It is truly cool for the Democrats to propose to improve the Cojumbia river in the same mincer by the same thieving legislation. The old Whig and Republican role was to let all such jobs out to the lowest bid der, giving democrats, whigs and all others equal chances to bid on the ioji tncts. Internal improvements have always been a favorite idei among hlgs and republicans. More than thirty years a.jo tlje wings, niih,Clay and Webbter at their bead, lavored internal improve ment, and tho Democrats opposed it. Twenty-two years ago the Democratic Legislature of Missouri refused to allow a railroad I o enter her borders. All tho Whigs voted foril and only fotu Democrats favored it. Now the Oregon Democrats propose to do an important work provided the dtar people will allow them to rob the school fund of two hundred thousand dollars, and particularly if they will allow tho dem ocrats $75,000 more than is necessary to get tho woik completed by yepubfi cans. Is not this rich ? We oppose all legislation which will tako a dollar from the school fund. Ii theState has or can, get funds sufficient under a democratic tonstjiulion, which limits its indebtedness to $50,000, let us have the improvement immediately, bat .keep our M.I100I fund satred. Let the contract to the-lovvest responsible bidder; let him be lepublican or dem ocrat. Let ns hav e no more such legal robbery as the Oregon City Lock and Dam stealings. " " j Grant and the Herald.
