Tte- ' HOI SEBfllEL JACKSONVIL.L.F. I dATDKDAY, Decembeb -5, 1885. The Vice-Presidency. WieniKGTOX, Dec 2. Tho sensa tion of tbe-flay 18 furnished by a story regarding the presidency pro tem cf tbe senate. It is said that tbe repub lioan senators, or at least a number of tbeir leader, have rwed at ike -con elusion that for prudential, as well as ptlitical reasons, it would be wiser ts elect a democrat than to bestow the nsr nponens of their own numbor lis idea is inspired by a number lacers of tbe Grand Army of"ttbe He lblio of the District'of Columbia, and is been put in be forat of a circular Idreseed jtoj republican senators. It lys tbe vacant chair in tho senate hould be filled by one in accord, polit ically, with Cleveland and asks repub lican senat-erp, in order to allaj ex citement and apprehension of danger to give the office to 'democrat. It is eaid that tbe originators of this circular called upon Gen. Logan and Tiad a long intirviev upon the topic. Gen. Logan is understood to have been Tery favorably impressed with the logic embodied in tbe address, and in Qect qafite greed therewith. He said, amone other things, shat Senator Harris or Senator Cockrell would make a goad presiding officer, and under the present condition! of affairs it might be wel' to elect one of thece gentlemen. The address' will probably be made public, eitber on Thursday or! Friday. One of the main points urged in it is that if a republican should be presid ing officer of tho senate and any fanat ic er any lunatic should make an J effort to harm the presibnnt, the re publican party would inevitably have to bear the odium, and that the ii tsrtsts ef the'eonntry and tbe oUimate good of the republican party unito in demanding the sacrifice of political feeling'on the part of republican sen ators. The "Oregonian" of December 3rd, feforring to the appointment of It. M. Dement as Police Judge of Portland said: "This is the first indication that everything in politics and public affairs is to be run under tbe Mitchell -dictation. We shall see where this will end. Kert June may afford a pointer in that way." It is plain to be iseon from the above extract that iScott having failed to defeat the elec tion ef Senator Mitchell will now try Ye et even by defeating the Jtepubli cist party next June. In view of this threat irom the great mugwump of Orrgon, is it not tbe duty of every true Republican in the State to buckle n his armor and go in to win, and thereby teach the boasting autocrat that his efforts in that direction' will be as faille as they were against Sena tor Mitchell. The senatorial election kan demonstrated that the Republican la this State cannot be intimidated by any threat from that source. There fere let him sail in and give us a peinter. New York, Nov.. 30. It is stated on good authority that the Rale- of the unfinished Orrgon k Ca'ifornia rail rod' to the Central Pacific bas not been completed. The negotiations bad reached arrangements to issue $10,000, 000 of Central Pacific bonds, bearing 3 per cent, interest for three years, and 5 per cent, thereafter, with which to take up all the Oregon k California bends, and leave the surplus to com plite the road to a connection with the Central Pacific to build from Cor vallis to a junction with the Oregon Ewtf Side line, and relay the-Orem & California with steel rails. New London lawyers have raised a questii n; first, whether the Central Pacific, un der its charter, can become owner of the Oregon fc California roail; and sec ondly, if the United States Govern ment's lein on the main line of the Central Pacific would not attach to and cover the Oregon & California if it was bought by the Central Pacific It is- not generally known- that fish are among the longest-lived animals. Prof. Baird, best of authority in fidi matters, says carp hare been known te live two hundred years, and a pike - ia. Russia fully doubled that length of time. Goldfish in aquaria hare lived fifty years, in Waahinghton, as the record fhows, but no ons knows how much longer. Sacred fish in China ' hare reached four hundred years or more. Papers have already been receirtd by the Clerk of the House of Repre sentatives at Washington giving notice of contests for four seats in the next Congress, as follows: Campbell against "Weaver, for the Fifth Iowa District; Kine against Steele, for the Eleventh Indiana; Page against Pierce, far the Second Rhode Island, and Purr against Romei, the Tenth Ohio. I Hot hd Halo wMno e Royal Baking T?o wder possesses a peculiar nrerU thai is wot possessed by any other leavening agent. It provides: bread, biscuit, cake, muffins, or rolls which may be eaten : when hoi without inconvenience by persons of the most deli cate digestive organs. "With most persons it is necessary that bread raised with yeast should lose its freshness or become stale before it can be eaten with safety. The same distressing results follow from eating biscuit, cake, pastry, etc, raised by the cheap, inferior baking powders that contain lime, alum, or other adulterants. The hot roll and muffin, and the delicious hot griddle cakes, raised by Royal Baking Powder, are as wholesome and digestible as warm soup, meat, or any other food. Another greatly superior quality possessed by the Royal Baking Powder is that by which he preservation of 1m portant elements of the flour is .effected in raising the bread by mechanical operation of the gas without fermentation. Yeast, and all baking powders that produce the leavening gas by' fermentation, as is well known, destroy a portion of the nutritive elements of the flour, and particularly those which are the most healthful and the greatest aids to a perfect assimilation of the food. The Royal Baking Powder, while perfectly leavening, retains without change or impair ment all those elements which were intended by nature, when combined in our bread, to make it literally the " staff of life." No leavening agent or baking powder, except the Royal Baking Powder possesses these great qualifications. Wagner Creeh Items. A squint at Wagner creek has lately been had fay a man oriiborae back. To those who never studied geec raphy or hare never "been there," and those who live away off, for in stance those who live away out at Eagle Point, we say to thera that Wagner creek ia the garden spot of our valley. The people are happy, and, as a rule, marry young. The most glaring exception of single cussednets is a tchool master living some distance from the head of the creek. The land being splendid, from 60 to 100 dollars per aero ii being paid for it. Mr. Sherman is now putting im provements on his two acres, which are a little up the creek from the town and for which he paid 100 dollars per acre. A little farther on, and we find that Hendriek Goddard lately built a dwelling house, and returned his thanks therefar to Him on Thanks giving night by a dedication dance. Mr. Dean and Miss Walters are doing well with the Wagner Creek school, and intend, daring the holi days., to have a schtl exhibition. Preparations are being made to have a dramatic entertainment. There is also a literary society, and this Sat urday evening there is I believe a debate about women and voting. (I think I will take my wife np there.) The place has a brass band, that is able, though recently gotten up, to already play several tunes. Mr. William Breeze ia leader of the band. Wagner creek will soon be a thickly settled part of our valley. The land being good, many tt. ill make them selves beautiful home?. It is a pleasant neighborhosd to live in, and the peo ple there we with well. Talent, the town ef tbo place, though slowly, it) steadily growing. Every short spell .a new building is added to the place. A Mr. Jackson is now building a dwelling houte there. Many small bui'dings are going on, and the place is making a very respectable appearance. Georgit. SHILOITS CATARRH REMEDY a positive cure for Catarrh, Diphtheria and Canker Mouth.
