board of fire underwriters shows that

Salim (Or.), June 19. The case of
Mrs. David Swarts, accused of com
plicity in the murder of her husband,
went to the jury this evening, and af
ter a few minutes' deliberation they
returned a verdict 'of acquittal.
Tilden's withdrawal as presidential
candidate gives the delegates elocted
to the democratic national convention
in his behalf a splendid opportunity
to sell out at good figures to the man
with the biggest bar'l; and they'll do
it, too.
Soxora (Cal.), June 19. Last night
the body of James Bawden, a man who
had attempted suicide by cutting his
throat and had made his escape from
the County Hospital, was found in a
mining hole where he had evidently
drowned himself.
On last Monday evening, says the
Lak;County Examiner, a water spout
struck the mountain northeast of
town, transforming the numerous hill
side gulches into rivers of respectable
proportion, flooding the level plain be
low to a depth of six or eight inches.
No serious damage was done.
Writing of Heron Siding, on the
Northern Pacific, the Spokane Falls
"Chronicle" says: It seems now to be
the headquarters Jfor gamblers and
"bunko sharps. They make use of cun
nin? devices to trap the unwarv. Re-

of their tricks, by which ianocent par
ties have been robbed of their hard
earnings. The gang who invested this
city for several days are doubtless lo
cated there now.
Under date of the 10th insL Sam
uel J. Tilden sent a latter to Daniel
Manning, chairman of the Democratic
state committee of New York, formally
withdrawing from further political as
pirations. This is supposed to settle
the "old ticket", business and explode
the democratic thunder in regard to
presidential election of 1876. But it
was a powerful bomb in the democratic
camp. Now they are awfully at sea
for a man to fleece and sacrifice this
year.
Newdaia, June 19. The work
train which has been clearing the San
Fernando tunnel, on its way to Lane's
yesterday encountered an engine with
the pile-driver and several flats which
blocked the way. The collision oc
curred on a short curve, about a mile
and a half from this place. The ncrth
bound engine had its head knocked in,
three flat cars were disabled and a Chi
namen was slichtly injured. Other
wise the damage was light and the
track is clear.
From the Albany Democrat we learn
those items: We understand that the
hop pickers of Lane county are con
templating hiring Chinamen this sum
mer instead of Indians and white peo
ple to pick their hops, the reason for
the move, if taken, being that they
will do it a few cents cheaper. This
is hardly fair, and certainly is not con
sistentwith the spread eagle opposi
tion to the Celestial; yet it show's how
much more many think of a little
money than principle.
St. Paul, June 19. This even
ing there occurred what will probably
be a double murder and suicide. J.
C. Cechura, owner ef a house, had
rented rooms to Mrs. Catherine
Messrschmidt, aged 76, and her daugh
ter, Margaret, aged 27. The women
paid the rent to Cechura'a wife, which
angered him, and to-night he entered
tba rooms of th mother and daughter
armed with a large butcher-knife, and
after a short talk, he atiaeted the
woman, stabbing the old woman in
the back and breast, resulting in in
staat death. Ho then attacked the
daughter and stabbed her in the left
lung and inflicted a dozen other
wounds. 8he will probably die. Ce
chura then went to his own room,
locked himself in, took poison and cut
the arteries of both his arms.
