Besides inspecting tho lands that are embrased in the propos ed reserve they are also taking note of tho sentiment that prevails concerning its establishment. They have ascer tained that there are lew, if any, peo ple in this section of the state who are in favor of having the reserve pro claimed. Death of an Old Pioneer. James Sterling, a native of Pennsyl vania, aged 7« years, and brother of Mrs. Allen Lee, of Yreka, died in this place last Friday, having been in poor health for some time past. De ceased was one of the early pioneers of Jackson county, Oregon, where be worked the well - known Sterling placer mine. Later he went io Salmon river, Idaho, in company with bis late brother-in-law, Allen Lee, carry ing on mining at Florence City. After this he returned and mined several years on Hungry Creek, this county, working a quartz mine, which he sold a few years ago for *3,000. Mr. Ster ling was an upright, respected and worthy citizen and unmarried.— Yreka Journal. No More Pay Cars. The pay car made its last visit Fri day. No longer will it gladden the eyes of the Southern Pacific empioy- <s, for the Southern Pacific officials have decided to pay all employes by check in the future. A circular to this effect was issued Wednesday. The checks will be issued by the audi tor in San Francisco, and the pay rolls are already coming in under the new system, which is merely follow ing the practice in vogue on eastern roads.
