HkrS JVH.VIKOITVU Jf KNOUT. Chicago, August 2C. A rac.ption "m tendered to Mrs. John Brown hy the Union Veteran Club at Englewood tonight. Mrs. John Brown was the guest of Captain II. A. Parker, Presi dent of the club. Mr. and Mrs. Par ker introduced their guctts to tlioso prejent. Early in tic evening, Mrs. Brown received visitors in a room where nho sat, tho object of the intor st, pity and respects tf hundreds. The colored people appeared to bo es pecially inUrosted in the widow of the man who so nobly and faithfully de fended their rights. At about 8 o'clock Mrs. Brown was escorted to tho platform and took her beat beneath, the twining banners of red, while and blue, which formed -a .pleasing and striking back-ground, together with the time honored musket and a wreath -which encircled'the words, "Ourdead." The scene was certainly impressive. Captain Parker arose and traced the progress of the anti-slavery movement and old John Brown's part in it, and then told the cad story of his last, great and tragic end. The history, he said, was one which would .ever remain green in the hearts of all true Ameri- cang. Tho gathering to do honor tol hi? widow was owing to the heartfelt interest which was taken in the ca,uae. Itor. M. Iln-rUiu and lion. Cyrus Coy made a few remarks. A particularly touching point was when a number of colored people, (headed by a zealous old lady, sang ""John Brown's Body," in that weird chant peculiar to tho race. A hand some sum of money was quickly do nated and presented to her. Mrs. "Brown will be tho guest of Captain Parker until Monday, when she will bo at the service of the committee ap pointed by citizens, who propose giving great public demonstration. "Wjiat is an Ingrain Carpet ? The twoplying ingrain known to the trade as a fabric composed of two webs or pHea of cloth made with different colored yarns say, one ply green, the other red of equal consistenco or ttexture, united at the edges of selvages ef each by selvage threads, and ingrained !j or united at different parts of the cloth, wherever called for by tho design or -pattern. If the red ply represents the Ihe ground color of the design, then the green will be the figure color; and whenever tho green -figuring ply np .pears over the red ground ply, that is -ingraining. The more general this in graining or mixing up of tho two webs or plies, the better the .fabric is in-, grained, and the longer it will wear. The three ply ingrain is made and in grained after the samo manner. A two-ply carpet, woven on the same 3oom and "mounted" in the same uian-i neras a two-ply ingrain, if woven plain, without any design of pattern, would lie a-seamless lag, or two bags' joined itogother by one side of each. Almost every wine country used to make brandy; but it is only in portions of the old French departments of the uuarente and Uharento-Inferieuro (the' ancient bamtongo .and Augoumois) (that the brandy known ior ages as ceguacis produced. The general de struction of the vines and the improve-. onents made within the last ten years in distilling spirits from other material tare led to -tho almost complete aband onment of distillation from French wines. In the years 1872, and 1875 and 187G an average of 10,000,000 gallons of brandy were produced from wino. Last year only 1,000,000 gal lons were made.
