ALL 80RTS The boy who was kept in after Rchool for bad orthography «aid he wa» spell-lxiund. The excitement about rich placer mines «up- posed to be founl in the Palouse country doesn’t seem to be well founded. Salesmen will tell you that there is very lit tle sitting down in a store that keeps a stand ing advertisement in a newspaper. We aee by an exchange that Bonner’s rarer, Raru*. has beaten the fast time recently made by St. Jnliau in Cal fornia. He trotted a mile without a skip in 2:11|. A young lady was heard to remark in regard to her father’« snoring, that “the neighlsirs all set out their wash-tnlts, thinking that a thun der storm was coming up.” She was an Albany lady who informe«! a vi ’- tor who came to see her new house* that she was having “nicks made in the walla in which to place statutes, and in one of them a burst of her husband. ” Spain meditates carrying nut nsmemus re forms in Cuba, but will probably be a hundred years about it. If there is anythin? a Spanish official requires plenty of, it is leisure. He takes his time. At Galesburg, Ill., some one in a crowd of about 15,000 threw an eg? which struck Gen Grant on the side of the head. A reward of 9500 was offered for the miscreant, but he I could no* be found. It is ronghly estimate«! that the next census^ th- taking of which will be begun on the firs, of June next by the twenty thousand enumera tors, will show the population of the United States to l>e over fifty-five millions. A man out West has sued a newspaper for lil>el, because it said he killed a man. The newspaper wants to compromise and advises him to make the report true by killing some body. He has accepted the advice and is hunting for the editor. Did yon ever notice a poor chap that stands in the first picture of the almanac with fish and sheep an 1 scorpions and bulls and twins, •tc., aroun«! him? Did you ever notice that he was naked and had nothing in his stomach? Well, that poor fellow used to edit a pajier. Charles the Simple once remarked to his fool. Jean, that he thonght they had better change places. As Jean did not seem well pleased with the projx>sal, Charles ask«*«l him if he was not content with the idea of lieing a king. “Oh, content enough.’’-was the reply. “l>nt I should be exceedingly ashamed of such a fool.” One Saturday !ate’i\ at the old horse sale of Wells, Fargo ft Co., at Portland, a young man pnrehased a black valise for a dollar or two. He opened it and found it filled with cloth ing; also • gold watch and chain, a silver cup and some very fine jewelry of a m iscellaneous fancier. Another man paid $86 for a box of ixst year’s almanacs. If a youag lady appears on the street with her hat battered in, the general exclamation is, “Oh, how pretty!” or “What jaunty style!" But just let a young man make his appearance with his hat either knocked out of shape or set upon the side of his head, and every lady met will go stnightway home and proclaim to the household: “I saw Mr. So-and-so down town drunk.” Ran Francisco is probably the most cosmo politan city in the Unite«! States. An English traveler lately visiting there, writes: “I had my boots blacked by an African, my chin shaved by a European, and my bed made by an Asiatic; a Frenchman cooked my dinner, an Englishman showed me my seat, an Irishman changed my plate, a Chinaman washed my ta ble napkin, and a German handed me my bill. ” I n speaking of the capture of John Flame! in thio place, by Sheriff Bybee, of Jackson county, Oregon, the Roseburg “Star” says that the sheriff deserves great credit for bring ing the criminal to justice in the face of so BMBch danger. The same paper says that about fifteen or twenty of our citizens banded together to resist the sheriff, alleging that the prisoner should not be taken without a requi sition from the Governor. This is new to us. If the editor of the Roseburg “Star” should ever be compelled to Hee from justice, let him not come to Crescent City in the hope that our citizens will resist an officer who holds a war rant for his arrest.—[Cresrent City Courier. E fvuct ov M ountain A ir .—A young lady from one of our valley towns, disappointed in leva last spring, pined and pined to a shad ow, and to save the necessity of ordering a pine coffin, her friends sent her to Hood River. After feasting on the mammoth vegetables and luscious fruits of that region, breathing the mountain air and drinking snow water through the Lunar months, she returned home weigh ing 150 pounds, and is now watching for a chance to whip the man who threw off on her. ^^o D ay ’ s W ork .—Rev. J. R. N. Bell is a vorter, as the following will explain: Ijmt S.ibbath, after a han! week's work in the T-achers’ Institute, he rode some forty miles, preached two sermons and niarned two couples in different localities. All this work was per formed between “sun and sun,” altho' the r«a«ls were in a terribly bail comlition. Bro. Bell appeared to enjoy it, as he was “frisky" as ever on the morning following, and says he enjoys those kind of things.—[Plaindealer. How T hey S ue I t .—The Yreka “Journal’’ sees an advantage to be gained hv the farmers of Northern California in the building of a good wagon mail from Jacksonville to Crescent City that has not been mentioned prominently heretofore. The fact of onr farmers finding a much better market for their produce than Siskiyou county offers will relieve the Siskiyou farmers of the “ruinous competition,” which they now complain of at the hands of Southern Oregon farmers. CALIFORNIA ST., Castoria JACKSONVILLE, OREGON, Mlllioaa of Motkora express their delight over Cutoria. It is uaturo’s rsusdy for spasimila ting ths food.
