R ailroad E xtension .—It seems
to be the general opinion-and expressed
intention of those connected with the
C. P. R. R. Co. to extend the rail
road from Reading to Dog Creek the
coming Summer, a distance of about
thirty-seven miles. The railroad com
pany, we hear, is also selling land
along the proposed route, to lie paid
for without interest, when the road is
completed, uj>on receiving a patent
from the Government. Unless this
road is built and an opening made to
California from the Klamath Lake
country the business of that vast coun
try, now being settled up, will go east
over the proposed Winnemucca road.
It is undoubtedly the great induce
ment which causes the construction of
the Winnemucca road, without any
subsidy, further than the right of way.
Most of the valleys in that section are
covered with grass from three to f\ve
feet deep all the year around, and
water can be obtained far away from
the streams by digging a few feet into
the ground. As soon as railroad com
munication can allow settlers to com
pete in agricultural products it would
soon become one of the greatest and
most extensive farming sections on
our broid domain, not even excepting
the great prairies of the West on the
Atlantic side of the continent. The
C. I*. R. II. managers visited the sec
tion above named last Summer, and
are undoubtedly extending their lino
with a view of tapping it, for tho ben
efit of their California road, knowing
full well that unless they do the entire
business, in the way of supplies, will
be transacted with Eastern merchants.
