This sad event which has brought such great sorrow to the heart of a family and cast a gloom over the com munity, is relieved by the fact that it was the result ofan accident? -Any one with the opportunity cf the writer to investigate maybe readily convinced that the deatbofthclatcCiintonSchiefii clin was the result ofan accident, winch might happen to any one. That it was not even momentary insanity is ap parent from the fact that he spent the preceding evening aiding the youngest kon in the family in his mathematical studies, and was mere than is usual cheerful and happy, andslept all night soundly, and not to exceed five minu tes preceding his death talked intelli gently to his wife nbout the 6tate of Lis health; and was in the act of dress ing for breakfast when the accident occurred. That it was not financial of domestic causes is assured by the fact that his business manager assures us that his affairs were in the most satisfactory condition, as Mr. S. well knew having talked the matter over the day prp ceeding "his death. It has been but a short time since his sister left, after making a long visit with him, during which time he was in excellent spirits. His immediate family, in every Bense, were a source of gladness rather than or sadness to a ' father. Their social and business relations to the community are of the best, to which he had made reference only the day previous to his death. As a husband and father he was loved and treated with the respect due his relation to each and all. These are facts well known to myself. The circumstances show conclusive ly that itwaB an accident. The revol ver was one left in the house by an ab sent son, which the deceased had never used, nor was he familiar with such weapons. The late burglary in the vicinity led him to provido against a surprise, and so he purchased borne cartridges, loaded the weapon and plac ed it under hi 8 pillow. Mrs. 3., being timid, removed it to the stand drawer vithout his notice or knowledge. On the morning of his death he had occa sion to open the drawer for some niedi- eincoY and-ill the E&ily IwiiiguL was suprised to lay his hand upon the wea pon. The stand and bed are so close together that when the body fell the Epaco would not admit of the prostrate form, but left it in a bowed btate. Surprised by touching the weapon he seems to have stooped to look into the drawer, at the same time lifting the weapon. The attitude of his head was such as to bring it in the line of the muzzel of the weapon, which was a self priming revolver, and being unfarriliar with it the discharge was accidental and the result fatal. The facts relievo the family, friends and community of this best deep sorrow. It is but an act of justice to the memory of the dead that these facts be made public. Longfcllw's Grave- y Longfellow has no tombstone, no s mound, no memorial. Wo found his grave by the number of the lot. The whole place is smoothly sodded and surrounded by a stone coping. It is on a terrace. One sideof the lot runs almost perpendicularly down to a low er road. The place seems Gttod na(- urallr for a vault, but only a bank of green met the eye on tho deep hillside. Unmarked as it was, it was sunound eJ by viftors young and old, home people and strangers. No need to ask, no need to tell who was Longfellow. There were people there from beyond the Rockies, and they gathered the grass-blades' to take back with them; a schoolboy treasured a sorrel blossom that grew by the way; and the very dust of the carriage road, I believe, would have been prised because it had been near to him, to the body that had dwelt with "that boautiful spirit," whose fame his friend Emerson in his feebleness had forgotten, but whose beaut death-shadows could not dim. On our way home we passed in front of tho queer yellow house, rather weather-beaten and dilapidated, that had so long been Longfellow's home. The great tree?, the shrub thickets, v.ero just as he had described them. I could fancy the old clock ticking "Xeveil forever!" on the mansion stair; tho chestnut chair empty, and by it the jeweled pen that "Helen" gave him; the books of manuscript verso all neatly tucked iu their coroners; the rouvenirs of friends looking down from the walls of the ancient dwelling.
