One's mission is to de ceive, befuddle, distort, exaggerate' or aapprets; when it happens to be right it is so accidentally or fer its own eon venience. Sulletin, theqaes tioa of wagrs is one which is apparent ly never settled. Manufacturers watch each ether with unremitting vigilance, acd when one is discovered to hare fenad that certain lat or can I e ebtained fer a lower price than ia generally given, the others soon adopt tbatprice asthe standard. The competi tion is sharp, and must be sharp, wheie a difference of a few hundredths of a cent per yard in cost determines whether it is possible to tt goods at a profit or a loss. Heretofore the rata of wages has been determined princi pally by the cost iu this ceuntrj of im ported goods whieh come into competi tien with goods of American manufac turers, and secondarily by the compe tition between manufacturers thsm selves. The influence of protection en the rate of wages has been, te a con siderable extent, obscured by su.h qu cations of cost-and competition, and the reason for the difference betwetn wages in America and wages in Eng land and othHrcompeting countries has been atcsrtaiaed only after a consider ation of a leng array ef facts whieh can be made to enlighten or mystify, according te .ability or honesty ef the manipulators. It has remained fer the potters of New Jersey to put the relation ef wages t protection in clear a light that there can be no further obscurity for anyone whe wi'l look with his eyes open. The hard times have caused the manufacturers of petterj in Tren ton to git e notice ef a redaction of wages, as has been done in other citin. As was natural, werknen opposed the reduction proposed, and an effort to compromise was made. The manu facturers agreed to give the rate ef wages paid to English woikmon of the same class, with the addition of 55 per cent., which represents the in created price they are enabled to get fer their goods by reason of the Pro tective Tariff. Without this tariff of 55 percent, it is certain that the put ters would notjbe able te obtain mere paj than de the English workmen. Bat the Trenton potters are not sat isfied with this offer. They want te obtain in addition the benefit of the pretectioa afforded indirectly by freight, insurance, eouel fees, etc. h .visa iae prejieruun ei cost ei ported articles representing these charges to be added to the rate of wages offered. Here, then, is a plain' example ef the benefit derived by American work men by a Protective Tariff. It sbowt haw directly the tariff regulates the standard of wages whether it shall be high er low. The minor variations from thit standard depend mainlj upon the competition among American man ufacturers. The Trenton potters and their wercmen and apparently the first te strip the qsestioa of wages ef that obscuritj with which Fres Trade orators are accustomed to surround it, and te shew that a Protective Tariff may establish a rate of wages which the manufacturers may be forced to great. YThea put ia as clear a light as it has been inTrentnn, the employer ef labor has so chance to evade the quettiea, and will be ferced bj public opinion to grant te his werl men the benefit which the Govern ment itself gives them the right to claim. The best precets of making sweet batterer more properly sweet cream butter, is as follows: Fer this pro duct the cream, whether in creamery er dairy practice, is almost universallj obtained bj the cold process, and the milk should be set as soon after it is drawn as possible, and promptly ceolsd. The ase ef covered' vettvls should be avoided. If the vessels containing the milk are surrounded by cold water er celd air there is no possible advantage in their being covered, while the quality of the butter is impaired by the means. Not enlj is the qualitr of the baiter improved bj exposing the milk and cream te tne action ef free air, erair from which the vapor has been tan. densed bj contact with ice er ice cold water, but the flavor and arena of the butter are improved. No funnel, tube or other attachment to any form of cover yet began to remove aeatlj all the objections te it.
