Tho fuller accounts of the death of Prince Louis Napoleon drawn from the repoits of tho court martial on Lieut. Carlcy bring out one touch of romance not before published in this country. The ill-fated Prince Iiad on nt his death his great uncle's sword, Xapoleon I wore at Austerlitz. The trooper who, turning in his saddle, caught the last glimpse of the abandon ed prince, saw him drawing his sword, the sword of Austerlitz, for his last de fence and that weapon was drawn in tho bright December sun 75 years ago, now hnngs in the Zulu kraal. The Littcn st epigram spoken of the young pretender was Victor Hugo's, "Napo leon of the Little was at least the nojih p.w of Ausleilitz; but Napoleon the Less he is the ton of Sedan." but the death of the fourth Napoleon with the sword of Austerlitz in his hand will do much to take the sting out of the epigram. TJVer- Tttinvrti Alirmf liplf ruist iuno oclock on last bunuay was discovered tliat Mr. Abram Teni brooks's residence was on fire. A number of people of the neighborhood, who were then on their return home from church, Raw the flames, but every thing being as dry as kindling, the tire liend made- such rapid progress as to render assistance, in the matter of sav ing household ofiects, or even in check ing the fire utterly impossible. The occupants of the dwelling were nroustd from their peaceful slumber, by the roaring of the fire and tho crashing of falling building, barely in feaMm to avoid being infolded in the leaping flames. The entire house and its con tents were consumed, including a con siderable lot of valuable goods in the cellar. It is supposed that the fire, i-inco it originated in the kitchen, caught from the cook-stove. We learn that another dwelling will bo in course of erection in a short time. "Lake view Herald." Strange how ashamed a man will he of a shabby "umbrella one of thofe douchy. cotpuleut affairs, with the blenched ouUiowring divorced from a third of the ribs, and a string clasped around its waist in lieu of the long vanished elastic! How lie will hide it as far as possible under htsann, run it up his coat sleeve, tuck it away beneath tho folds of his coat, keep it between himself and the wall; ar.d when he gets in the car how careful he is to dispose of it in the darkest possible cornerl And if perchancojanybotly spies it out, how quick he is to head offentieism by explaining that it is the one lie keeps in his office so convenient to have one there, you know; .one that you know nobod- will steal ha I hat Or maybe he willj'go a step further the lyinp rascal and say he borrowed it, and if he didn't return it old Gifmshaw would never forgive him ha! ha! l?ut when the clouds lower and the rain drops begin to patter, who so at oase, so envied, so proud and happy, as the man with the-shabby umbrella, as he fitalks along between rows of unpro tected men and women, with his des pised umbrel dripping its liquid harvest indiscriminately on the just and unjust? "Verily there is nothing in this life wholly good or wholly bad. "That reminds me of a little anec dote," is what every bright man has heard overund over again, as his mem ory has been jogged by som one's tell ing a good story. When 'pood storits and ready repartees arc going on, out witty little thing is sure to sugge.t an other. Thus we thought, a day or two since, when reading in an eveuing pa - per that Charles Summer was no musi cian, and that a lady fri-nd once told him that if he was to buy a music-box set to "Old Hundred," she drd not be lieve that he could make it plaV "more than seventy-five," It was dtVbtless something in the same vein that prompted old Sirs, llothsehild, Vhen ninety-seven, to .say ,ro her physician, "Doctor, you niustkeejimeup fortaroe rears more at least: itwould be its' creditable for der par." 2 to ga off i To Ike Feuple of Northern California and &omiitrn uregon !
