A NEW SI OUT ABorr CD. GliAXT. It has just leaked out that wliilo Gen. Grant was traveling inlEia te expressed a desire to get a shot at a lion. Not wishing to expose him to any danger, the natives secured a stuffed lion and set it up in the jungle, and then took the illustrious traveler out for a hunt "When the beast was sighted the general was all excitement, and crawling up to a favorite position, began to blaze away at the animal with no perceptible effect. After firing about twenty shots he began to get mad, and taking off his coat he settled downifor a regular siege. Fearing his wrath when he discovered the sell, the atten dants endeavored to induce him to givo up the attempt to .kill the beast, tell ing him that ho boro a charmed life and he could not possibly injure it He told them to go to thunder, that ho was after blood and was going to havo it. After a vain fusilade of half an hour, he aroso to his feet, gnashing his teeth with rage, threw his suspen ders off his shoulders, rolled up his leeve3 and grabbed his rifle by the barrel so he could uso it as a club. The attendants begged him to desist, but he politely, though forcibly, told them that he would have the cuss or leave his honored remains strewn pro miscuously all through that jungle; and with a wild cry of "I'D fight it out on this lion if it takes all Summer!" he rushed upon. the beast and with one well directed blow laid it over on its side. Then he chased the native at tendants for six miles; but, being bet ter acquainted with the country, they got away from him in safety. Grnliu of Void. A curt answer has two edges. The doctor' memory is apt to fail. None are overstocked with patience. The right must sometimes yield or fight. Death has nothing terrible in it but delist life Jiau TnsdA no. Censure is the tax a man pays the public for being eminent The roan lacks moral courage who treats when he should retreat. Motives are like harlequins there is always a second dress beneath tho first Make a man think he is more cun ning than yourself, and you can easily outwit hfnw. If you would render your children helpless, never compel or permit them to help themselves. Genius, Money and Labor. Ten nyson can take a worthless sheet of paper and by writing a poem om it make it worth 5,000. That's genius. Mr- Vanderbilt can write fewer words on a similar sheet and make it worth 50,000,000. That's capital And tho United States Government can take an ounce and a quarter of gold and stamp upon it an "Eagle-bird" and "Twenty Dollars." That's money. The mechanic can take the material worth "550 and mate it into a watch wot th 100. That's skill. The merchant can take an article worth 25 cents and sell it to you for 100. That's business. A lady can purchase a bonnet for 10, but perfers to pay 100 tor one, be cause it is more stylish. That's fool ishness. The ditch-digger works 10 hours a day and shovels out three or four tons of earth for 1. That's labor. Drifting vs. Hydraulicing!. It costs from one to two dollars a cubie yard to work gravel by tho drifting process. Experience has shown that the yield per cubic yard from some of the hydraulic claims in Nevada county in round figures is as follows: Ameri can mine at Sebastopol, 24 cents; Blue Tent mine, 15 cents; North Bloom field mine, less than 10 cents;. Milten mine,33 to 47 cents; Manzanita mine at Sweetland, 27 to 33 cents; In Memphis a man is liable to both fine and imprisonment for carrying concealed weapons and in St Louis fines as high as 100 for a pistol and 200 for a slung-shot are being im posed. This movement is made be cause out of twenty-five homicides re cently in the St Louis jail all but three became ciminals through the habit of going armed. You have probably observed that tho most difficult persons to get along with are those who are always perfect ly sure that they are in the right and equally sure that you are in the wrong particularly, as is often the case, when you know you are right.
