U. S. Grant. of Mr. and Mrs. Orme, who live on Foots creek in this county, justly creates quite an excitement at Tehama, Cal., where he was most brutally and cowardly shot by M. J. Donohue, a painter of that place. The facts in the case are these, as we get them from our exchanges. On the evening of the day before the shootim: took place, Orme and Donohuo. had some difficulty over a game of pool, in which it seems that Donohue was entirely to blame. The difficulty at the time did not assume any serious character, and was soon brought to a speedy close, without any one being hurt. Donohue being in liquor and very quarrelsome, it was thought that when be sobered up it would all be dropped without further disturbance. But on the morning following Donohue became intoxicated, and procured a revolver and threatened to take the lite of Orme on sight. Orme was in formed of the threats of Dnnoliue, and MARRIED. They are such men as Garrison, Smith, Phillipps, Beecher, and a host of others, who have spent their whole lives, not in seeking lor office, but for the liber ation of society from ignorance, super stition and bondage. These are men ol principle; men of character; men that stand at' the head of the Nation in learning and ability. These men have never sought office ; and; with tho exception of Garret Smith, they have never occupied any in tho Gov ernment. They have been content to labor for the people lor no other re ward tban that ol an abiding faith in the right, and for the moral satisfac tion it has given them to see the cause of justice and truth prosper. Aside from these, Grant is supported by nearly the entire Union Army; men that were ready and willing to lay down their lives lor the defense of their country, without slopping to in quire what caused the war, or who were to blame in getting it up. Again, ho is supported by the entire force of the consistent and honest statesmen of (ho Nation ; men whoso opinions have been found to be correct, as they have been given, irom time to time, on the great' National questions of the past and tho present. Grant, thon, is supported by the wise "philosophers of tho Nation men who are above selfisb interest; and by the honest and patriotic soldier who loved his country better than life ; and, by the entiro body of successful statesmen, who aroearnestly laboring for the good of the whole people. Who support Greeley ? Is there a philosopher that rises to the height ol a Beecher, or Phillips, that comes to uis rescuer jot one mat nas ever been heard of. Greeley draws his support from the Tammany thieves; Irom tho disap pointed office-seekers ; from the unsuc cessful politician; and from the re vengeful traitors that have yet a lin gering hope ol destroying the Govern ment. Can any true patriot be in doubt as to which of tho two men he will vote for in November next? was advised to keep out ol his way, but as Donohue had made similar threats against other parties, he paid no attention to it. At a little after five o'clock p. rn. of the same day, while Orme was quietly sitting in Hei der's billiard room watching a game of billiards, Donohue came in :il the side door; seeing Orme he turned quickly and passed out. but almost im mediately entered tin- front door with his pistol drawn and cocked, took de liberate aim at Orme, who was betliug with his back partly turned towards him, and did not see him, and raid "lous of a b , 1 have not you now;" and before any one could Inter fere, fired. The ball first cut the pants and slightly wounded one of the par ties engaged in the game of billiards, and then passed through the fleshy part of Orme's right aim, aud entered his light breast just forward of and below the armpit, ranging downward, and lodged in the stomach, and he fell forward on his face with a groan. Donohue then ttinud a little and fired another shot at John Rodcn, which barely missed Roden, and passed into the wall. Dr. Mathews was immedi ately summoned, and alter an examina tion of the wound, pronounced it laial. Orme seemed conscious that he could not live, and requested tho Doctor not to prohe the wound. Orme wa' not armed. Ho lied in great agony until midnight, when he died ol internal hemorrhage. Donohue has since been arrested, and is now awaiting his trial in jail. We quote the following Irom the Teliama Independent : "The deceased was born in Galena, 111.; was in the 31st year of his sigf, and had resided in this county lor sc eral years, and leaves many warm friends. Was a peaceable and temper ate man aud geueious to a lault. In common with humanity he had hi faults, but they were greatly outweigh ed by his good qualities. His lather and mother, two sisters and a brother living in, or near, Jacksonville, Oie fornia and Oregon for the persevering energy displayed by him in urging upon the P. O. Department the necessity ol shortening the time between Portland and San Prancisco, for mail facilities. Tne mail is now carried Irom San Fran cisco to Portland in three days and nine hours, and Irom San Francisco loYreka in 40 hours, with a still lurther gain of time as soon as the cars run to Itedilim; City. Col. Hooker obtained a few sig natures to a petiton towards allowing something extra for a short time, and unon arriving at Washington found Congress adjourned. He presented the petition to Congressman Sargent, who visited the P. O. Deparment early in the morning and never left it nntil late in the evening resulting in recogni tion ol his wishes, and their reference lo the President a i-nuplv of days titter, and the order lo favor our people with more speedy mall lacililies. lo A.
