FRED GROB. tm .' itt I - a w - re. av at I .aiaiis.aa.aavvu mwmv .- - Washing-tos, Jan. 1 New Year's reception at the White House was brought to an abrupt termination by a most painful accident. At the con clusion of the reception to diplomatic corps, Hon. Elisha Allen, minister from the Hawaiian islands dropped dead from heart disease. Mr. Allen waa tlo dover or dean of the diplo matic corps. Ho had conducted tho prnrentatioa of members of tho corps to the President and when the cere mony was concluded walked to the cloak room and asked for his wraps. While waiting for a servant to bring them he fell, and instantly -expired. Dr. Norris, of the navy, was imme diately summoned from among the visitors, and he pronounced death to have been instant and heart disease the cause. The President was receiv ing members of the Grand Army of tho Republic when the sad news was conveyed to him; and orders was im mediately given to close the White House doors. Thousands of citizens who were waiting their turn to pay their respects wereunable to gain ad mittance, and some time elapsed be fore the cause of the ending to the re ception as known. Mr. Allen was born in Salem, Massachusetts, Jan. 28, 1803. He was a lawyer by pro fession and served in the Maine legis lature from 1836 to 18-11, and in 184G; in 1838, was speaker. He was elected Representative in Congress from Maine from 1841 to 1843, serving as a mem ber of the committee of manufactures. In 1847 lie moved to Boston and was a member c? the Massachusetts legisla ture in 1847. After the expiration of his term he wa appointed consul to Honolulu, and soon after entered the employ of the Hawaiian government. In 1857 lie was made chancellor and chief justice of the Sandwich islands, which position he has held until 1854. Mr. Alien was presented to this country as minister from the islands on Jan. 14, 1870. Tho Secretary of State has received the following from minister Morton Paris: "Tha death of Garabetta caused a profound seuation in France. Iu his death the government and people of the United States lov! a devoted friend, whoso great admiration for our country and all our institutions were expressed on all occasions. His death i3 to the members of this legation, a great loss and personal sorrow." Roast Turkey. The secret in hav ing a good roast turkey is to stuff it palatably, to baste it often and to cook it long enough. A small turkey of seven or eight pounds should bo roasted or baked thrco hours at least. A very large turkey should be cooked on hour longer. After the turkoy is dressed sea-son it well, sprinkling pepper and salt on the inside; stuff it and tie it well in sbapp; either lard the top or lay slices, of taeon over it; wet the skin and sprinkle it well with pepper, salt and flour. It is well to allow a turkey to remain sometime stuffed before cooking. Pour a littln boiling water into tho bottom of the dripping-pan. Just before taking it but of the oven put on more melted butter and sprinkle over more flour; this will make the skin more crisp and brown. While the turkey is cooking boil the gibleta well; chop them One and hash the liver. When the turkey is done put it on a hot platter. Put the baking-pan on the firn, dredge in a little flour, and wbpn cooking, stir in a little boiling water or dtock; strain it, skim off every particle of fat and add tho giblets; sea son with salt and pepper. Feminine Brevities. The Ehorter the tunnel the sweeter the kiss. "Time works wonders," as the woman said when she got married after thirteen years' courtship. When rain falls if she gets the bigger half of the umbrella they are lovers: if "he takes the bigger half they are mar ried. "What kind of a picture would you prefer, Miss?" inquired a photographer of a young lady customer. "Well, was the reply, "take me with an ex pression as if I were writing a poem on love." A South End. woman keeps only one servant to do her work instead of two. She says help is always leaving, and when you are left alone it's much easier to do the work of one servant than of two. "Haven't got a few roses growing in your back yard, I reckon," sug gested a seedy man to a cashier, " a few little faded roses, with a bit 'o leaf and a string to tie 'em up witbl" "Haven't got any back yard to be gin with," replied the cashier. "Not even a little bit of a pink or blue bell or foregt-me-noU" sighed the seedy man anxiously. "Nothing of this kind," trrowled the cashier, "Don't keep 'em." Coulden't you get me a dandelion or a bunch of grassl" entreated the seedy man. "Just a little something to put on a child'sgrave. A plaitain leaf, a sprig of parsley, just a cabbage leaf, even. I want something green for an infant's tomb. Can't you find me a little something to decorate my baby's gravel" "Been dead longl" asked'the cashier, wiping his eyes. "Three days," sobbed the bereaved. "If I could only get a whisp of straw or a bale of hay, to show that I hadn't entirely forgotton that lene grave." "Take this," roared the cashier, tearing the nosegay from his button hole. "God bless you," ejaculated the seedy man; "God bless you and yours. Do yon think it will keep while I walk to the cemetryl It is only four miles." "Walk, man!" clamored tho man with misty eyes "Walk!' you must rido to that lonley grave and deposit your offering of love. Here, take this dollar, and may the sweetness of your grief last long after the poignancy has been worn off on the grindstone of time." The seedy man thanked hira with streaming cheeks, but that night he was frozen out of a jackpot because tha dollar was a counterfeit, and pluggod at that. The Vlllnrd Endowment. Mr. Villard has signified his willing ness to comply with his proposition, the State having mudo the appropria tion required by Mr. Villard's terms. He will place in the bands of tho re gents 50,000 in Northern Pacific six per cent, bonds, interest payable semi annually. If, however, at any future time, the board or regents can secure a more profitable investment of the fund, they are at liberty so to do. So soon as there are available funds, many plans looking toward the general im provement of the University will he matured, the first being tha addition of two tutors, already chosen to the corps of professors now employed. Tho regents also hops to soon establish a reading room in tho "University, the nucelus of a fund for that purpose being a 100 donation by Henry Fail ing of Portland. Tho University will bo grateful for further additions to this fund from any person desiring to con tribute. Origin of the United States (3) mark. The dollar was called a "pico of eight" (that is eiqht reals) before it was known as a dollar, and the $ mark was a common representation of it, being a figure eight with a line drawn through it. It was quite cus tomary when using a letter or figure of a word, to draw a line through it, to show that is was employed in a sense distinct from its ordinary meaning. The fanciful interpretation, attributing it to the pillars of Hercules (to be found on the old Spanish dollar) tied together by a wreath, has no founda tion in fact. It is often seen in its early history as a piece of eight (with out tho lines) and appeared for a long time with but a single line through it. The double mark was first used for dollars in the plural. The Xew Geography. How many farms are there in the United States? 4.008.C06. How many dwellingsjn the city and country? 8,955,812. Langtrv, husband of the Jersey Lilv, is reported toliave arrived in New York. $3 PER YEAR Feeding rigs. Therp is a popular idea that almost anything will do to feed pigs with, refuse of evpry kind being thrown to the pig styo. The wisdom of this course was illustrated in an action tried at tho Swindon County Court, Eng. Lord Bolingbroke's hear! keeper kept two pigs, two of which h nold through an agent to a man in the village in which he resided. The flesh tho pi;F wero sold dead, by the carcass appeared' perfectly satisfactorily, itnd Vas cm d in a manner which was admitted to be proper, but when converted into bacon the produce had a most extraordinary smell and appearance, resembling to use the language of some of the wit nesses the appearance and taste of Hallow, and when exposed to the air turned yellow. It was not disputed that the pigs had been well fed, and it was proved that they had been fattened on barley meal, but it was also ad mitted that the haunches of a large number of rabbits Lad been thrown to them, the result being that the flesh was impregnated with a peculiar odor attached to rabbits and ground game generally. The learned judge was of th opinion that there had been no at tempt to deceive in the matter,, that the owner of the pigs had fed them upon the supposition that this kind of refuse wculd da them no harm. The result, however, proved the contrary, and the purchaser was recouped for his loss by a verdict of 4, beinjj about half the original price. This should prove a warning to those who enter tain the idea that any kind of food is fit for swine. "English Exchange.'' Forty-Five Miles of the O. & 0. R. R. Accepted. Rev. E. R. Geary, James Fisk and Col. J. McCracken, tho commissioners appointed by the President of the United States te ex amine and report to the government the condition of the southern exten sion 6f the O. & C. railroad cams up last week and went over tho newly con structed road and formally examined the same as far as the West Fork of Cow creek a distance of 45 miles south of Roseburc, and duly accepted it. They reported this part of the road the best along tho entire line between Portland and the southern terminus, the same being laid with steel rails and well ballasted the ontire distance. Tho "Oregonian" in speaking of the coun try through which the new extension passes very justly says: "The scenery is oi the most beautiful description, surpassing that of the far famed Alio ghany region. Tho commissioners en joyed the trip very much, and found a good hotel at Myrtlo creek kept by Mr. Buick, which conduced materially to their comfort. From the beauty of the scenery and the fine hunting and Gsking in the hills and streams there, this section is dostined to become a favorite resort fcr tourists and sports men." This is not an exaggeration of the country south of here, but a truth which the future will amply demon strate. Aside from its beauty, there is an abundance of undiscovered min eral wealth yet concealed among the fair hills along this ronte, which will invite the attention of ihe enterprising capitalists and bring new industries in to this part of the State from which rich reward may be expocted. The Montana Cattle Trade. Speaking of tho Montana cattle trade, an exchangwsays that four years ago not to exceed 4,000 or 6,000 head of cattle came out of Montana and sought eastern markets via the North ern Pacific and its connections. This season the Northern Pacific handled 18,000 head'of Montana cattle be tween the 11th of Sep ten bor and the 11th of October. The daily average now coming out of the Territory is, practically, all that the railroad has facilities for handling, and will make an aggregate for the present month of nearly or quiti equal to that of 'the four weeks above recorded. During the season up ts the 1st of September about 10,000 head came out, so that to the present time it may be ej ed in round numbers that the em Pacific has brought out ol tana not less than 32,000 hea the season not over two thirl These figures very clearly deij that the tide of shipment ea. Montana cattle will flow in tB of tho Northern Pacific to tli the capacity of the channel
