The Wasffington correspondent of the Eu­
gene Journal says that on Dec. 14th, in the
U. S. Senate, Senator Grover presented a
petition signed by about one thousand citi­
zens of Oregon asking Congress to extend
the time foi the comj>letiun ol' the Northern
I’acjtie Kailroad, ahd to apply a portion of
it^ land grant to the construction of the Dor­
land, Salt Lake and South Pass Railroad.
Friday, December 28th, three vessels, the
Nimbus, Pilgrim, ami Abervstwiih, were
crossing the barat the mouth of the Colum­
bia, when all three were somewhat injured.
The heavy blows receive«! by the Nimbus
started the seams and eausetl her to leak
badly. The water continue«! to rise rapidlv
in the vessel, so that the crew were couij>eli-
ed to abandon her to her fate. Her cargo
was completely lost, but insuiance, it is
thought, will cover that. No lives were lost.
Some fifty years ago a poor <>1«1 woman in
Ireland had her cottage pulled down over
her head by her landlord. Her name was
Mollie Maguire, and she «lied of grief and
exposure. Therei»j>«>n her son and some
neighbor lads formed themselves into a
secret band, and vowed to take tierce re­
venge on Irish landlords in general. Tiie
band sj>read rapidly and they called them­
selves the “Al**, -c Maguires,” and Irish
