Mail Bag Foum. A mill bag wbb
found shout seven miles this side of Canyon-
ville last Saturday. I be batr bad been cut
open by some one, and its contents bad bten
scattered around promiscuously and in conse
quence were considerably damaged It must
have been there lor some lime as letters and
papers found were dated from Sicramento
March 1 3 1 II, and ateo from Jacksonville on the
15th ol the same month. Max Mnllrr informs
us that this bag was mpno-id to have been
lost and that s-arch hid been marie for it at
the time, but that it could not be found. 'I'll'
persons finding the hag brought it to town

A man by the name ot II. E Luckliart
was arrested at or near Rilter's place in
this valley, by Sheriff Manning on S'lii
day on a warrant swoin out by a Mr.
Birdseve, charging him with taking a
watch from the dwelling house of stid
Lirdseye. He at first denied having
the watch about him or having taken
it from the house, but upon searching
hi 111 the watch was found upon his per
eon, and was identified by itherpartie
as the property ot Mr. Birdseye. . He
iiad an examination belor Justice Still
6on on the same day, and bail fixed at
$300, in di fault of which he was com
mitted to j ill. A special Grand Jury,
consisting ot A Bish, E. K. Anderson,
S. Arrasmith, Lwir Mi-Daniel and
R. C. Arrastionir, A. II. Booth by and
Granvillo Najlor, were empaneled,
ho brought in an indictment ot lar
ceny in a dwelling bouse. Lockhart
plead guilty, and was on Thursday sen
tenced to two years in the penitentiary.
When we knew this man a few years
back he vas a well-to-do saddler over
in Yreka, but it was impossible (or him
to abstain from drink, until lie has
finally run tho length ot his rope, with'
tbe result abov e stated as tho" natural
consequence of this last wrong doing.

Linkville." Under tbe above title we
observe in the Yreka Journal of the
9 th instant, an editorial which is so pal
pably false in some of tbe assertions
made that we cannot feel justified in al
lowing them to go uncontradicted.
Although tbe author does not assert
tli -it be wants the line from Ashland
discontinued, that is the evident inten-'
tion ot the article. We are sure that
the people ot the Lake basin would not
object to an additional line from Y.'ekn,'
coutiectinn with the Ashland. line at
Klamath River, Linkville orsome other
point, but that such a ronte is made
important from reason of the present
one being impj8able for nearly hall
the year, is an inexcusable falsehood.
There has been a mall line insuccesslul
operation from Ashland to Lake City,
via Linkville, for over three years, and
the contractors never fail to make
schedule time indeed, they are usually
some hours ahead of time on arrival at,
Ashland from Linkville. This ronte can
be kept open quite as easily as the other
during the moat severe wealiier. .The
Lake country having been settled prin.
cipally by Oregon people, they get the
far greater part of their mail via Ash
land, and it a Yreka 1 ne should be sub
stituted for the present one, it would
indeed be a 'niund'the horn" route for
the citizens of ihe Lake country. Again
it is quite refreshing to be informed
that a number of- post-offices could be
established on the proposed route, "es-
jjieijally at Linkville, the connty seat ol
Lakl coutity," when the line has been
operating for several years wih post
offices at various points and Uncle Geo.

As to the mail for Fort Klamath, we
have only to suggest that as the Head
quarters o this Military Department is
in Portland, the principal burden ol

journal which has been usually regard
ed as an exponent of the truth, and we
can only account for this case on the

Correction. In our account of the
arrest of Mr. Doty lat'week we stated
that some ot the parties who had acted
as bondomen tor his at pearance before
the Grand Jury, had refused to go on
his bond again af'.er the Grand Jury
hid found a true bill against him. We
hac bince been informed that this was
not lhecae, and that these parties were
not called upon to act in this capacity
on the second occasion. We; are al
ways ready and willing to correct any
misstatement of tacts that we may make
through mistake. We heard the story
whuh was published last week from
one who wo thought was good author,
ity, and who ought to have been ac
quainted with the circumstances if any
body at all was.

Hear Sir: Having wrote to yon last
jWeek concerning the new discovery of
quaru id inis.campi irom ueureay, uuu
from specimens shown me, I now take
the privilege of writing"again after see
ing it myself. On making my trip with
the mail last-Friday- I-met with a gen-1
iieruau mat inongni J. was numuuggeu,
and that the quartz stibwrf me had been
taken in-there trom Gold Hill or from
the Swjndenledge, whereupon I deter
mined to see for myself, and it I had
misrepresented the thing I would rec
tify it before it could go into print. On
arriving at Galice City I found Messrs.
Scott and Coz tliero anil told them
what I had heard. When through re
lating my story Mr. Scott invited me to
visit the ledge and satisfy myself.
On Saturday morning, in company
with five others, I started for the ledge.
We traveled some 3 miles to Quartz
villet where wo went into Mr. Scott's
cabin to rest, and while there examined
a lot ot fine specimens he had laid away
in a flour sack. Af Cr resting about a.
halt hour we started on our tramp for
the ledge a;ain, passing over the famous
Yank ledge and on down Rogue River
over a very rough trail for about a mile,
which, Mr. Cox informed u?, was be
coming dangerons. Wo traveled on
some two hundred yards farther when
foreman Mr. Scott came to a halt, and
we all threw ourselves upon the ground
tor a rest, and while resting here one of
our party told rather a laughable story
ot a Mr. George Wcacks passing over
this trail ill '52 carrying a ten point
buck; when he came to this point the
buck struck the rock which projects
over the trail knocking him and the
buck, which was fastened to him, or he
to the buck, off the trail, and that they
brought up some two hundred feet be
low, the buck on top, and Weack's knees
sinking into the solid bedrock some a
inches. vY e did not see the prints of
hisvkuees from the fact that vre did not
go below to examine ; neither did we
lake much ot the stoiy, but was told
that Mr. Weack's still lives on Butte
Creek to testily to the truth of the
statement. Alter heating this story wo
started on again and traveled for about
