The Democratic mem bri af that body held a cancut oua night thit weak when tha majority present decided not to ba bound to any particular man en that aide and they are juit at free ai tha other fellows. Senator Miller of Josephine caunty, upen a patitien ef citizens of that county and Grants' Pass, has intra duccd a bill ta establish the boundary line between that caunty and this, the bject af whioh ii to cut off 4 townships from this caunty and annex them to Josephine. An effort has been made at each recurring session of the legis lature sinea Hen. N. Langall was a Kiemberta cutoff the;e townships, and tha preposition has always been met and defeated by our Senator and Rep resentatives, and wa predict and hapa it will ba defeated again. It it ap parent that there ara many impartant influences at wark to accenplish this ebjtit at this session, among hich is a determination an tha part of its prin cipal adrocatas to make Grants Pass tha caunty seat of Josephine county, aad at tha same time too add largely to her pepulatien; but it must be remem bered that what would ba Josephines gain would ba our loss, and wa have neither wealth er population to spare. Senator Miller of Josephine who is said ta ba a Portland capitalist, has large property interests in Ashland aad Grants Pass and ha wis doubtless elected to further this schema. The "Time's" unseemly congratulation last summer aver tha election of Millor is sow fully explained, as Millar defeated a Democrat. Mr. Niekell also owns large interests in the new town of Grants Pats. Sa much for tha editor of tha "Times" simon pure Democracy. It required a threatened heavy with drawal of patronage to induce Mr. Niekell to sign the ramenstrance and his silence on tha measure indicates clearly that he wants to take his cus tomary "sweet and sour pie" positien an this impartant question. It is clearly evident that the mora ta divide tha caunty is bsing made in the inter est of a few sordid individuals for their own perianal gain and wa hepe tha legislature will set emphatically dawn Om them. British Columbia has on its hands a vexatious and alarming Chinese incu bus. It is passing through the same difficulties which far years hava men aced tha prosperity and retarded the grawthef Oregon and tha Pacific cotst. Cheap labor is net tha blessing that msny people suppose it to be. Salaries in Different Coun tries. In Hangar;- each member of tha Imperial legislative body receives for arsry day of the session abont $2.40, betides $400 annually for lodging; in Austria abont $5 a day during the seision. France pays her Senatara and Deputies about $2,250 per annuo:; Holland about $850 per annum and traveling azpenses; Belgium $84 a month during the session; Norway about $3.30 a day and traveling ex ptnses; Portegal, $2.50 per diem. Metubers of the Canadian Farliment receive, for every testion lasting over a month, $1,000 aad 10 ceats mileage; Brazil gives to her Senators $1,800 for tne session, and to the Represen tatives $1,200 and traveling expense; Mexico allows the members of both Houses $2,000 per annum; the Argen tina Republic even goes as high as $3,500; and in the United States both Senators and members of- the Romseof Representatives receive $5,000 an nually, with mileage at 20 cents per mile. Wa hope the people of this county will net fail to note the fact that Mr. rfieltell of the ''Times" has not even so much as intimated that our people ara opposed to cutting off tha four townships frem our western boundary and adding them to Jesephine. In last weeks issua he mentioned tha mat ter three or fonr times without saying a word against it, and this wek ha is still more profuse in his mention ef the matter but net one word against it. Is it possible that his financial in terests at Grant's Pass have closed bis mouth to the public goad It looks as though our contemporary never had an impulse that rcte above his pocket strings.
