring and Summer trade. She will be accompanied by her daughter, Miss Ida, who will travel awhile for the benefit of her health. Brother McGinnis a! the Medford "Monitor" was present at tha neck-tie party on Friday ef last week. He has just returned from a visit East but while he acknowledged that there are sore peeple in that section he is wil wing to remain hero far reasons too numerous to mention. Mrs. I. G. Moon, af this place, says the "Tidings" disd on Wednesday af ternoon from the effects of puerperal fever, leaving a HttU babe only 11 days old. The body will bo taken to Yamhill county by the bereaved hus band, for burial near relatives and friends "goae before." Fred Grob has quit the saloon busi ness here. Ho sold an interest in his quartz mine this week to L. D. Brown & Co. and will now devote his time to wards developing the same. A 100 foot tunnel will be run on this claim at once. A chronic alarmast circulated the report this week that the well known firm of Angle & Plymale of Medford had failed; the report proves to be en tirely without fonndatien and the firm will shortly transfer their large stock of merchandise to their new brick store which is nearing completion. A circular has been issued by the Saperint-ndnt of tha Southern divis ion ef the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada ordering that hereafter all Chinese passed over the road will be passed through in bond, and that con ductors will be held responsible to see that none of the Mongolians are al lowed to stop in Canada. The Women's Presbyterian Home Missionary ecciety will meet in the hasement of the Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon, March 25th, at two o'clock- The stmi-annual elec tion of officers will take place, and a full attendance of nembersisrequeted. The saloon keeper, after con sultipg his partner, concluded to send the woman a battle ef their fine peach braudy. Convictbd We learn from censta ble Wheeler, that the Indian Isaac, accused of the murder of John Sher man last Juue, in Modoc' county, on t' e road frctn this county, war f jund guilt) of niurdtr in first degree with out any reccommendation from jury of life sentence, which requires the Judge to ia a sentence of death. The guilty assasin certainly deserves the extreme penalty af the, law. The other Indian, Appelgate Jack, was discharged by in nuficiency of evidence against him, yet it seems curious that Ap.-j1gate Jack should escape any penalty, unless he was not the Ind'aa in company with Isaac at time of murder.
