MININO NBWB. MEDFORD SQUIBS. Notice» for the location of placer and quartz mines, etc., up-to-date and complete, for »ale at T he T imes pfflee. The American Mining Code, »tand- ard authority on all subjects pertain ing to mining, water-rights, etc., Is kept on hand at T he T imes office. Miss Gray of Medford la teaching the Rock Point school. Messrs. Lawson and Ramsey of Se attle. who purchased the Golden Standard Mining Co.’s property, are In Gall’s creek district, and thorough ly Investigating the property. The Southern Oregon Oil Co.’» well is down 250 feet, the drill now work ing In alternating stratus of stiaie and blue clay. The Town Talk says these indications are reported exceedingly good. C. H. and L. C. Basye, two of our most energetic citizens, have pur chased a promising quartz mine of J. T. Cook.situated In Missouri Flat dis trict, and will commence to develop It at once. W. R. Stansell and his associates have purchased the Dixie Queen mine, discovered by T. J. Cook and others and situated in Foots creek district. The price paid is said to be $3000. It promises to be Hrst-class properly. Carter and Jay Davidson, two ex cellent miner» from Josephine county, while prospecting in Ward’s creek dis trict, not far from Woodyille, discov ered a quartz ledg<- that promises very well. It is about 18 Inches in width, ore from which prospects from $50 to $100 to the ton. It is reported that the Homestake mine, located near Woodville and owned by W. J. Stanley and others, lias been sold to parties who have means to properly develop it. Con siderable good ore has been taken out of this property; but it lias never proved remuueiative because such a great proportion of the quartz is base. Bay streak in a placer mine refers to and is the name of the portion of the gold-bearing ground that will pay at least the Hat cost of mining it; hut not including the cost of dead work. The quantity of gold in the ground required to make a pay streak varies with the costs of mining. While not capable of technical expression by the same numerical equivalent in ail mines, the term Is in commercial sense exact. Placer ground that, to mining on a commercial scale, does not yield sufficient gold to pay the com mercial mining costs is not a pay streak. The Yreka Journal, speaking of the mine loeaated at the head of Apple gate, which is being developed by parties residing in Del Norte county, Calif., says the extensive copper mine, or rather mountain, discovered by McVey & Do., on the western part of the Siskiyou, is situated a few miles south of the Oregon line, and about eight miles from Job Garreston’» medical springs at Cinnabar. It ranges from 300 to 350 feet in width, and is claimed to be more extensive than the famous Iron Mountain at Keswick, SUastacounty. The owners have been offered $150,000, but will not sell at less than $250,000. Some say if they owned it they would not sell for $500,000. The nearest point for supplies Is Jacksonville, about 25 tulles distant. The location is upon a tributary of Elliott creek, a tine place lor putting up smelting works, with tne benefit of pleuty of wood and water. Miss Jo Orth of Jacksonville was a visitor in Medford one day last week. Editor Biiton's wife and theirchil- dren have gone to Dakota,on a visit to their old home. F.
