Six of the negroes made a confession implicating their fellow prisoners and divulging a plot for the murder of the white men of the village and capture of the women; 20 of them were in the conspiracy. Of the 16 arrested 13 started from Lowndesville to Anderson, the inten tion being to send them from Ander son to Abbeville by railroad. This roundatiout course was adopted to pre vent lynching by men said to be on the direct road from Lowndesville to Abbeville. The prisoners st a i ted for Anderson Saturday under a strong guard, but up to last evening had not been heard from. It is rumored they have been intercepted and lynched by a party from Georgi t, but no confirma tion of the rejMirt has reached Charles ton. Two of the prisoners had been hurt when captured, and the party may have stopped on the road to ease the wounded, especially as the weath er has been so cold. — ■ -I- . - Ax exchange paper says: “There are no business men In the world so subject to the sponging process as pub lishersof newspapers. It really seem- that public corporations societies and associations in general, and many per sons, have a funny notion aoout pa pers. They think we ought to print, puff and publish all for nothing, tha: is, free gratis. In other words, they seem astonished if we ask half price only for an obituary notice, card of thanks, tribute of resjiect, a personal communication, or anything else that only interests a few persons, and not the general reader. They forgot that it takes money to pay the compositors, to buy ink, type and paper, and lastly, they often forget to thank you for gra tuitously serving them or the public.” ' —— < ♦ » II I —I N ovel P residential C hairs .— Seth Kinman, of San Francisco, hun ter, trapper and Presidential chair-mar ker, has finished the job and is wait ing for tidings from the doubtful States before calling in an expressman. Io 1856 he presented Mr. Buchanan with n chair made of elk horns and hoofs ; in 18C4 he sent Mr. Lincoln one just like it ; and Mr. Johnson was favored with a chair made of grizzly bear skins and claws. The Presidential chair of 1876 is like Mr. Johnson’s, but underneath the seat there is a fe rocious looking head, which is thrown forward by means of a spring. The Jaws of the grizzly snap viciously, and then the head returns to its place of concealment.— Oakland Transcript. G ood A dvice . —Girls, let us tell you a stubborn truth. No young wo man ever looked so well to a sensible man as when dressed in a neat, plain, modest attire, without a single orna ment about her person. She 1 oks then as though she possessed worth in herself, and needed no artificial rigging to enhance her value. If a young wo man would spend as much time in cul tivating her mind, training her temper, and cherishing kindness, meekness, mercy, and other good qualities, as most of them do in extra dress and ornaments, to increase their personal charms, she would, at a glance, be known among a thousand. Her char acter would be read in her countenance. ■ ■*• ♦ — ■ 1 AFTER a QUARTER cf a CENTURY The J. C.
