The tide of immigralion noir setting toward Oregon is only the vanguard of a great multitude a little way be hind. From eery quarter of the union comei the intelligence that people are getting ready to immigrate to tje west. The drouth in Califor nia, this year, will send thousands of new comers to ur and to Washington territory. Immigration coming to thia c5asUaniOverlthe2e?ntratroutesjJlhit alliOverltheJcentralaroutesglhij ,'w7lrgivCauromiirnIiTrgo by season unles3 they have friends or relatives to cause them to tarry. The compla tion of the Northern Pacific and thn Oregon Short line has lent such addi tional facilities to travel and so cheap eneJ rate, that many heretofore un able to come are notv coming or con template coming in the near future. Ono great drawback to a heavy im migration ia the difficulty of disposing of property in the east and middle western states. Prcpsrty has greatly depreciated there. If people could sell out in these localities without too much sacrifice, there would ba a regu lar stampede for the golden shores of the far west. As it is they are com ing as fast as they can get away. The terrible storms experienced in many of the western and southwestern stales preclude the possibility of their ever becoming desirable places for residence. Cities of refugp, a hole dug in the ground, into which families can tlee in times of dangerous storms, is the local accompaniment of thousands of dweMings in some of the estcrn states. Who would like to live in a country where the hard earnings of a life-time are liable to be swept awa7 in a mo ment of time, dashed to pieces and de stroyed? Where life is not safe fur one moment! Rather live in the Wil lamette valley, the El"n of the far west, where the heaviest winds do comparatively no dam act and cyclomti and tl e battling of the elements' ate unknown. If we were gifted ttith the spirit of phrophecy we would prophesy a brill iant future for Oregon. That it will in a few ear, have a large popula tion ot worthy and happy cilzeus. That thp Willamette valley will onu dav be to Oregon what the Mohawt valley is to New York a rieh beehive of hu man industry. A beautiful garden, exhalted to the highest standard of cultured exc.Iencp, and blcoming in vernal beauty, and unexcelled produc lions. Albany "Bulletin." Oregon at New Orleans. The Rural New Yorker, ono of the most widely cir-ulating agricultural papers In the United States, sent a special reporter to New Orleans, whosp reports aro truthful and consertatite in the extreme. The space given to Oregon in its regular mention of States is f-qual to that of Ohio and Missouri combined, and is greater than that of New York or Pennsjlvania. The foi. owing is an extract: "The produc lions and industries of Uregon are most happily ihown, and many a visi tor has been grandly surprised by the wonderful exhibit of this great Pacific State, especially in her sot products Ilorcarerul display shows high 'rankjj g'h'eat.Cjwithout irrigationg.yielaVtSQ, bushel per, acre, l fie straw is o leet hi2h7 -wsv: rfb" -h heads six isches -.long. , Oats grow.over 7fert, straw ij'jnch around at 'base, heads 16 inche3 long, yield 1C6 bushels per acre. Sixty three grasses are shown Timothy, 7 feet; Kentuckey blue, 5 ft. 4; Red Top, 6 ft. 2. Oregon takes second place to no other rpgion on the iracihe slope for fruit of any kind, and her present winnings in Horticultural Hall bear cut that claim. The vegetables shown are of immense proportions. A. ruta baga' weighs 68 pounds; a turnip 39i a head of cabbage 41; a potato 8J; on ions measure 161 inche; radishes 131 long10 inches around; carrots 32 long 17 around, and so on. There are ex cellent wool fleeces, and manufactured woolens. The great salmon industry is well displayed in can, and alive in tanks. The mineral collection includes many fine specimens of all loading ore; and the entire State exhibit is one of special merit." The territorial Government of Da kota has offered a reward of $5,0&0 for the dicoery and development f a mine of anthracitp coal in tb Terri tory, and prospectors are busy. The Offices. The Democrats are terribly cut up by the appointment of Hobson to be collector of tba port at Astoria, and "Boss" Schenck to be appraiser at Portland. Hobson was-reconimnnded by the Cleveland club of Astoria, be cause he is wealthy and paid their ex penses, but h is said by those who know to have no standing in the party outside of the saloons, was not entitled Ito.the'offica onitheeroaBdoXpartv servicisnot'weUaaliGedlowforBrifc the duties, and does not need the sal ary, which he is expeeted to donate bodily to tho campaign furd, to be used in purifying politics and carrying forward the glornus work of reform so happily begun by turning out a good and a faithful officer to put Hobson in. A gsntleman who has been acquainted with Schenck 19 years says he never heard him lav a word in favor ot the Democratic party. He always took the boss to ba a Republican. Schenck U also rich, owns a saloon, spends coma of his bummers at the Foley Springs in this county, and ethers at Coney Island, near New York Citj ; is a good fellow, but had not the slightest claim to tho office en pnrtj ground; has to need of the salary, which would be a bonanza to many a faithful Democrat, and will probably dump it into the campaign fund. Schenck never did anything for the party, but he gets a fat office. Our friend Noltner has been digging awny for the party like a nio'e nndpr a door yird for twsnly five years, but he ii left out in the cold, and scores of others all over the State are in the same fix. The pangs of disappoint ment experienced by the Republicans at the treatment which they recived from Hayes, after their extraordinary labors to get him into the ' Wbttsr House, were sensations of positive de light, Ti heriyeotnpare"d' with tbfeHi?gust and remorse with which lh Demoerat ic workers and .wheel horses look;upoa such appointments as those referred to above. No doubt a large majority of them are norry that Blaine was not elected, and xouhl vote for him if they had it to do over again. The Re publicans bad a slight taste of it ouder Haves, and know bow to sympathize with the Democrats in thpir unhappy condition. It is one of the worst cases of misplaced couSdence on racord. The leading citizvns and business men of Jackson county ought at ncn to organize an immigration board, and hivo full statistical information on hand, so that persons coming here could apply a once to tho Board and get all needed information, In refer- erence to our county. By this mans many could be detained, but as it is, they apply to erery one, and no one seems to be well informed on the sub ject, that would interest our eastern friends when they arriie. Other1 counties aro wide awake to these in terests, and should no longer be neg lected by us. The greatest irnmigraj tion that eer came to Oregon is now upon us, and aro uoitly of the better class, just such as we need to build up a county.
