k TnAauscm.NC ruocmiATiox. State of Oregon Executive Office, Salem, Not. 8, 1882. la accordance with a custom long established and in pursuance of a rec ommendation of Chester A. Arthur, President of the United States, I rec ommend that Thursday, the 30th day of November, A. D. 1882, bo observed by all the people of this commonwealth as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to the Supreme Ruler of the universe, who has vouchsafed to us blessings innumerable during the year just past. He has granted abundant harvests to the husbandman, prosperity to our commercial interests and general health to all of our people. For these and other blessings which have been our portion, I would recom mend that upon the day named all se cular business be dispended with and that our people assemble at their Souses of vonjaar trcJis truessmp Iwith the purpRes of this proclamation Rive unto god thanksgiving and praise for his many mercies. In testimony whereof, I have here unto set my hand and caused the great seal of State to be affixed thereto. Done at the capitol at Salem this 8th day of November, A. D. 1882. Z. F. Moodv, Governor. By tho Governor: E. P. Eaiuiabt, Secretary of State. A Modest Luucll. Patrick Diver a New York saloon keeper, was awaiting the departure of the train for Tottenville, when he was accosted by a rough-looking man in tatters, who asked him for a. dime. Divqr had 6omo knowledge of the man, having seen him about his saloon oc casionally. The man told him he was starving. Diver said ho would give him no money, but taking outjiis pencil and note book he wrote the following'sote to Ed. Koppers, hotel keeper at the landing: "Give this poor fellow a dinner whatever he wants. Will settle the score when I comeback. P. Diver." Armed with this note the tramp went to the hotel and ordered first a mutton stew, n plat of roast vral, and corned beef and cabbage. Having eaten most ravenously he ordered a plate of lamb and its ac companiments, a large dish of toma toes, four dishes of peas, and two plates of salmon, and tho man took a xest for a few minutes and then drank three bottles of Scotch ale in success ion, after which he ate four hard boiled eggs and an apple pie. Tho bill was $3.95. "N. Y. Times." Children's Chances of Life. An English writer on vital statistics cal culates that of ten children born in Norway a little over seven reach their 20 th year; that in England and tho United States somewhat less than seven reach that age, while in Franco only five reach it, and in Ireland less than five. It is also ascertained that in Norway out of 10,000 born, rather more than one out of three reaches the age of 70; in England one out of four; in the United States, if both sexes be computed, less than one out of four; in France less than one out of eight, and in Ireland less than one out of 11. Further, it appears that'in Norway the average length of life, or the effective population, is 39; in England, 35J; in France not quite 33 years, and in Ire land not quite 29. Is Obesity a Disease?
