Mal r ATaUXS. Maid of Athens, we most part, I hear your' father I must start; He's broken of his midnight rest; JMscretioa on my part is best; I'd better flit. " Maid of Athens, ere I go, Kiss me once,' for luck, you know; Your father's fool is on the stair None but the brave deserves the fair The gas ain't lit. Maid of Athens, just once more Little ships must hug the shore ; Hark! the dog has broken his chain. Zounds 1 1 am in hard luck again Great Scott! I'm bit. "Chicago Tribune." A Philadelphia Judge was recently bliged to pass judgment on a row (hat had grown out of a cheap dance. He made some sound and sensible re marks about this class of amusements that should sink into the hearts of parents. He said: "These so-called balls are a pest to society. They are fruitful of the most degrading vice, and their influence is all the more to be feared because of its insidiousness. Young girls who would shrink from an open and flagrant source of iniquity are induced to visit these dangerous gatherings by representations that they are for harmless pleasure. They are given first, perhaps, soma mild" and harmless beverage, and then cajoled into drinking intoxicants. After this their ruin is almost certain. , It would be a rjood thin:; for society if such forms of amusement could be extirpat . ted." No truer words were ever ut tered. "Denver Republican." Absconded. Nate Clark, employed m the store of the late P. F. McMan us, at Plevna, in Oregon, near the California line, on Klamath river, and who was appointed Administrator after the death of McManus, absconded lately with about $1,500, which his bondsmen will be obliged to pay over to Mrs. McManus. According to the law Mrs. McManus could not act as Administratrix in Oregon, not being a resident of that State, although she acted in that capacity in this State for the settlement of her late husband's business hero. Mrs. McManus has been over at L:nkville for some days past, to see what she could do in se curing Clark or the moneyy and found that Clark was out of reach of the officers, and that her only resource was to make the bondsmen settle for Clark's defalcation, as Administrator, 4Yreka Journal." "Talking about mean men," said a patrolman at Broadway and Franklin street "I went to arrest a Jew the oth er day and I found him cutting his own hair. You can say what you like, but he took the chromo for meanness." "Oh, no," replied; a Hebrew merchant, winking at the bystanders. "I can discount your story. ,1 went to a Baptist Church last Sunday out of curiosity,, They passed a basket for collection. I put in ten cents. The man next to me had the nerve to open his coat and show his shield. He was a police officer in citizen's clothes. He'll get the chromo, never fear.' "N. Y. Sun." The great New York and Brooklyn bridge does not promise to be a paying enterprise in the near future. The receipts for the Grst seven days after the opening were 10,000, but they hare been declining ever since. The averasre for the 2Z days after the open ing is $850. The cost of. operating and maintaining the.strupturo.and pay ing the interest on, tb,e bridge bonds is $800,000 a year, or, over $2,000 a day. Aa a convenient highway between the two cities, it is 01 great valuer but as an investment it is far from being a success. A remarkable thief has been, caught in Chicago. He is young, handsome, well educated; very gentlemanly, and wonderfully audacious. Hje liyed sev eral months at the larger hotels, dressed in .such, an extreme of the fash-. ion as to attract attention, and paid his bills promptly;, and all the money was obtained by sneak, thieving in the rooms of fellow guests. In, one in stance he took a bag containing nego tiable bonds worth $3,000. When caught at last by a watchman, ho drew a pistol and attempted to escape by murder, A man. made a, wager with a lady that he coujd thread a needle quicker than she could sharpen a lead pencil. The man won; time, 14,minutesaml 40 aeconds.s It is thought the result would, hard been different if the woman had not run oat of lead pencil inside of five, minutes. Chief Moses has agreed) to qyit his reservation and; go to the Colville. The government gives him an annual pension of $1,000 and other considers ijpa will bo liberally provided for with farming. implements anttcattlo.
