Borden of Woodville attended the meeting of the Democratic county com mittee. Melvina Conklin has eornmeneed a suit for divorce against T. D. Conklin, who resides in Alameda county, Calif. During the year 1903 there will be at least 200,000,000 feet more of timber cut and handled in the State of Ore gon than last year, and 1902 broke all previous records. News has reached here that. Rev. Jesse Kirk, who went to Washington some months ago, in the Interest of the treaty wit.ii the Klamath Indians, had a successful surgical operation performed for appendicitis in that cjty. The conferences between the South ern Pacific officials and the repre sentatives of the traiunien's associa tions resulted in an increase < f 15 par cent, to freight-handlers and an ad vance of 12 per cent, to passenger con ductors and tra’iimen. Tliis arrange ment was practically a repetition of the act ion of all the other roads west of ( lucago. '1 he men demanded an increise of 20 per cent. The proposed railroad routes along the Pacific coast, mention if which was made iu our last issue, that are supposed to be independent of the Southern Pacific, are b »th shorter than the present Shast i route, one by 120 miles ami the other by at least 140 miles. It is said that the routes selected by the surveyors guarantees the construction of a railroad along a grade of about 2 per cent., as against 4 per cent, and more which is exper ienced along the Southern Pacific line. Mrs. Hattie Stevens visited in Jack sonville Monday. Mrs. S. R. Coffman of Union is in Medford, visiting relatives. T. J. Cook of Foots creek, the genial miner, was in our city Monday. C. A. Brandenburg of Klamathon is spending a few days in this section. J. B. Welch of Meadows was in Med ford Tuesday, after a load of trees. Fred Darling, of the Gold Hill livery- stable, tarried in Medford Tuesday. J. H. Blosser of Hubbard has been iu this section during the past week. Mrs. A. Orme of Gold Hill was in our city Saturday, visiting her friends. J. C. Hannah and Alex Raimey of Beagle s|>ent Monday night in Med ford. District Attorney and Mrs. A. E. Reames have returned from a short trip north. Ben Haymond and W. M. Mori is of Rock Point were Medford visitors Tuesday. Mrs. J. N. T. Miller left for Oregon City Sunday, for a visit with relatives living there. W. II. Bradshaw, a prominent citi zen of Lake creek district, spent Mon day in Medford. Miss Kate l’lyinalo is visiting in Willow Springs precinct, at the Mc Donough farm. Herbert McCarthy, who is a Pull man dining car conductor, runs be tween Ogden and San Francisco. W. H. Leeds, former state printer, is visiting in Ashland. He will soon continue his journey to California. Thos. Baldwin, J. W. Slinger. Thos. Farlow, Mr. Bradshaw and M. D. Bow les of Lake creek spent Monday in our town. A. Bieberstedt and G. W. Frey, well- known citizens of Lake creek precinct, were among our visitors during the past week. E B. Hanley and his wife are mak ing this section a visit. They are re turning from their wedding trip to California. Judge Day spent several hours in Medford Tuesday. He accompanied the remains of the late C. Morrisou to the Antioch.cemetery. Miss Bertha Orme has returned to Gold Hill, after a stay of several months in Seattle, where she has been attending a business college. Misses Frances Barnes, Myrtle Sut ton, Ollie Buffer, Martha Robinson, aud Raymond Robinson can e down from Jacksonville Sunday, and spent the afternoon here. Democratic County Conven tion. NO. 18 BRIEF MENTION. C. W. Culey and M. A. Watkins were recent visitors. Mrs. Gua Newbury made Medford a short visit Monday. Chas. Schultz is acting as circuit court bailiff, as usual. E. H. Helms was among his Medford friends a few days ago. II. E. Ankeny returned Wednesday from his trip to Eugene. Miss Maud Prim passed a few hours in Jacksonville Wednesday. Dr. J. H. Messner, our efficient stock inspector, was here Tuesday. Miss Rose Buckley of Applegate has been visiting in Jacksonville. Lowilen Bros and E. (J. Faucett of Watkins were recent visitors. Grace Eaton has gone to San Fran cisco on a visit to her sisters. Ex-Sheriff Orme of Gold Hill was in Jacksonville a short time ago. Judge Neil was in Medford one day this week, on professional business. A number of jury cases are being tried at this term of circuit court. John H. Simon of Gold Hill, the miner, made us a short visit Tuesday. to Oregon, but also one of the very oldest men in the state, being in his 93d year at the time of his demise. Mr. M. was an honest, goodbearted man, and in his younger days thrifty and possessed of much energy. He is survived by several grown sons and daughters.
