HOW A CVCLOXK J.OP1IS, The "recent terrible cyclone in Macoupin county, Illinois, is thus des--cribed by 'Enfneer Cutter, of tbe 'Chicago and Alton expre&s train, which was running at full speed, and met .;the tempest near Carlinsville. Mr. 'Cutter saw out on the prairie what he -supposed to be a straw or hay stack on ifire. Aii he approached it, lietawtliut it moved raj)idly toward the track, and realized that it was a cyclone of the most appalling character. It was a dark, funnel shaped cloud, reachin -from -the ground 'high in the air, wlierF it disappeared into tho clouds. It wan 'black and dangerous looking, and irbirled with -terrible vtlocity. Its Toice, heard even in the distance abovi 'tbe rumble and roar of the train, was "frightful in the extreme. The cyclone seemed to travel at the rate of twenty miles an hour, and was so fast ap jprotchmg'thnt the moving tiain must in a moment inevitabley strike it. Mr. Cutter shut off his engine and ap plied bis air brake just in time, for, despite the precaution, tho train 'touched tho cyclone's outer edge. Mr. Cutter describes the bight as the most lorrible he ever saw. The air was lurid and dark, and hot, as if from an oven. Everything in the pathway of the storm was demolished, and crushed, and annihilated. Barns, fences, sheds, telegraph poles, and everything at all fragilo was swept away. iJr. Cutter and his fireman -croucbod down in the tender, and for a moment feared that the-whole train would be overturned. The cars were only held on the track by their safty chains. The passengers, who at first wondered at the stop, with blanched checks and terrified counten ances, viewed the terrible monster of the air in its work. Never Ce It. My son, never use tobacco. It is a Tile weed, and has caused tho death of many good men. Only the other day there was a railroad collision in "which a smoking-car was smashed to pieces, and the seven occupants killed. If those seven men had never learned to smoke they would be alive to-day, and their widows would not be skirmishing around to hire some one to keep their husband's graves green while they lay for fresh matri monial victims. Then look at the American Indian. He lias used to bacco, when he could get it, for many years, and he is disappearing rapidly from the face of the earth. Gen. Grant was President of the United States, but he smokes frightfully, and now he is a national pauper? and has got to travel with tho World's Circus and Conglomerated Aggregation of Mechanical Curiosities for a living. He may even have to go to St. Louis. So, my son, beware of the narcotic weed, for it will destroy your body, weaken your mind, and make your breath smell bad. If you have any of the deadly cigars about you don't de lay sending ihcut right along to this office, Tvhere they will be burned up. The,Chicago Mining Review prints the following: "If the prospector in the field finds a specimen and wishes to test it for mineral, let him proceed as followsr Pulverize tho rock in question; take one part of that and two parts of gtrnpwdtr-tbak-ftGrp3r cartridge will answer. Add sufficient water to make a thick dough, knead and make in pyramid shape; let it drv En the sun or near the fire; when dry set it on a flat stone and apply a live coal to the summit of the cone. When combustion has ceased, i? mineral was contained in the ore you vill find a button on examining the ash." A cotemporary says: "A newspaper and a newspaper editor that people don't talk about and sometimes abuse are rather poor concerns. The men and business that an editor sometimes feels it a duly to defend at a risk of malting enemies of another class, are often the very first to show ingratitude. The editor who expects to receive much charity or gratitude, will soon find out his mistake; but he should go ahead and do what he conscientiously thinks right, without regard to frowns and smiles." Kansas having passed a law prohibit ing the manufacture of alcoholic liquors in the State, the winegrowers, brewers, and distillers propose to test, by law, the question whether a State can adopt laws which ruin their business and reduce the value of their property itnout awarding compensation.
