Mexican Millionaire. Tktr rt a great many millionaires in America. They arc found North, South, East and West- At a rule the Mere millions they possess, the mere the want and the meaner the be eeme. The habits engenltrtd in ac cumulating became is dominant that the cannot be generous. There are occasional exceptions to the rale, lut the are so scarce as not to attract ninth attention. Sack an exception, howsYor, is recently recorded of a old gentleman in llexice. Ha is repre seated to be werth man million', and has made the diicerer that while bearded wealth can be of no raise to kin, distributed wealth mar be of lBkstinaSle rains to earth's deferring poor. This eld gentleman is not only blessed with wealth, but has been frowned with long life and good health (Dd permitted to celebrate his golden redding. On this occasion he gave an itaasnse .tanqaet to all his friends, and distribated $500,000 among the poor Mple in the lecait-eaten dis tricts, while he contributed 50,000 to the repnblic te help pa eft Us debts. This old gentleman set an fiamp'e which ceald be profitably followed by a goed man of oar bloated montpo lists. A man pststued ot 100,000, 000 is really no better off than if he only owned $5,000,000. His power of doing goed is inestimable-,, but it is generally a latent power that is seldom exercised. If some of those surp'ua millions were only distributed among the deserring poor, especially in a sea son like this, the monopolist would feel mora real happiness than he could enjoy in any other way, and would write his name ertrlastingly in golden letters on the hearts of the people. The most singular part of the stery is, that the name of the good Mexican is withheld from publication Some ma think 'this throws boubt upon its accuracy, but for the credit of peer human nature let us bsliere it true theach it may be false. The Ceos Bay "News"" says it has reliable information to the effest that Coel bay will be omitted in the ap propriation bill for the improvement ef rirers and harbors, and says the faalt in curs. Oar neighbor tickles ourranity'tso mack.' m attributing to as such a powerful influence. Bat re da net beliere tkat he has any such in formation. Ke desires to impreis people with the belief that there ill be a appropriation made for this plaee in order, perhaps, te giro Sena tor Slater credit for it after it ike-been made. He says Slater secured the last apprepriatiea. Well, if ke did, prtbably he can secure tke next. There is nobody koldiag kirn that we are aware of, and we are poiitire tkat we are not; so let Slater sail in. So far as any aetaal improremoat- to tke entrance to the karbor is concerned, under the past and present manage ment of the appropriations, it will make bat slight difference te the pres tat generation if another apprepria tiea is nerer made. Some of tke keodlumi and sqaaw-men at Rocky Foiat aad Eoatk sloagk weald be com pelled to rustle for tkeir whisky money in seme quarter otker thanaroand tke gerernvent works. These men might Ber. But, owing te tho way in ick things hare beea conducted at Rocky Point, there is no improvement to safer. In the language of a young fellow who worked down there last fall, "it will take a thousand years to accomplish anything as the work is new beiag carried on." Coast Mail. Gerernor Cobara, whose deaths was recently recorded in Maine, revives a little history. Miss Kellegg, of fame as a singer, met him at tho State Col lege aad, mistaking kira for the jani -1 tor or man of work of tome sort at jtke place, engaged him te fetch drink ing water from a distant spring for ..use. Her risit at the college lasted for sereral dan of the com mencement week. Jast before leaving ake took outker purse and offered some coin to Mr. Cobura, wko smilingly shook his head. Miss Kellegg's chagrin was dsep whsn later, ske WraiJ tltr th niB who had been Erring her was none other than the good satured Goraraer Ceburn, the riehest man ef the northeastern cor ner of tke country. ThereVae nse- talking I'm goiag to get married," said a bachelor to a married acqaaiatanee tke ether day, while busily engaged in sewing. "Here I kaTo worked jast twenty aniautes by the watch trying to get this needle threaded, and then, just as I succeeded, I pulled tho thread eat. 1 Finally I get it threaded, and new, after sewing on this button fast aad Ireng, I find Tre ot it ea the wroag it, aad hare my work all to do ever lam." The Canadian Pacific promises to In its first train through from Quebec ?ert Moedy on August 22, aad will ke tke trip ia 105 kean. Money and, Trade. There are8Cattering signs of im prorement in business in the great meney centers ia tke country. For the past two weeks there has been con siderable mere activity in the stock markets. As a consequence prics advanced with sufficient strength to indicate most unmistakably increased confidence en tke pait ef operators. Aa might reasenally be expected, here and there unfavorable symptoms have been manifested, bat net snfficisntly to weaken confidence. Tke men who hare beea holding control of 'ho mar kets indicate by their firm grasp that they are certain that a turn in the tide has taken place at last. Greater activity has not been displayed on Wall street fer tks past year than has been witnessed during the past two weeks. The result is, capitalists are beginning to pick up courage and withdraw their deposits from the banks for the purpose ef investment. If this feeTTng is maintained 4for any length of time the enormous reserve held by the New Yerk banks will soon be reduced to a healthy eendition, and business will resume its normal state. Another encouraging feature is the gradual resumption of business by tho large Jmanfaeturiag establishments in the Eastern States. It is true this is slow, l.ut it is steady. Every day the record is in favor of resumption, while a few months ago it was ene contiual cry of running on short time or shutt ine down altogether. Thousands of men were out of employment a few weeks ago are now at work, and the grcat 8rmT f operatives is being strengthened by daily accessions. This injtself is calculated to make despon dency give place to hopefulness. Still another item ef which there is cause of eengratulatisn in businets circles, is tho gradual decrease of fail ares throughout the country. Week before last 346 were reported; last week only 270, a decrease of 20 per cent. This indicates ene ef two things: either that the weak houses of tke country have been pretty well weeded oat, or that those which are embar- rased have been able to obtain relief in tho shape ef extensions or money accommodations. Ia either ease the result shews an improvement in finan cial matters. Portland has not. perhaps, given the same evidence of business- recu peration reported in the great centers. It takes seme time for the improved circulation at the heart to reaeh the extremities. Bat if tho reported changed condition of things in the East is not deceptive, the tido will flow across the country aad carry with it thousands ef industrious and hopeful immigrants to awell the population ef the Northwest. When the tide does come in it will float many a commer cial venture now stranded on the beack. Dr. W. H. HawkiVs, ef College Hill had occasion to go into his servants' quarters the ether evening and found tke place full of smoke. There was a fire in the fireplace, but the smoke re fused te aseend the chimney as usual. Thinking tkat there might be an ob struction of seme kind, ho extinguish ed the fire, and the next'day examin ed the chmney. To his surprise h found the bdy ef a man lodged there, and soma of the wall had to be torn down before it could be removed. It was then discovered that the body w.as that ef a servaat who had been dis covered the day before. He had evi deatly returned during the evening in hope of finding lodging, and as the door was locked he made an effort to go down the chimney head first. Being unablo to extricato himself he smother ed to death. One of tke most singular features in t'le scenery of tks territory ef Idako is tke. occurrence ef dark, rocky chasms, into which creeks and large streams suddenly disappear and are never more teen The fissures- are old lara channels, produced- by the outside ef the mass coaling and forming a tube, which, when the fiery stream was ex hausted, has been left empty, while the reef ef the lava duct, having at some point fallen in, presents there the opeaiag into which the river plunges and is lost. At one place along the Snake one ef these rivers appears gushing from a cleft high up in basaltic walls, where it leaps a cataract into tke torrent below. When this stream has its origin, or at what point it is swallowed up, is absolutely unknown, although it is believed that its sources are a long way np ia the North countries. The trades' unions of New Yerk aad other cities are called upon te take action against a certain brewer, "who despises tho vital interests of the working classes, who have made him a millionaire," aad te abstain from drinking his beer. It would be a more practical coarse for the workingmen to abstain on their ewa account. In regard to the decay ofjthe Haw. aiianF, a writer in the Popular Scirnco Monthly says: With en abundance ef schools an churches, there are every year fewerj scholsrs andj worshiper; with an admirable system of govern ment, there are constant! becoming fewer to govern. And even the seem ing arrest shown by the last census in ths process of decay in the native race is not real; for during the last six years the Hawaiian popeulatian decreased over 4000, the total gain being caused by an increase of feeigners to the ei- .tent of over 5000. The government, in a frantic effort to save itself from extinction, is importing immigrants; daring tha two yean ending in 188C it art rod need ever 900 Portuguese from the Madeira islands, and more than 1100 Polynesians 'from the Gil hurt islands. Besides these, many Chinese have come. We are tuld,' mereover, that the physical type of the natives has deteriorated; that the great stature and forms noted by the early risitors to the islands have pars ed away. The butorv of the Hsw aiians for the last 60 yearn might be almost condensed into three words Cnristianizatian, civilization, extermi nation. On last Sunday Miss Mary Thomas, of Oregon City, who has been at work in Gov. Moody's family in Salem, took carbolic acid with it is supposed sui eidal attempt. The result is thus stated in Monday's papers: Mary Thomas, who took caborlic acid last nightji better and is thought out of danger, unless inflamation sets in. She has been removed from Gor. Moody's today to G. Stoltz,' in care of Dr. Bisdon. Her sister is with her Other friends havo arrived. When she first came to, it is reported she wanted to die, that her heart was bro ken. She qot a letter a day or two ago and brooded over it. It is said she was engaged to a Portland man, and was disappointed in love. She now states it was taken as a medicine for her stomach by mistake. It was mixed with glycerine, else it would have been sure death. Patis Gibson, who has recently ar rived from his stack ranch in Montana, reports tke winter a trying ene on thv ranges, but the herds are pullirg through in good shape, with the ex ception of the new importations which have suffered considerably. The ag gregate loss to the owners, however, will be unexpectedly small, and as the worst of the season is over and the wbather moderating, Mr. Gibson i confident that the Montana eattle gen erally will be in fair condition when comes to their relief. Things were made rather lively in the San Francisco post office a week or so ago by the escape of a number of bees from a package which was re- 'csived in the mail. New York, Feb. 13.
