Miller, of Portland and which we publish with hia consent Resource of Oregon and Washington. Vj - Vain! in vain we mortals on this western verge Of terra's broad domain, oft Invoke and urge The muses presence; ret silence broods anon O'er Hood's chill visage, no fabled-Helteon Is, near, upon -whose wrapt crest and mys tic steep The listless gods in. dreamy languor sleep. Aganlppic's waters on the heated plain Oi far famed Bocotia is sought in vain ; The inspiring draught the fevered pulses " thrill And the child of fancy soars where e'er it - will, Tet oft moeks the lips of him who stoops to quaff Then the Bneering world sends up a cruel laugb And breaks the spell. , The gods resent the wrong, Inspire 'a curse and withhold the pleasing song. i. Glorious muse divine! Strike on thy won- derous lyre And breathe upon me Heaven's celestial fife. Take up the harp and renew the tuneless string; Convoke the gods, bid the choral voices . ring; Tune mine eager ear that I may catch the strain That .flushes the soul with music, sweit ' with pain. Lol No messenger attends, not mine Uie power To wake the muses or invade the mystic bower. The Orient fades in a quivering glare, As'the Occident floats its gems on the air; Where the sun bathed in splendor smiles its adieu To riespcrian waves, to me and to you, There. I turn, though still unattended bv fame, Or .blest by renown, although all that a name s- " . Can symbol, or all that abides in a word AroJ thine; but unlike the rare Paradise Bird, I leave no regal plumage beautiful thing Loved for itaeir, while long the bird's ceased to sing. But this scroll, the shadow of self, I now give In this union of letters; though I may live In gold fretted manors, in some blissful isle, "Whsro choicest blessing are showered all the while, Or forgotten and lone, bowed down by de spair, Where the moan of the pines are borne on the air, Orv whither or whence In the marches of Time, The-Fates urge me onward, in whatever clime , I abide o this earth; let this token be An offering of friendship between you and me. MINES OX ROCIX KITEK. 'jillonj Rojjue River, extending from the. mouth of the Illinois upwards, a greatdeal of mining has been done on the low bars, by cheap and simple methods, but often with very flattering returns; while the high bars, which are numerous and extensive, and all gold bearingj-liave never been worked owing to the labor and expense of obtaining water. Opened properly, and worked whbn giants, these bars will jet become the grandest,, and most productive gold field ever found in Oregon. 'Yarlosi Cmases- 'an Advancing years, care, sickness, disap-. pointment, and hereditary predisposi tion all operate to turn the hair gray, and either of them inclines it to shed prematurely. Ayeu's Hair Vigor will restore faded or gray, light or red hair to a rich brown or deep black, as may be desired. It softens and cleanses the scalp, giving it a healthy action. It removes and cures dandruff and humors. By its use falling hair is checked, and a new growth will be produced in all cases where the follicles are not destroyed or the glands de cayed. Its effects are beautifully shown on brashy, weak, or sickly hair, on which a few applications will pro duce the gloss and freshness or youth. Harmless and sure in its operation, it is incomparable as a dressing, and is especially valued for the soft lustre and richness of tone it im(iarts. It contains neigher .oil nor dye, and will not sou or color white cambric; yet it lasts long on the hair, and keeps it fresh and vigorous. For Sale by all Dealers. To all who are suffering from the er rors and indiscretionsof youth, neivous weakness, early decay, loss of manhood, fcc., I will send a reciepe that will cure you, free of charge.
