Wo are very sorry to state that on Friday morning Mrs. "William Hoffman slipped on the ice in her door yard and broke her left arm just above the wrist. Wc are sorry to notice that some evil disposed per son has been amusing himself by tear- og off the pickets from Mr. Hoffman's fence. Wo do hope this charge can not be laid to any of our boys for they have not a nobler or truer friend than Mr. Hoffman and they should be ready to protect instead of destroying his property. Quarterly Meeting. Quarterly meeting of the M. H Church North, was held in the Baptist Church in Manzanita last Sunday. There was a large attendance, qui to a lai'ge num ber going from Jacksonville. Bev. Mr. Chapman of Ashland and Bev. Mr. tJrowell of this place delivered eloquent discourses and a very deep interest was manifested. 'Ordered to Stop Work. At a special meeting of the Board of Trustees on the 14th inst., protests from Mrs HcCully, Mrs. Litt'e and Mrs. Williams against the mining of Sushi it Wais man -were filed. After much discussion it was ordered that Becorder Haydcn notify Smith fc Waisman to discontinue their excavations on Fifth street, anl to place said street in good condition -without unnecessary delay. Jones Esq., has filled up an office opposite the court house. "Wo hear of a nugget of gold worth about $104 having been found on Sil ver creek lately. St Peter permits no one to pass the heavenly gato without a receipt from tho printer. Our treasure is still tightly locked in the arms of "Jack Frost" and gold dust is scarcer than ever. The personal property of J. L. Bad ger, deceased, will bo sold at public auction on January 25th. The sale of the academy property at Ashland on February 8th is the en gsossing topic at that place. Eight feet of snow on the mountain between Waldo and Crescent City and one freight team snowed in on the sum mit Postal Agent Steele is a candidate for the Portland Post office. Mr. Donegan's advertisement ap pears elsewhere. Pat is one of the old est mechanics in this place , a first class workman and willing to exchange labor or take cash if preferred. Coyotes have been making free with Mr. Hamlin's lamb's lately. Uncle Jim is going to try asafoetida and strychnine and the varmints will soon enjoy caper sauce with their mutton. Our friends in Yreka are enjoying a foot of snow, splendid sleighing and tho mercury below zero. We neither envy the latter enjoyment nor beg -udge the water which will follow the for mer. Some of our exchanges mentioned the fact that our state prison is over flowing and that the convicts will have to be picketed out Many of them should have been, long ago by the neck. General Grant has been snubbed by the authorities of Cork but the wel come extended by the warm hearted people of Dublin, Belfast and London dery more than compensated for the affront - Win. Carl, the energetic Division Agt. of the 0. & 0. Stage Co. passed Northward on Monday. Carll says they are wrestling bravely with very heavy mails but are bound to push them through on time. General Grant is to make a trip the tour of the world before returning home. He is being received with more distinction by the people of all civilized countries than was ever accord ed to a citizen of this Republic. East week a large number of our young ladies indulged in the exciting sport of coasting on Reams' hilL There were a number of narrow escapes from serious accidents, notably Miss Maggie Linn, Ida Martin and Annie Little. A- G. Rockfellow passed thiough town last week on his way from the Willamette valley to his home at Ash land. Last week Mr. Hanky's boys dis covered some coons snugly domiciled in a hollow oak limb and prooeo led to smoke them out Unfortunately the limb was too dry and the coons were cremated without affording any sport The following officers of ELerby ville Lodge L O. Hughes, Esq., County Clerk of Josephine county for the past twelve years, paid Jacksonville a visit on .Monday last. Mr. Hughes reports miners and farmers generally idle in his county owing to the unprecedent ed freeze. Some of tho school boys made a snow ball target of Professor Kugler tho other day which was not appeciaed by thut gentleman who folloved them to tho school room, pointed them out, antLthey were severely reproved, by Mr. Merritt Among the prisoners whose senten ces have just been commuted by his excellency Gov. Thayer, wo notice the names of Daniel Doty, Cba'lc3 Wil son and F. W. Knowles of Jackson county, and that of George Dougherty and R. E. Herring remitted. Wo had a pleasant call from A. J. Adams, School Supt, of Josephine county, during tho week. This was Mr. Adam's first visit to Jacksonville after an absence of eighteen years, and he was much surprised at the great im provement during that time. The contract for carrying the mail from Roseburg to Coos Pay, was award ed to J. W. Warren an Eastern bidder, at about $4,300 per annum, but Mr. Warren finding himself bit failed to connect The department has called "next" and in tho mean time the people of C003 Bay are without mail facilities. Pat McMahou informs bk that ho wrote twice to Senator Graver on mail matters but that both letters were un noticed. Mr. Graver's constituents should not complain as it takes all tho Senator time to explain his official re cord as Governor, and that is probably all the use he will over make of his position as Oregon's representative. Applegate Items. The health of our people is pretty good. This has been" a splendid Winter on stock so far, is all looking well at pres ent Weather still cold and frosty. The general desire is for rain, but still it does not come. The most of our miners are studying how to amuse themselves while wait ing for rain, and looking rather blue. Nothing being done in the farming line, as the ground is frozen too deep and fears are entertained that the grain sown in tho Fall is very much injured by the freeze. L. McAllister Si Co. are. now hav ing a ditch surveyed, taken from Chen ey creek, and five or nine miles long, by Alex Watts. It is intended for tho ground between Cheney creek and Cheatham's ranch. - ITpaid the Picket creek mines a short visitrbut did not find them doing much as they had not enough water from both ditches to run the small pipe, but they are well prepared to make the dirt fly when the water does come. No work being done on any of the small claims. Williams creek has the champion laughist of tho coast, he being able between and at meal times to laugh longer and louder than any one else; and that creek has also the champion wife beater and choker, for recently he choked his wife so hard that she was entirely senseless for sometime, but I do not think it fit to disgrace your paper with his name. He had been paying his devotions to the damsel for sometime but would have switched off long ago but was fearful of the old woman; still he ven tured to take another gal to a party, but now he repents in sackcloth and ashes, for he came back and is now again the chosen vassal. This is the way A. and J. told me. it again. Seriously Injured. We regret to learn that Ed. Cawley, who former ly drove between Rock Point and Lev ens', was seriously injured .near Calla hans Ranch, in Scotts Valley. Last week a voting resident of this county, enamoured of a Josephine county damsel, called at the residence of Mr. Hughes in Kerbyville. "Are you Charley Hughes" he askedl "lam" replied Mr. Hughes with his blandest smile. "Are you the clerk's office" inquired the youth No" said Charley, "but I am the clerk, who do you want to marryl" The necessary information received Mr. Hughes asked if she was old enough. "Ye3"said tho boy, "I brought a man along to swear sdie's eighteen besides here's her dad's con sent" "Are you twenty onel" asked Mr. Hughes. "No sir I aint" No license then. "Oh that's played out" remarked tho determined swain. "I'm only eighteen but here is my dad's consent too." The lkeasqw-u issued and the young, fellow wanted I le clerF" LfcMna'rry them forthwith, "tony 1 cant do it,'' said Hughes'I only au thorize others to do the marrying, but I will put you on the right track. Judge Floyd can do the job." How over, the couple started, and reaching the Judge's residence, the mystic words were soon spoken and the twain made one. Turning to the. Judge the groom asked "married for sure, no go back on it?" Assured that the knot was se curely tied, the groom informed his honor that money was scaice and asked him if he couldn't wait for his pay. "Why of course" said tho kind official, "that's all right" Returning to Kerby the coup!e announced that ther couldn't pay their hotel bill, and they sailed out for home blessing the man who invented the credit system and feeling that poverty was no serious bar to real happpiness. The cases of Jackson county vs. Lake county and John Orth, County Treas urer vs. George Nourse, County Treas urer were on motion of defendant con tinued to givo them time to procure copy of transcripts from Lakoview, the original transcripts forwarded to the clerk of the supreme court having been lost without their fault These cases will both come up and be decided at the present term, but probably not for a month or six weeks yet, owing to the length of time it will take to get the new transcripts. Mr. Watson, at torney for the plaintiffs, unwilling to remain so long, placed the plaintiff's cases in the hands of Goveror Thayer Real Estate Transactions. Our pagan neighbors ushered in their "New Year" on Monday evening with the usual barbaric ceremonies. A free lunch of "loast" Jiog with "blandy sauce" was spread and "John" jabbered and chatted and screamed with delight as tho night wore on and the sauce had its due effect The 'fearful music and the beating of gongs was omitted this year probably in deference to feel ings of the American portion of the community. Tho Chinese say they are poor this year but it seems that like some of our own people they can al ways find means for anew year's spree. Tellurium Mine; Yesterday wo had a conversation with Messrs. Briggs & Muncy of tho above named mine and wcro informed that on the 6th inst they struct th J main fledge and are now over six feet therein. The tun nel is now drifted in to the depth of 410 feet and the ore shows a fino assay, and tho company feel confident of ul timate success. These mines are sit uated in the Cow Creek mountains, but a short distance from Canyonville, and it is a demonstrated fact that for rich- nessof mineral deposits these tains excel. "Statesman." moun- Local Items. We will always be under obligations to our subscribers who will take tho trouble to send us items of news. Peoplo frequently complain that the papers contain but I little news of local interest, but they do not reflect that it is so difficult to to gather them. If people- in every precinct would send us an occasional item they would thus exchange with each other and keep posted through the press. Wo will always be glad to hear from our subscribers. Tee Weather. There is, we are glad to note, every indication of ap proaching storm. The barometer is steadily falling and the temperature is rising. We hope for storm but will not attempt to make any predictions, being neither a weather prophet or tho the son of one. We are like tho boy, however whoso father was a weather "sharp" we can alwaysi come within a day of it the old man could tell the day before, the boy the day after. .Let it rain. Deady's court, has been surrendered by his bondsmen and com mitted to jail with the privilege of jail liiniK William has thirty days in which to decide whether he will pay tho judge ment of about thirty-seren thousand dollars or declare under oath that he is unable to do so, and he may yet beat the United States and Mr. Dowell on the execution. "Verily the way of the transgressor is hard." Doty was convicted at the Novem ber term in 1875, sentence four years. Case appealed to Supreme Court and affirmed March, 1876. Sentence would have expired March, 1880. Knowles was convicted of assault with intent to kill at the February term, 1877, sentence three years. Time would have expired March 1880. Wilson, convicted of grand larceny at the July term, 1872, sentence nine years which would have expired Au gust 1881. Calico Party. A very pleasant and enjoyable affair may bo expected at the rooms ofthe Jacksonville Social Club on February 14th St Valentines day. Tho ladies are to attend attired in simple calico and the gentlemen may appear in full dress i they see fit Tho an nouncement that the Club will givo a party is a sure guarantee of its suc cess. Supper whereever you please. Let us all go and have a good time. Tax Collected. Sheriff Bybee has collected up to date a little over 11, 000 of taxes due for 1879. The whole amount to be collected is 33,135 98. Taxes are coming- in so slowly that the Sheriff will be obliged to visit tho de linquents, and tho thirty day's grace having expired, those who havo not paid their tax may expect mileage added.
