I C ure for D iphtheria .—This terri- al»le disease seems to be only partially understood by even our best physici ans. It has attacked whole families of children in the Willamette Valley and has made its appearance in this county, and sometimes has not left one little one behind. If it is possible to find any remedy for the scourge, that rem- edy ought to be published everywhere. We give herewith what purports to lie the means used by a certain English physician, Dr. Fields, who, it is said, has never lost a case, lie takes a tea spoonful of flour of brimstone and mixes it in a wine glass of water, us ing his finger, instead of a spoon, in order to more thoroughly dissolve the sulphur. This he uses as a gargle, and allows the patient to swallow it. The brimstone kills every species of fungus in man, beast or plant. If the patient cannot use a gargle, the Doctor places the brimstone on a live coal, and al lows lhe sufferer to inhale the fumes. Sometimes also when the throat is fast closing he has blown the sulphur through a quill into the throat. This will destroy the fungus, and then the gargle may be used. The room may also be filled with the fumes of burn ing sulphur, and the patient allowed to walk around in the room. It is at least worth trying. Diphtheria or Not. J acksonville , October To THE fl on OH OF THE TIMES: 9, 1877. I see that a correspondent on Applegate pronounces the epidemic prevailing there membraneous croup. All ineclical men know that croupy symptoms follow diphthe- ria when the disease extends to the larynx and trachea (windpipe). The disease, as it prevails on Applegate, attacks the tonsils fauces and extends to the larynx and trachea in the fatal cases, producing lhe croupy cough. Where the disease could be seen in the throat there was the peculiar exudation which is characteristic of diphtheria. It is of the malignant type. The disease I be* licve t,o be infectious, but doubt its l>eing contagious. When early recognized it yields to appropriate treatment. L. D anforth , M. D, PerMoiml Note*. i ! Singer. Bay a Singer.
