B., in the Roseburg "Plain dealer" of July 22d, sends the following to that paper: (Thursday morning, July 6th,while the' roads were yet saturated with-the copious rainfall of the 4th and the air cool and bracing, your correspondent drew the lines over a, goodly "turn out" from Carlon's and struck for the front," to enjoy a little relaxation from long confinement at tho desk and a little recreation, riding over the country; seeing new sights, visiting friends, snuffing fresh country air and enjoying ourself generally. Our course lay along the line of the extension of the 0. & C. R. R south from this citv. This road follows the sinuous winding of the South Umpqua to a point about 30 miles south of Rose burg. The river then deflects to the east and the road to the south-west, where it enters Cow Creek valley at RiddleviUp, follows up that valley about 30 miles further to "Dowville," and a little further on tho railroad strikes Cow Creek hill, through which the company are boring or preparing to bore a tunnel, something over 2700 feet. Here the company -have a large force cutting the "approach" to tho tunnel. It is a stupendous under taking. The woods surrounding the "approach," covering over 200 acres are alive with workmen whoso clang and (clatter in all the peculiar phases of diversified labor incident to such an en terprise are almost deafening. The stentorian voice of command of the "Chinese herders," the neighing of horses, the braying of mules, tho felling of trees, the ringing of anvils, hammers and tongs, the cracking of whips, the creaking of wagons and carts, chopping eawing and hammering, and at stated periods tho explosion of blasts, making terrifio sounds in the hitherto silent forest, are truly wonderful, transform ing the soft "woodland echoes" into a sort of pandimonium. But, under the supervisory management of one mind, all this diversity of labor moves with precision is aB regular as clockwork design, order and system being ob served throughout all this multitudin ous division of labor. At a given signal to tho teamsters to "knock off for dinner," it was the 'work of scarce one minute till a caval cade of horses, with their drivers, were moving toward camp, and at another given -signal an army of Chinese went scampering pell mell whooping and hallowing in Celestial gibberish to the Chinees 'quarters, and about tenmin ates comparative silence reigned, while pork, beef, beans, potatoes, cabbage, rice and other edibles disappeared from mortal gazo to fill the stomachs of the hungry army of laborrc, washed down by the usual beverages, tea, coffee or water the latterindulged in quite spar ingly. Notice was given that at 20 minutes to one o'clock the -'stump blast" would be fired, and that all persons must look outfor themselves and their teams safety, so at 12:30, the laborers having bolted their dinners, set themselves in motion towards a place of safety; some wenthalf a mile away, others got behind large trees and waited in suspense the explosion, which occurred in about 8 minutes after igniting the fuses. To one unaccustomed to it, it was a grand sights The explosion of 200 or 300 pounds of powder that had been care fully placed under tho base of some giant fir that had withstood the storms of centuries, whose far-reaching roots had burrowed their interlacing fingers firmly in the bosom of Mother earMi, produced deep dentdnations lite the artillery of Heaven, throwing skyward tons of wood, earth and rock that was truly awful Notice.
