FARM AND HOUS EHOLD.
A FARMER may think lie is nmk
ing by pinching stock that ia, by
not giving them what they want.
But he is losing instead of making!
If any animal does not receive the
f< hx I it requires to keep it thriving,
it is a losing business for the own
er. Saving the feed is losing the
flesh and health and thrift of the
animal. In cold weather stock
need rich, nutritious fissi to keep
up the proper heat of the system.
They must havecarlxm, which rich
fixxl .supplies. If they don’t get
it, the cold burns up the fat in the
system, just as the fire bums the
tallow in the candle. Have the
lx*st breeds of stock, so you can af
ford to take gixxl care of them and
give tliom good attention, mal you
will make plenty of money.
S leepless N ights .—Somebody
who seems to have tried it, says:
“The last meth< xl we have heardfwf
for curing cases of pure sleepless
ness, w hen unacconipaniixl by ¡min
or di- a-se, is the following: Get
out of Ix.d and take a linen band
age, although a handkerchief fold
ed longwise will <lo as well; dip
one end of tho handkerchief into
water: piss the wet jxirtion around
the wrist; over this lay the dry
half and tuck the ends so as to
make all secure; lie down again.
The wet bandage will be found to
exercise a most soothing influence
on the pulse; this will soon extend
all over the nervous system, and
calm, refreshing sleep will be the
result”
O ne of tho most <lifiicult things
to learn nlxiut baking is to have
the tire just right. Almost every
thing baked needs a different de-
gree of heat. To bake biscuit the
oven should be as hot as it can lie
and not burn the biscuits when
they are put in, then begin to cool
uff a little Infere they are taken
out If the oven is right, biscuit
will bake in ten minutes and lie
nice and light Graham gems and
corn-cakes immx I a hot oven, but
bread requires a much slower fire
and steady heat from first to last
In baking cakes, if the tire is too
hot at first it will crust over before
it is light then burst through the
crust and mise rough.
I f you are a farmer, do not over
work your children, and thus, by a
hard and dreary life, drive them
off to the cities. Arise at a reason
able hour in the morning, take an
1 nr’s rest after meals, and quit at
five or six o’clock in tho afternoon.
Let the young pixijile, in games
and other amusements, have a
happy time during the remainder
of the day. There is no reason
why a farmer’s family should be
deprived of recreation and nniuse-
ment, any more than others.
