GENERAL NOTES AND NEWS.
DREAMS YOU ARE LIABLE TO HAVE
AND WHAT THEY MEAN.
'Aunt Sally** Tells What One May El-
ped When Sleep >la* Been Troubled.
If One Read» Tliene Line» lie May Know
What tlir Futnre Has In Store.
“It’s right here, ladii/» and gentlemen;
step up and have your dream* interpreted.
Here you are, now; don’t lose tiie opportu
nity. Tiie true meaning of your dream*
aud their significunre explained to you;
whether you are to be healthy, wealthy and
wise, or whether you are to lie poor, for
lorn and despised. And also you shall
know how to use them to your financial
advantage.”
Thus you are addressed by “Aunt Sally’s
Policy Players' Dream Book,” the preface
to which Mates that, “asall tiie world and
the rest of mankind dream dreams, it has
been our purpose on these ¡»ages to give a
full and clearly <1 ined interpretation
thereof, with tiie numerical combinations
applicable thereto. To all win» may desire
to tempt fortune through their own or
others’ dreams it will prove a valuable
book of reference an<l lead to the solving
of much that would without it lie mysti
fied nnd incomprehensible.“
By what right, you may ask, does “Aunt
Sally” or anybody else assume to interpret
dreams! ’Tis an irreverent question. It
should not I m * asked. “Aunt Sally” is tra
dition.
Her interpretations have been
hamlet! down from one generation to an
other. The colore«l ladies and gentlemen —
nye, and the white ladies and gentlemen—
who wrestle with fortune through the
medium of the alluring game of policy,
or “poke,” or “pokomoke,” a* it is various
ly called, accept them as g«»sj»el. There
fore must you also.
GOOD AND BAD DREAMS.
Maybe you dreamed last night some of
the dreatua meutioned here. If you did,
take heed.
Did you go to the theater and dream uf
an actress afterward! If you did, beware,
for “Aunt Sally” says that to see one ¡»lav
means misfortune. But if you drvaniv«!
that you talked with her you wiil have
success in what you undertake, and if you
rnadt* love to her your life will I m * joyful.
T<) dream that the air is cirar, according
to “Aunt Saliy,” signifies tiiat you will
come into a great fortune; but if you set a
fog in your dream you will have sorrow*.
Seek the fortune by ¡»laying the numlM*r 42
in the nearest ¡»olicy shop, an«! if you win
your sorrows Avili I mî lightened.
If
It is a very goo«! plau to dream that yofr
have new clothes; it denotes prosjienty
and happin« ss. But avoid, if you can,
dreaming that your new clothes are white.
That is a very bad dream for all persona
but clergymen. To mechanics it signifies
loss of busiiiers; to the sick, death. If,
however, the clothes are black, the nick
will recover, and if they are scarlet, it is a
goo«l dream for rich men and servant», but
death to the sick and loss t<» the poor, To
dream of wor.ivn’s ajqiarvl is good for tiie
unmarried, but to the married man it sig
nifies loss of wife ami children.
And here is the «beam for which ti...
numbers are 4, 11, 44. It is the apple
dream.
TO DREAM OF APPLES.
“Oh, to dr«'.'in of apples* ' is the cry that
ascends daily from Thompson street; an«i
whru s«»mo r. -ident of the colored colony
in that VK-in.ty does dream of apples the
news spreads quickly anti there is a rush
for the policy shops, if you dream that
you take th«* apples from a tree you will lie
persc'cutvd. h they are ripe ami ruddy ami
you eat them y«)U will have much bappi
ness. If they are sour you will shortly
quarrel with * »me one.
A v « e «I dre i- .ingthat your right arm is
cut otT; ir ir.dvate* the death of a female
relative. If h*>ih arms are cut «»fT, look out
for captivity am! sickness. If an arm is
broken or withered, sottoavs , losses ami
widowhou«l w 11 ensue. But if an arm is
swollen, sib.di’n fortune will come to a
dear friend. 1 •* dream that your arms ate
strong mean* health ami happiness. Play
3. 70.
Dreaming that you see your own back
has its ad van: ages. It denotes a fortune,
but it also d«’m> es premature old age. If
you dream that your back is broken your
enemies will persecute you an«l turn you
into ridicule. 27, 43.
To dream that you are at a ball indicates
that money a * . » be 1« ft l«> you.
Should you dream that, you .bathe in
clear AAater y u will enjoy *ood health; if
the water be mu«l ly you will hear of the
death of relatives or friends To sec a ba n
means anger; to take a warm bath, happi
ness; if the !*nt h is too h«»t or too cold, 1« m » k
out for domestic troiibh’s. If you disrobe
without going into the water yon may t x
pert trouble, mit it \%1!1 so«»n pass away.
A wa bath is a sign of h »nor ami increase
of fortune.
If you dream that you have a long lie.ird
you will live long.
To merely dream of bees signifies wealth
and success i»- businc***; but if thvy sting
you, a frivnJ will bvtr.iy you, and if the
dreamer kill* a l»ee bv will have great
losses. Seeing be**s Iviive their honey is a
sign of hom r <md fort me: but. if they fi)
into their Lives you will have losses
through enemies.— New York Herald.
The Difficulty of Telling the Truth.
People are Lad hand» .at expressing an
opinion, unless it is a va ry strong one, one
way or the «•♦her—t¡¡at is, tb<>.«e who arc
unpracticed »« ¡<1 who do not make a con
science *>f corre« t speech. But on the other
hand it must t»e admitt« d that the careful
truth teller 's sure to b«' misunderstood.
He believes v ith certain modifications and
quahtications, that is to say, answers his
interrogator, he does not lielievr at all.
Those who practice th«* art of telling the
truth must not expect to have their sin
cerity appreciated bv the common run of
men. Indeed, one who always told the un
varnished truth would deceive anylxxly.

THE
MONSOON.
A I’erlotl of Dreary su»pt*n»e in India
an«l the Joy ! hnt l'«»ll«»v.*.
Day after day the -
¡»ours d«»wn wither
ing heat, the air is sick w ith it, the ground
is hard as iron and gajM*s iu great cracks,
as though open mouthed, ph’a«ling to the
pitiless sky for u <lrop of water; the wide
expanse of country that a few months [»ast
was green and flower besprinkled is brown,
the grass crisped wit h a tierce heat and fall-
iug to powder if rubbed; the trues, mostly
evergreens, are parched and dusty; no
breat h of air rustles through, no leaf stirs.
They resemble great toy trees, with leaves
of painted wood.- There is no sound of life
anywhere; the noisy green parrots are silent
and hide from the huh in the heart of the
densest, an«! leafiest top.
You may, perhaps, see a crow or a mynah
ait solitarily on a bough, with drooping
wing and gapiug beak, helpless in this
great purgatory of fire. “The moonsoon,
the moonson—will it never come?” you ask
as you toss half nake«l on your bed. worried
by prickly heat and insects which shall is*
nameless, not the worst of which is the
persistent, blood sucking mosquito. Heat
apoplexy has, ¡»erhaps, prostrated one or
two of your friends, and a second in the
open air unhelnieted would I m * sudden
death. “Will the monsoon ru*ver come!”
Every evening the sun drops d«»wn in the
west like a great ball of fire, but. leaves the
heat liehind him. One evening you notice
with great joy two or three black clouds
climb up the east to take a ¡ m ep at his de
scending majesty. They are the mlvanco
guard, you think, of the monsoon, and it
will surely rain before morning
Morning
dawns and the sun sets to blowing his heat
furnace strong as ever; the sky is <»nce
more a great domwof burnish*«! brass. The
monsoon at last blows the naming frum
pet, and the soughing of . »> wind to tne
far away horizon calls you « ut from your
lied to the veranda. Nature holds her
breath; a gr« at calm, a strange hu.«h -the
hush of ex[»eu:a!icy—fills earth ami air.
Ha! her»» comes the monsoon. Away on
the western horizon a gr«- it black cloud
w ave surges up towanl the /••nil Ii, blot
ting out the burnished sky in its progress,
just as though you poured ink «iowly into
a brass bowl. Behind this black wave and
moving with it is a great, dense ebon iinass,
cut every instant by forked lightning and
bellowing, d”*<fcning thunder Th«* «¡nick

Now for a sc« ond, only for a second, the
quick, flashing ligtning ceases, an«! an
inky blackness, the blackness of Erebus
succeeds, and the thunder liellows as Eng
lishman in his seagirt little isle never
heard il Iwllow. It is no distant rumble,
gradually roiling nearer and culminating
in a resounding crack overhead.
No:
around alsuit and just overhead the in
fernal din never ceases.
The bellied clouds are ¡»regnant with
thunder, and the flame forks, flashing hither
and thither, pierce their wombs and loose
the thunder from its prison. It reminds
one of Michael an«l the celestial host war
ring with Lucifer and his legions. It Is ter
rihle.
InsLle your bungalow the first a«lvnncing
wind that heraled the monsoon carried wit n
it clouds of blinding dust, which is now
piled up an inch high on table an«! chair
ami shelf. A ik ! still the war oftheeie
merits goes «.n.
You cannot hear your
neighlsir’s voice, though he shout his ut
most; the bird*», affrighted, shriek in the
thickets, and the native servants huddle
themselves t< get her in dark corners for
safety. The *ky opens it** floo«l gates anil

parched earth. Splash! Splash! on the r«>«»f
