THE OREGON SENTINEL JACK8UXV11.1.E1 Battodat, Jcxb 26, 1875, BEPUBUCAN CENTRAL COMMITTEE. A Meeting or tbe Republican Slats Central Committee of tbe Slate of Oregon will be held in the clly of Portlana, on WEDNESDAY, tbe Hlhday or July, 1875. L. S.SCOTT. Chairman. Dehocea'cy. Democracy baa been tried and lound wanUn. It once stood before the people as a party of honor and justice. But it turned its back on freedom, persecuted its cham pions and has became a mere tool of the save power. InOdeliiy to principle brought corruption into its admiiiistra tion. When the Nation rose in 1801. to cast it out from its high office ol governmental control, it was not the political freak of an hour but the e solveofa people that had no further use for a party that had betrayed it trnst. lis fall was the death blow ol the power which sustained it. The grave of slavery eliotilj have been the grave of Democracy. As a political power, it should have been banished from the field of Ameri can politics. But the power of evil of tentimes outlive the institutions which generated it. Slavery is dead, but it f ripened fruit, corrupt Democracy, still lives to exert its banelul influence on the destiny of a nation. To lesist the spread ol its political poison, require fidelity, watchfulness, enerpy and thorough organization on the part of those who love their country, and de sire its goverment to remain in the loy al hand of those who saved it from the deadly attack of Democracy aud Slav- eiy. Republic A Cunning Swindle. What is known as "straw bid?," or bids made by irresponsible parties says the Bulle tin, are frequently put in for mail con tracts with the Government. After an award is mado the successful bidder re fuses to comply with the contract, and the practice has been heretofore in such cases, to make contracts foi Uruponry Bert ice, of course with the old conipan ies, who are likely io be the only par ties prepared for imine Jiate woik.and ni-cessaiily at cxoiliitant figures. This systematic swindle is now in a fair way to be broken up. The Postmaster Gen. eral announces that in every case ol failure on an important route, he will -notice through the pres, and with. hold contracts for temporary i-erwee until others besides the old contractors shall have an opportnnity to ofleMur the serice. Mr. Jewell is determined to make an earned effort to break down the system of straw bidding, and the consequent perpetuation of contracts. n tho same hands. In Arkansas, LouiVi ana and Texas many of the routes are long and profitable, and in those fail, ures are feared in the awards recently made. The Centennlal Year. The Cen tennial jubilee may give birth to many fooln.li things, but none so luolixh as the restoration of Democracy. To celebrate the biith of a nation by le Etoring to power its would-bo assisMns, would be a bitter satire on justice and consUtrnoy. We must round out our hundreth anniversary by giving an old fashion welcome to the party that rmde tho Centennial possible. Anything short of a rousing majority lor men and principles that best reflect the stein patriotism of our early fathers, would be ingratitude. These men and principles make up the Republican party, to tin m belongs the honor of a grand Centen nial victory. A Hideous trick was played on a widow lady in London, on Eister Mon. day. She received an Eister egg ol un usual beauty, but upon opening it to take out tho gilts it contained, lo! a huge Seulh African scorpion ltll into her hand and slung her. For days her lifewa8 despaired of, but she recov ered. The poibon gilt was t.eut-by a rejected snitor. Tho San Francisco Bulletin is in. formed on official authority thai, the t cnty of reciprocy between the United Stalls and the Hawaiian government has been ratified by the President -md His MajeMy, the King. Exchange ol ratifications was made in Washington on the 25th ult, by the Scret:ry ol State and Chiel Justice Allen, his Ha waiian majesty's minister. Rattee Snakes are bad around Win neruueca. Joo Bowers lately encoun tered and slew one that was eight feel long and had sixteen rattles on its tail. Winncmncca Mountain i all alive with theso engaging creatures, and their se ductive music frequently exhillarates tbe drowsy traveler. The Democratic Party. The country ought to understand the existing condition of affairs, and what may be expected from it, and the peo ple should resolve to act intelligently and in a right direction. By the oc currence ol one of those freaks in the last election fcr members of Congress, which sometimes mark our political contests, says the Republic all calcula tion as to the result was impossible, and the Demociatio party s cured a major ly in tho House of Representa tives, while the mnj"rity of the people are Hi-publican. Whatever may h.ne been the cause of this denouement, it hi hooves us to examine carefully into the character and qualifications of the parly Vhich has achieved so sudden a success, though so obnoxious to the na tion, and ascertain its capaciiy to pro tect the public welfare, and to guide llic country through a period of ac knowledged difficulty. It has been olten at-ked, what are the principles of the Democratic part? TliA.qtipnUiin wan answered during thif last Presidential campaign. '"The Democratic party," said a gentleman, "never had but two pillars on which to stand, or upon which it has sloo I for filly v ears, namely: slavery and negro hating, and whiskey." True, slavery has beendestroyed, but the Democrat ic parly regiels its destruction. Itn hatied of the negro is so ingrained thai it seems as il a Democrat could hardly reg rd him as a human being. But il lovo of whickey is as firm a ever, in spite of the temperance cause; ami it use of it in localities not advanced i civilizition, shows what a force it is. If 1 lie strength of the Democratic party did not coiiMbt mainly in popular igno rance, a larger number of intelligent men would bu louud in its ranks. Its surprit.0 was intense when il dcowr ed that the party was successful, though it numbered no more votes than when it had olten bemoaned defeat. And it discnv ered further, thai its suc cess was owing to Republican supine ness, which prevented 'llmnsamls Ironi going to the polls. Tlie intelligence ol the countr,y, therefore, failed in its duly and let the election go by default. The usual high purpose and love of truth, as applicable to the great bus iness ol life, were absent, and ihep-iriy mo-t afraid of truth came into power on .the shoulders of the neglect. Bui the hUtory of the Democratic parly cannot be concealed by its fears, nor 7 blotted out by Hs misrepresentations; and, indeed, its fears are justified, for it will have to .face the truth which 11 ought to have heard, and which ruighl have freeil the ciunlry from Democrat, ic ascendancy. The pirtyis now on trial balore the nation; and were not the situation so grave, we might say that it reminded us of the Irishman that was brought into court for an offence he had committed. The Irishman trembled and wept, and was otherwise uneasy. His lawyer sought to comfort him with the assurance that the court would do him justice. ''()," died the Iii-hman, "ho iiiy sowl, justice is what I am afraid ol 1" The Irishman was convicted ami suffered. And that jtt lice will be meted out 10 the Democrat io parly, we have not a shadow of a doubt. ArFAins in Tux as and Mexico. A Washington special says a high official who has returned from a visit to the Texas border teports a very deplorable condition of things. He says the out. tdde public has no idea of the real slate of affairs this side the Rio G ramie. A Aide flretch ol country is inhabited by Mexican'. They preponderate ovrr American", and thereby have control of all convictions of Mexican thief-) who cross the border and plunder the Ameiicaus. Upon the part ol the Gov ernment oflici.ils exists grave apprehen Mini of serious difficulty with -Mexico Her Government is powerless to pre vent outrages. Cortina rules in defi ance! of the Mexican Government, aud is closely leagued with Mvxicius on this si le in schemes for plunder. The prom iiied move to t-upeisede Cortina is not believed to have been male in good faith. Nearly all of the inhabitants on the border depend on stealing tor sup port. Texan are now fully aroued war to extei initiate N nut improbable. It is sad to say that there are so'me 4'ery mean people in Boston, although most of the ladies weir straw colored spectacles. A rich woman there hires her sister as a servant, treats her in all respects as a meni-il, n will not allow her to sit nl the family table. The hus band of that b astly female takes great interest in the condition ol the freed Uiin in South Cintlin, and never, otv any account suffers' himself lo loose sight ot Bunker Hill Monument, n AnOeegon Mining Compast. Not long since says the IZvatiiig Journal of the I81I1 iust., we mentioned that a com pany was incorporated under the title or tbe "Oregon Quartz Mill and Min'nj Com pany," for the purpose of 'working certain mines in Josephine County. Yesterday we were slow n a piece of qaariz tnken from tbe cropping?, and which is so rich tbal the part'-, cles of gold can be seen on every side ol il. The company have one hundred tons of quartz ore ready Tor milling at the Unld Hack mine and about sixty tons at one of the olher mituF. A party of men under Kelly, lormely a-sayisi lit Seattle, are working tbe mines. They are also patting op a large water wheel in life v.- cinity for lumbering purposes. Last Tuesday a five stamp quartz mill, which the acompany purchased, was snipped from San Francisco on a cojst steamer running to C"0S Bay. The ial.1 is of the best quality, the stamps being 8C0 lb each, and it will be delivered during tin week at Crescent City. A Mr. Sherman, who lias had cnn-ulrrable experience in California nnd Nevada mints, and gave t tic name to the town of Sherman in the latter Slate, says that the quartz is of very fine apjiearance, nnd the prus peels "f llie company.
