The Dtraocratt, who are hopelessly in the minority, continue to honor premiatat members ef their party by tiring toait new man the party vote each succeeding dy, while theRepub licaa vote it te hopelessly scattered, that no preference has been indicated to far. The long delay in so impor tant eleetien is growiag monotonous te the people of this state as them is not a ttction of it but is interested in other legislation, and one half of the session has already beta consumed withoat anything haring been accomplished of very great importance te the state. The legislator is largely Republican' and te that, party belongs the election of Soriator,buttht sentiment against the election of any one in any way identi fied with corperatient or monopolies has become so stronc, that the man who it elactid by the present legisla ture will hare to be one who has no ether motive ia aspiring to the posi tion than an honest desire to servo the State faithfully, in return for the honor they confer on him. He must be determined, in common with the people he represents, to gua'd every interest of this state against the insiduoas encroachments' of corporate wealth that is sieking ts swallow up our public domain, and by its grasping greeJ to drive back the tide of emigra tion that it being attracted hitherto by the undeveloped resourcei of our' magnificent slate. In our opinion, aud we belitve the popular vet of the state fwould suatain us in it, Hen. J. H. Mitchell, who so faithfully repre sented us for one term ia the United Btateg Senate, is the man that every interest of this state demands for the position, we de not claim tor him the modern reqnitition cf Senators, the questionable one of speedily gotten wealth, for he is known to the people of this state as comparatively a pter nan, a man who did not spend tht iz years of his representation, in the doubtful service of corporations, and theijntgation of personal wealth, but vSItkhe entire term ef his office to the advancement of the interests ef erery portion of the state, and we point with pride'tohis record, to btarus eut in the assertion. We hope Demo crats will eblittrale party lines and confer upon themselves the lasting gratitude of the people by uniting with Republicans in the election of J. II. Mitchell as our next senator. The vote on Friday steed as follows: Jadgo Strahan, 36, Hirsch, 26, Hare, 12, Failing, 5, "Williams, 4, Kelsay 2, Johnson, 1, George, 1. Absent, Car eon. A, break is expected to-day. Among the dark horses mentioned, and it now lookt as if a horse ef that color stands the bett chance, are J. H. Mitchell, E. B. Watsen, C. C. Beek wan and Z. F. iloody. We're a pull ing for the black bass. The reports from the legislature for the week would indicate a considerable amount efreatine and committee work, but no special act of importance has bhea-'eompleted. The bill for the regilatiou of freights and fares will probably be amended in several re spects before it patset, if indeed it pasmr in any form. The committee on public buildings has befere it a bill appropriating 100,000 for completing the State House, and there will prob ably be an amount sufficient for tke purpose appropriated The Senatorial questionis as unde cided as ever, the Democrats cast ing complimentary votes for each of tWir favorite statesman in regular order, while the Republicans divide thsir votes ameng half a dozen favor ites. Hirsch of Portland leads, with 23 votes yesterday just half enough to elect. No one can give any satis factory guess at the final result' o Geverner Squire, of Washingten Territory, in urging the claim of that territory te the right ef admissien as a state, says the present papulation it 147,000, aad the volume of immigra tion promises to continue undiminish ed. He says that this territory is the nly political division on the continn ons seaboard of the United States which remains in & territorial condi tion. Its foreign commerce requires ampler conditions of government. The presence of an English colony, growing rapidly prosperous, alse af fords anothtr reason for admission. Tke settlement of riparian rights on Paget sound would be greatlv facili tated under a state administration of the territory'! affairs. Th Ashland fTeolon Mills resumed work again this week after a short sm'pensiea. O'Donovan Rossa Shot- O'Donovan Rotst, the noted dyna miter, was shot on the second inst by an English woman in New York City. Five shuts were fired bat anly one took effect, that lodging in the back. The object of the thooting is thought to be in revenge for the London ex plosion. Jeremiah O'Donovan has bttn a contpicueus figure in Irish na tionalja&ira fer years. He tacked en the word "Roria," which ia Gaslic means "red," after reaching this conn try. After having been discharged from aa English prison he came to this country, with Thomas Francis Bark, Dr. Dennis, Dowling Mulcshy and and John Devoy, about 1869. Ho was engaged in a ntusbtr of enter prises in New Yerk, having been- ticket agent fer the Trancontinental Co. of steamers and hotel keeper. He ran for State Senator in the fourth Senatorial district, against "William 1L Twceo, and was badly defeated. He opened a hotel at the corner of Chatham square and Mott street, which for while did a good business, being a great resort for Irish national itts; custom fell off, after a time, and Rossa was compelled to shut up the place. He subsequently founded the "United Irishman," a radical dyna mite organ, of which sheet he is the purported editor. O'Donovan is 53 yearn old, but is remarkably well pre nerved for hit years. He has a wife and five children, and lived with his family at 23 Duryea street, Brooklyn. President Taylor's Sunday Sernion- Salt lake, Feb. 2. President John Taylor spoke in the tabernacle yester day. He referred to his recent trip and said the saints were being perse cuted in Arizona, and "sent to the American Siberia for living their re ligion. He speke of the federal offi cers here as sneaks and tramps, in truding with processes from the courts into the homes of the people. This was hard to bear, and forbearance might cease to be a virtue. Yet he advised his hearers to stand' it a little longer, did net want blood to flow jnst yet. There would be a change before long. Ho wouldn't give up the law of God, so help him God, and the congregation shouted amen. Fersecn tions weremaking most saints think of goinglp a foreign country to pre serve religious liberty. There might be another pilgrim's day. He said the saints were illegally punished at home and killed in tha southern states. No one was punished for murdering missionaries. He intimated that all must bo silent on what they knew, and thus thwart the wicked men who were persecuting the people. . D. D.,D.
