Mitch ell have not seen proper to assail th character or Imputation of any of the gentlemen named in connection with the position of United States Senator. Tlipy have no desire to do so, for they recognize in such methods no advan tage to the party or honor to tho State But they will not be bulldozed or intimidated by insinuations or threats. At least they so state most emphati cally. Those who have known him .uost intimately and -longest seem to be his most earnest admirers and ardent adherents. Ther affirm, with little show of contradiction, that he was the most active, the most liberal and tbe most successful Senator Ore gon ever had in Washington; that he did not use bis position to increase his personal wealth that be did not prostitute bis office as Senator frr pur posps of speculation; that be never neglected a duty he owed a constitu ent, regirdless of tbo latter'a politics; that he always bad time, and indicated that it was a pleasute, to ibow atten tion to any of bis constituents whe chanced to visit the National Capital while he was Senator; that he was indefatigable and usually successful in securing for Oregon her full share of national appropriations; in short, that he is a man of the people, works tor the ppople, and is recognized by the people as both a representative and a friend. This being tbe view enter tuined of him by his numerous friends, it is pretty certain that uncalled for and unprovoked slander and abuse will on I) make them stand by him morn courageously and devotedly, while at the same time it will bring down their indignation and wrath upon his defamers, those who associate ith and encourage them, and those vbo expect to derive any personal or puliiical advantage fromthd defama tion. New Yokk, Nov. 10. The Tribunr denies the charge of the Independents that the Ulaine Republicans defeated Davenport. It saym The Blaine men coiiitiiuting a great majority of the Republicans of the S'nto of New York supported Davenj.ort loyally and zeal oualy. They were foiled by the mug wumpB. Every mugwump who re turned drove off three Irishmen, who honestly believed in the Republican doctrine of protective tariff, who had honestly voted for Blaine and who believed (mistakenly of coarse) that there must be some deception about the Republican nomination of Daven port when tbe Post and its free trade gtng supported it. ffynip or Flc Nnturo'a own true Laxative. An Oregon mushroom weighing a pound and a half was shown to a "News" man ypsterday by Dr. Jpssup. It grew in two hours in the Doctor's garden on the corner of Twenty-first and G. streets, The edible portion is twenty-four inches in circumference, wbila the stem was about six inches in circumference. The Doctor gathered several of the same size, which were consumed by himstlf and family. These cryploga mic plants were not only larger, but more delicate in flavor than any the Doctor ever used before. "You stole that article." Portland News', "Yen stole that dispatch." Portland Oregonian. "Yon stole that item." Portland Standard. Th above is a synopsis of a discussion that has been going on for some time among Oregon's metropolis papers. For heaven's sake, cease it? What did you fellows bay your shears and paste pot for, if not to use? If some one bad stolen your shears and paste oyster-can, then yon would have bad something to kick about Pendleton "Tribune." She Works for Her Living. Commend ui to a girl of whom it it sneeringly said, "sbn wors for a liv ing." In her we are always sure to find the elements of a woman a lady; true we are not prepared to see a mincing stepi a haughty lip, a fashion able dres, or to bear a string of non sense about young men and balls, the new novels and the next party; no, no, but we are prepared to bear sound words of good sense, language becom ing a woman, and to witness move ments that 'would -not' 'disgrace an angel. You who are looking for wives and companions, turn from the fashionable, lazy, haughty girls, and select from any of those who work for a living, and never, our word for it, will you repent your choice. You want a sub stantial friend, and not a doll; a help mate, and not a helpeat; a counsellor, and not a simpleton. If you cannot purchase a novel, you may be able to take some valuable paper. If you cannot buy a ticket to a ball, you can visit some afflicted neighbor. B care ful where you look for your wife and when you choose. We know many a foolish man, who, instead of choosing the industrious ana pruderit woman for his wife, took one from the fashiona ble walks of lifp, and is lamenting his folly in duit and ashes. He ran into the fire with his eyes wide open, and who but himse'f is to blame!" The "Oregoninn" has fired its broad tide of big guns, and John H. Mitchell still lies. Ah soon as tbs smoke cleared away, and the elements re sumed their peaceful tine, the awaiting and expectant thousands found that tbe assailant's game bad escaped, only a little powder being burned, while the "Oregonian" was barely ablo to recover from the concussion, and finally settled down to the level of the "Poliee Gazette" or any other scandal sheet. Ex Senator Mitchell denies that he ever wrote the letters attributed to him by the "Oregonian," and peop'e generally are surprised to find that tbe "Oregonian's" threatened thunder bolt has turned out to be only a con tinuance of that persecution of the Ex-Senator, which is characteristic of tbe man whom Mitchtll caused to be fired from the Portland Custom House for treason to the Republican party in Oregon. "Mprcury." Henry Poor, ot Southern Oregon, was examined before the TJnijfd States Commissioner one day lastjpek on a charge of forcibly driving pros pective settlers off the public domain. Poor, who by the way is not as poor as the name would suggpst, held the land'in question under a title from the State, which land was acquired under tbe swamp land act The com plainant was of the opinion that Poor's title was invalid, and accordingly pro ceeded to locate a homstead claim right on top of Poor's ditches, fences and other improvements a fact that resulted in the introduction of an ugly looking shotgun into the case. After hearing all the testimony in the case, Commissioner Deady released the de fendant, and allowed the matter to go before the proper authorities at Wash ington for a final hearing. Irish wit never found happier ex pression than in the followingwhich we have just received from the Sou dan by private wire: An Irish sold ier was bringing in an Arab prisoner, when the latter aid: "You blow Arab man's bead off, I RUppo'el'' "Faix," replied the soldier as he wiped the perspiration off bis brow, "I'd rather blow the head off a pet of porter this minute than the heads of half a dozen of the likes of ye." A young man in Colusa county, California, shot himself about a year ago because a young woman refused to marry him. Tbe girl said he was a fool, but the boy recovered. The other day the girl committed suicide Tnpcauae the bey refnsed to have her. The world changes and so do boys and girls. Philosophical. The editor of the "facoma "Daily News" took his arrest and incarnation cooly and philosophically. He ex presses bis contempt for the Unheal Statej District Attorney and sundry and divers others as follow:. "The Daily News reiterates this and more. It declares that there should be no plsee found in GodR country for such a devil's brood as the Chinese, the lying "Oregonian" and the offi cieua, over zealous United State Dij trict'AttorneyXVhitPand'th'erene., gades, codfish, aris(ocrats,'(iicIr spittles and toadies who cluster with them; "In conspqunce of the elevation of m-h small creatures to office, and their endeavors to crath tihini down our throats, and in pursuance to the' terms of law, which is still supreme and should rule, even though mal-ad-ministered by the Whiles and invoked by the "patricians," the Daily "Nws" will, until further advices, be edited from cll No. 7, Fort Vancouver, un less the address be changed to McNeil's island, of which .du notice will be t,iven. "Friends having the ctieerfill old anthem: 'In the prison cell I sit,' etc The Miiitidi Considerable ink is being devoted to" the amendment of the Sta'e militia; law. What does Oregon want with a State militia law, anyhow? Wliy should the lax-payers of Orogon pay for trapping's and gilt edged swords for dude militia officers to prance around in like monkeys in yellow jack ets'! If there was any use in the Sta'8 providing targets and powder, guns and uniform for the defense of the country, no ono would object. Oregon has no need of a militia. Let her Legislators j?ite" the ptfople justice, and there will never be need of them. If men at their own expense desire to parade aroundtan red and go'd, let them parade to their heart's content If they want to burn pow der let them buy it. Taxes nro high enough now without increasing them to support a standing army. The militia laws heed amending badly. They need amending so that no county would be taxed to furnish cigars and a beer hall at the tune of S600 per year for a gang of men that choose to call themselves a military company. The way to amend them in to wipe them off the statute books. "Vidette." No Timk For Discussion. A great many pesple are interested just now ir! ascertaining bow tho President is goinjt to divide the numerous offices at his disposal; Hopes are entertained by many that he will make a clean sweep, while others) who do not expect any office, are of the opinion that the civil service reform rules should be observ ed. A similar difference ef opinion occurred between two darkeys who were raising poultry by hand. "Sambo, ain't hit agin de law ter take dese heah chickens?" asked one! of the reformers. ' "Dat ar am a great meral question which we haint't got no time for dis cusshan' down anudder pullet "Tex as Sifting." What strange creatures we are, to be sure! A sailor soon forgets the terrors of the sea, and ships again era he has been ashore a month; the con vict is alaiost certain to return to the prison from which he was released it short time tack, and the widow will marry a second time if she gets a chance and she usually gets thechanoo "Boston Transcript." It was definitely learned Friday that General McClellan came vrry near being a member of President Cleveland's Cabinet; that be was ten dered the Russian Mission and de clined it because of business engage-" ments, and that within twenty-four hours prior to his death the President had concluded to offer him an appoint ment as member of tbe Civil Service Commiision. The Englishman with his Chinese' wife and six children, dinied admit tance at San Francisco, arrived as Victoria, B. C, and was admitted ort the payment of 50 head tax on his wife and each child. Dakota men profess to know that it is tbe intention of the President l o recommend admission of Dakota as State, but that he is inclined to think that the Territory is large enough for two States. o-a.
