X Constancy he said: And leaned as be said on the pasture bars, That be vowed by the heavens blue By the silvery moon and the shining stars To ever prove leal and true. "Men change, 'tis true," ho said, "but oh J Believe me my own dear love, Affection like inihe, as time will show, Has a strength that no power canMfeiL SHE said: "No" fear or doubts, beloved, have'I, For deep in this heart of mine Is a love that will never dim and die, But will last foraye like thine!" He gave her 1 ring and a fond caress, While hci tears like a torrent fell; As with fall'ring words and in sore dis tress, Ho bade her a long farewell. But the man in thc moon, who had often viewed Such tender scenes, I ween, W inked knowingly then, as the lovers stood Beneath, in the silvery sheen. Two summers with blossom and bud are gone, Two winters with frost and snow; And again, the man in the moon looked down On the whirling world below. And what did he seo ? Why th lover had won A widow with wealth galore, While the maiden had wedded, that very morn, A man she had known before. Quoth the man in the moon : "It's exact ly now As it was when the world began, No weaker thing than a woman's vow, Excepting the vows of a man." These things have given the man in the moon Such cynical views of life, That this is the reason he lives alone, And never has taken a wife. -as Shipping a Baby by Freight. Passengers who arrived here from San Franeisco by the the last steamer breught and circulated a most singular Btory about a live baby having been shipped in a,jbox by'4freight from Vic toria'to San Francisco by the stauier Mexico, and arriving at its destination without injury. The story as told by the Victoria "Times," "Pop" Gardner', new paper, is as follows: "It seems, so the story goes, tbat a leading society belle of San Francisco, who is an en thusiast in the matter,, of collecting curiosities, wrote to a young man here to sand her an Indian curio some thing so unique as to excite the envy of all her friends. The young man purchased a papoose from the mother, but for some time was at lois how to forward it. He finally put tho papoose and a five gallon can of milk in a box just large enough to prevent the young ster from being tumbled around by the action of the vespel, and fitted the box up with padding and bedding. To tho can he attached a tube, from which the baby can help himself to milk whenever so inclined. The air holes of the box wero numerous, and as it is particularly under the charge of the purser, tho infant will probably reach its destination a bright baby. Whether or not the young lady will consent to receive him when he arrives is what is agitating the purser and the freight tlerk." That may do for British Col umbia, Brother Gardner, but you would not have had the jierve to try ucha fable in Portland. "Oregon ian." The American Girl. Stylish and pretty, independence porsonified, but very honest and pure minded, is the American girl. She adores pleasure, dress, luxury; shows herself morally with concealment, such as she is, in a manner to deceive no one; knows she is attractive, and loves to attract without committing herself. Flirts all the winter with this one or that one only to dismiss him in the spring, choosing immediately an other. Her resources are capital which never lie idle. She goes out V alone, or, when it suits her better, with a male friend, with a confidence with out limit and an intimacy in appear ance conjugal. She leaves her daughters to enjoy the liberty which she herself has en joyed without grave abuse. Since nothing serious happened to her, why should Mary, Fannie or Jennie be less strong or less able to meet any emer gency? In one sense she has created the Paris fashions. Parisians detest her, provincials despise her; yet men of all cations are bewitched with her, though they do not marry her unless she has a large fortune. Crude carbolic acid will disinfect drains. It is better largely diluted, for thus it reaches further. It is a poison. There is a carbolic soap pre pared for killing insects on animals. We lost a valuable dog which got some of tho eoapsuds in his mouth. There is a finer carbolic scap used for toilet purposas. It is healing. "Willamette Farmer."
