On the 14th of June, 1777, Congress provided that the flag consist of thirteen stripes, al ternately white and red, with a blue union bearing thirteen white stars. By the act of Jan. 13, 1795, the flag was altered and mado to consist of fifteen stripes, but in 1818 the original number of stripes were adopted, while the field was to contain twenty stars, with ona to be added upon the ad mission of any new state.
