The conferences between the South­
ern Pacific officials and the repre­
sentatives of the traiunien's associa­
tions resulted in an increase < f 15 par
cent, to freight-handlers and an ad­
vance of 12 per cent, to passenger con­
ductors and tra’iimen. Tliis arrange­
ment was practically a repetition of
the act ion of all the other roads west
of ( lucago. '1 he men demanded an
increise of 20 per cent.
The proposed railroad routes along
the Pacific coast, mention if which
was made iu our last issue, that are
supposed to be independent of the
Southern Pacific, are b »th shorter
than the present Shast i route, one by
120 miles ami the other by at least 140
miles. It is said that the routes
selected by the surveyors guarantees
the construction of a railroad along a
grade of about 2 per cent., as against
4 per cent, and more which is exper­
ienced along the Southern Pacific line.
