Do salmon die after spawningl This question has been argued" pro and con, but the experiments by Mr. Livings ton Stone have definitely determined the fact that salmon die after spawn ing. This gentleman built a dam over one of the rivers impassable to salmon, which he says, "settled the question finally, and proved beyond a doubt that of all the thousands of Sacramento salmon that spawned in the McCloud, not one in a hundred returned to the tea alive." The remarkable persisten cy with which theso fishers in the Co lumbia river and larger streams, travel hundreds of miles to fulfill the pro creative callings of nature, is most re markable, and when it is considered that many arrive at their spawning grounds with their heads battered out of shape by contact with the numerous obstructions during the ascent, it is singular that so few survive to return to the sea. Stalisticsof the chewing gum business have been collected and reveal that . school girls do not consume the bulk of that staple, as had been supposed, but that factor- girls take the premium as gum chewers. The spruce gum trade of Maine amounts to $40,000 per an num. There is not a city or town in the state in which it is not scld, and there is probably more sent out of Maine than is used in it.
