This is an affair of the utmost, impor tance, and the citizens should know who they are electing to that position. The character and qualifications of Silas J. Day, the Democratic candidate, are well known to all. For twenty- three years he has been a resident of this section and is thoroughly acquaint ed with its every want. His great experience in county matters alone makes him well qualified for the place, and while all concede his ability none can say aught against his in tegrity. A better man could not be found, and the people can rely upon having the affairs of this respon sible and important office transacted in a prompt, efficient and Judicious man ner. Can as much be said for Harrison Kelly, the Pizzarinktum candidate? Unfortunately not. Compared with I Mr. Day he is almost a new-comer, having been here but a few years. Entirely unacquainted with many por tions of the county, his knowledge of our requirements is limited indeed. ‘ Although a lawyer, his qualifications are by no means equal to those of his competitor. Unknown to a large number of our citizens, he is also wholly untried and in no measure a suitable occupant for the office of Coun ty Judge. If the people of Jackson county, ir respective of party, desire to have the. man for the place they certainly will not hesitate to vote for Silas J. Day under any circumstances. Swamp Land. The swamp land contests which were pending before the Linkville Land Office came up for trial on the 15th Inst, B. F. Dowell, Esq., appear ing for contestants, and Major Q. A. Brooks and C. A. Ooggswell, Esq., for the State. Upon motion of the attor neys for the State, the cases were con tinued until the 7th of July. It is understood that the object which the State seeks to accomplish in these contests is to establish the fact that the lands in contest are «swamp and overflowed,” so that if patents are issued to the settlers the State may gvi li«n land- for her swamplands. The italics are ours, and we ask that the public study them well, for it will easily see how utterly deceptive this resolution is. It is a piece of the smallest demagogism and only in tended to create a cheap reputation for their cause with the people of the country at the expense of the citizens of Jacksonville. I T he Pizzarinktum sheet endorses C. B. Watson as its candidate for Pros ecuting Attorney. Unfortunately, its endorsement is entirely gratuitous, for Mr. Watson does not in any way en dorse or take stock in the party which It represents. The “People's” Journal. Such is tho title of the little one- horse sheet issued yesterday afternoon by tho Pizzarinktums in the interest of their ticket. It is decidedly a flat arrange ment, to say the most, and a great disap pointment to its partisans. Tho greater por tion of its space is devoted to a labored de fence of its candidates and in reply to the T imes , while the balance is simply a rehash of what has heretofore appeared in its pre decessors, tho Press and Review. The only thing remarkable about tho sheet is the misrepresentation it indulges in and the cheek displayed in claiming its party as ono having principle. Judge Watson’s ear marks are plainly apparent throughout. Poet Laurente of Lake County. Refuses to Follow Them Off. The Albany Democrat of a late date says : Some of the Jackson county Repub licans went into a coalition with »(»re head Democrats and nominated an In dependent ticket, and now tho Jack sonville Sentinel, the Republican paper of that county, refuses to support the Dolly Varden hermaphrodite or in any way countenance it. We honor the Sentinel for its straight-forward consis tency in this matter. When men de- sert their party and wander off after strange gods and in search of the flesh- pots of Egypt, we are in favor of letting them reach the goal of their hopes without any assistance from those whom they have betrayed and deserted. REAMES BROS., GENERAL MERCHANDISE, CLOSING OUT! T T sive and well-selected assortment of D anforth and Wrisley, of affidavit fame, no doubt felt like crawling into their little holes and drawing them in after when Dowell pulled those much- lied-about letters from Chadwick on them in town last Monday and con clusively proved how utterly false were their affidavits and the reports peddled broadcast by Kelly and his Pizzarinktum compatriots that he had ever proposed a combination with Chadwick to run a straight Republican ticket for tho consideration of having the judgment on the May bond stay ed until the Legislature met. They wore cornered and could not squirm out of it, much as they would have desired to. i It is understood that O. C. Apple gate, Republican candidate for Repre sentative and Poet Laureate of Lake county, has modestly tendered the ser vices of his muse to the Centennial, provided they will advance him suffi cient funds to pay his fare to Philadel phia. To induce the committee to fork over, ho accompanies his proposition with the following specimen of his ly ric genius : Tho “bard of tho Cascades” is a pootical wonder, Who says ho ain’t I’ll thrash, by thunder ! T he Pizzarinktums are endeavoring to make a point against Mr. Manning by impugning his Democracy. The people are too well acquainted with him to believe any such balderdash. His reputation as a sound, uncompromis ing Democrat and a honorable, high- minded gentleman is too well known for any Owen-Bybee slanders to impair his strength in the least. It is certain ly very impudent in this office-seeking crew to doubt anybody’s principle, especially as they have none them selves. REAMES BROS. Jacksonville, Feb. 12, 1875. P olitics in Josephine are quite in teresting. The late Independent Con vention was a fizzle. The Democrats drew out of it and almost a straight Republican ticket was nominated. The Democrats will doubtless carry the county as of yore. They should by all means leave nothing undone to elect their whole ticket. HUNTERS’ EMPORIUM! —AND- TO THE VOTEES OF LAKE COUNTY. Grover’s report to the Leg- islature, in answer to Senate Joint Resolution No. 10, October 9, 1874, we find that O. C. Applegate has filed upon 700 acres of swamp land ; L. B. Applegate, 1,500 acres; I. D. Apple gate, 700 acres ; Jesse Applegate, 392,- 000 acres. Now, O. C. Applegate, who is tho Republican candidate for Representa tive of Lake county, is attempting to make the people believe, in spite of these figures, that he is not. a “swamp land holder,” and, in order to do this, his brother Lucien comes out in a card, stating that O. C. Applegate has never filed upon any swamp land, and that he (Lucien) was the only member of tho Applegate family that has paid the 20 per cent, on these lands. This is a very weak excuse, as the Applegates certainly filed upon this swamp land, as Lucien admits, and it matters not whether they did or did not pay the 20 percent. At all events, O. C. Appplegate will not succeed in convincing the voters of Lake county that he has filod upon no swamp land when the official report of tho Gover nor tells them the contrary. T. G. REAMES. E. B« REAMES.
