9 Wite li I..—Il li MM The Monarch of Colorado. _______ That Find. Our National Show. The Panama Canal A deal has just been closed iu Grants Pass by which some six cla’ms of the new Eldorado on Sucker Creek be* come tbe property uf eastern people. The sale was made through A. L. Mor ris, of Portland, secretary of tbe Ore gon Mining Congress, and the total consideration is 85000. This is the first mining deal entail ing a transfer of miDing properties in i he much-talked-of Thompson Creek district. Tbe Bi :ggs claims, for which 8100,- 000 in cash is asked by David Briggs & Sons, still remain unpurchased. The only objection found with them is that the price is excessive for the development done. Other deals are on tap in tills dis trict, and no doubt several important transfers will be made before the close ot the season. At Discovery claim the Briggs family remain camped, but are doing very little on their claim. Ttie elder Briggs, as well as his boys, believe the gull is safer in tbe gr< und thaD about an unguarded camp. Tiie claim is much in the nature of a treasure- house, and yields its gold by the hun dreds and thousands with but little digging. Mr. Briggs allows an inspec tion of the property, and only a casual inspection reveals the ledge, which has a width of 12 inches and more, resting between well-defined walls o< granite and porphyry, and is from 8 to 60 per cent pure gold. If the military authority tniy deport the miners this year it can deport tbe farmers next y< ar. If a strike which is not a rebellion must be so regarded because the gov ernor says it is, then any condition must be regarded as a rebel lion which tiie governor det lares to be such; and if any condi tion must be regarded as a rebellion because the governor says so, then any county in the state may be de clared to be in a state of rebellion, whether a rebellion exists or not, and every citizen subjected to arbitrary arrest and detention at the will and pleasure of tiie head of the execu tive department. We may then, with each succeeding change in the execu tive branch of tiie government, have class arrayed against class, and inter est again interest, and we shall depend for our liberty, not upon the cocstitu- tion, but. upon the grace and favor of the governor and his military subordi nates. “la no other case presented tc thi< court have principles so important and far-reaching been involved ....... The court has evaded the fundamen tal questionspreeented, and has based its decision upoa theories long ago de termined by juries and statesmen 10 be illogical and false.” The questions involved, Justice Steele said,“strike at t he very founda tion uf our uovernment;” and the opinion of the majority of the court, he declared, “establishes a precedent that is so repugnant to my notions of civil liberty, s > antagonistic to my ideas of a republican form of govern ment, and so shocking to m sense of propriety and justice, that I cannot properly characterize it.” To St. Louis and Return New Overland Serva ce Chicago, Milwaukee & St, Paul Railway Murder Most Foul Ml Oregon Census in 1W5 Ho!
