A visit toour beautiful cemetery can not but impress one with tho great im provement that has taken place in it iu the last few years. This change is due to Mr. W. L. R?ord who intro duced the artistic marble work from the San Francisco establishments that are furnishing Italian marbles at lesi ian American stone has been costing as. Among the noticable pieces of work are the Boddy monument, the olegant tablet to the memory of Wood ford Reames; that to Mrs. Wrijht, the exquisite little stone nat shows the resting place of little Mab Turner and a number of similar gems that have been lately erected. Mr. Record is at present connected with the houses of Ed. McGrath and McCormick, in San Francitco and has succeeded in build ing up an extensive trade in Northern California and Southern Oregon which lio intends increasing by every legiti mate means. He expects to make Jacksonville his head quarters and will establish a yard hero early in the spring which will bo in charge of a first class marble cutter and carver. This will enable parties to get work' done in the best syle but monuments to the memory of loved ones should bo durable and, after all, the foreign mar ble is not only tho most eleeant and enduring but the cheapert. Mr. Rec ord is now Cllinc; orders in Northern California but persons desiring to reach him at 728 Market St. San Francisco can receive prompt answers. ISIr. Record is deserving of patrontge and we hope for the sake of the con tinued ornamentation of our "City of tho dead" to see him receive it. lie lias labored iard for three years to build up a business and hopes by superior work and fair prices to con trol it and we believe he will. At all events he is entitled to great credit and his work speaks for itself. Tin: t j:ms. The New York "Herald" in a late issue has published a very interesting resume of the census. It shows brief ly that the nation contains 50,153, 782 people, of which number 43,475, 480 are native born on the soil. There are 881,857 more males than females. The whites number 43, 402,970; the colored G.GS.TOS, the Chinese 105,488; the Japanese 148; the civilized Indians CG.407. The census takers dare not bother with ApacheB. Of the 7,000,000 foreign ers 37 per cent are German, 35 per cent Irish. The Germans will always outnumber the Irish, but there need be no alarm about vacancies on the police force as their number will not drop below 2,430,000. Pennsylvania has tho greatest number of public schools 17,019 but New York spends nearly $3,000,000 more for ed ucational purposes. Illinois owns the most live stock; value S132,G37,7G2. Missouri has the greatest nuirber of mules, owning not less than 193,027 of these democratic appendages. New York leads tho list of cow owners, . butter and cheese makers and milk producers, the figures being 1,437, 855 cows, 111,822,423 pounds, of but ter, 8,3G2,590 pounds of cheese, and 231,965,583 gallona of milk. It also raises the greatest quantity of potatoes 33,G44,S07 bushels. Ohio owns 4, 907,480 sheep, and Iowa '0,035,310 hogs, hich arc the highest Ggures, and Illinois tops the horse owners with 1,023,072 head. There are 91, 977 lunatics in the country. Tho adjustment of salaries of post masters, of presidential clashes, has just been completed by the postoffice department, The readjustment- effects tho - salaries of 2170 pof...-Uo. Forty-four office? ha e beca added to the presidential list and twenty-five presidential offices hae been reducrd to the -fourth class, leaving the number of Presidential postoffices on October 1 at 2175, with salaries amounting to 3,750,000. Every prt of the country is included in the readjust ment. Tho changes in some of the latger offices are noted below: Chi cago, present salary 4000, salary as adjusted $G000; Cincinnatti, present balary 4000, salary as adjusted 5000; San Francisco, present salary 4000, salary as adjusted 5000. There wil'. be 325 members in the next house of representatives, instead of the 293 of the last house. The Eastern stales have the ninety-five the' had in the last house the western states have 109 instead of ninety-two the Southern states have 121, instead of 100. Ohio has gono Democratic by abont 13,000 majority and Iowa is Repub lican by 20,000. Ohio never fails in doing this in an pfi" Year but is one of tho most reliable Republican States at presidential election. jjF,mmn. (ll'U LH COlItT 1IUI&E. The near approach of the comple tion of our magnificent Court House prompts us to again mention it in a spirit of local pride. We doubt if ever better or more conscientious work witsevqr done on a public build ing than has been done by the con tractor, Mr. L. S. P. Marsh, cm this. Tho plan has been strictly adhered to and every portion of the wood work being perfect and as well finished as if dono for a private party. Mr. Marsh took the contract to build the Court House for the sum of 32,000 from the bottom of the foundation to the tower agreeing to have it finished for cccupancyby Feb. 9th 1884, buthe, has pushed the work so energetically that it will be turned over to tho County Commissioners by Nov. 30th, this year, and tho November term of court will bs held in it. The public may form an estimate of the magni tude of this work when we state that it contains over 400,000 brick; over 70,000 feet of framing and rough, lum ber, 80,000 feet of sash, door, finish ing and cornice, the roof requiring 50,000 shingles. The foundation alone cost 0,000 and is substantial enough to support a much higher building, containing 950 perch of stonr. The tower is vory ornate and well proportioned giving the building a symmetrical and beautiful finish at the top, being 70 feet from the ground and surmounted with a flag-staff 20 feet in height from which the stars and stripes will soon iloat. Messrs. liy ars & Guerin, sub contractors for tho brick work and plastering, hare done their part in a very creditable manner apparently trying to see how well, rather than how quickly, it could be done and they deserve credit for the handsome way in which it has been accomplished, so far. It is expected that all the plastering will be done within two weeks and the finishing of each room will be a question of a very short tixo. The tin work on the gutters, roof and tower was done by K. Kubli and excellently well done. Tho lower story of tho building will bo occupied by the County Clerk, Judge, Sheriff, Assessor, County Com missioner's and District Attorney, and adjoining the County. Clerk's office is a securo fire prof vault that will hold the records of Jackson county long after this generation has passed. On the second story, reached by winding stairs from the front vestibule is a spacious court room 70 by 42 feet, the corners of which ars broken with masonry so as to render its accoustic properties more perfect. In the front wings of this story are Grand and Petty jury rooms and in the rear wings a private room for tho Circuit Judge and one, approached by a near stairway, on the opposite side for the reception of prisoners or legal consul tation with their attorneys. This buildins has been a necessitv for the past twenty years; we doubt if there will ever be another as handsome and enduring built within this State at so little cost and, with proper care, there is no reason why it should not last a century. It is, indeed, a struct ure of which the people of Jackson county may well feel proud and pub lic thanks are due to Mr. Marsh and those who assisted him in carrying out the plan so faithfully and honestly and who have arrived at perfect work without regard to their own profit or convenience. 11 elsliti anil Measures. The following standard of weights and measures is taken from tho laws of Oregon: Whenever wheat, rye, Indian corn, oats, barley, clover seed, buckwheat, dried apples, dried peaches, apples or pcan shall be sold by the bushel, and no special agreement as to the measure or wciijhs theieof liall bs jarda by ihe parties, iho mttuure thcieicr fli-J.l be ascertained by weight, and shall be computed as follows: Sixty pounds to a bushel of wheat or clover-seed: Fifty-six pounds for a bushel of rye or Indian corn.
