Tin-: custom of publishing in the news papers throughout the country the list of unclaimed letters at postoffices will be abandoned, but the lists will be bulletined in the postoffices as heretofore. Acting Postmaster-General Jones has decided to slop the old custom, as congress has failed to make sufficient appropriation for the usual amount of advertising. The ex pense of publishing the list the last year was *19,000. The T imes has always pub lished the list free of charge, in its role of a newspaper. T he S. P, Co. has made a round-trip rate of one and one-third fare from all stations to persons desiring to attend the state fair this month. These tickets will be gcxid from Sept. 15th to the 25th. On freight for exhibition at the fair the S. P. will charge tariff rates when shipped to the fair grounds, but, on presentation of certificates signed by the secretary of the state fair board, that the articles have been on exhibition and not changed hands, the freight will be returned free. This will include livestock of all kinds, but will not include race horses. Fully 1000 people were at the grounds to-day. Hon. A. H. Carson delivered the address of welcome to the old soldiers rnd sailors. Following him was one by C. B. Watson of Ashland. At 2 o’clock R. A. Booth, cashier of the First National bank of southern Oregon, delivered an able and interesting address. The crowd then started for the race-track to witness the bicycle racing. In the race for males there were five starters. Fred. Welch won easily in slow time. In the race for ladies here were three starters. Miss Gertie Dimick won. THIRD DAV. Everything passed off nicely al tbe camp ground of the old soldiers and sailors. The crowd attending to-day was, perhaps, larger .han any previous day. In the afternoon the programme consisted of a tug-of-war contest by the various mem bers of the Grand Army posts. Following this came some very interesting and able addresses, one of which was on Crater lake, by Hon. C. B. Watson of Ashland. Fun began in camp as the twi light deepened, and the old soldiers gath ered around the camp fire, where jokes, yarns and thrilling tales of bloody warfare orere indulged in, while ever and anon a foraging party arrived in a mysterious and silent manner with muffled sounds of the feathered tribe issuing from beneath the blue coat. To-night the grounds are il- luminated by a large camp-fire.
