Or g cœorratic Simes. FRIDAY, MARCH 19, 1878. F or the C urtovs .—-A lady aged 20 marries a gentleman aged 40 and is of course two-fourths as old. At the end of 40 years she is 60 while he Is 80, she of course being three-fourths as old. Now if she has gained one- fourth in 40 years how long will it take her togain the other three-fourths and be as old as he ? Why do black sheep eat less than white ones ? Mr. John Smith (widower) and Mrs. Sarah Jones (widow) were married, each bringing children by a former marriage into the family. In this new family 5 of the children belong to Mr. %nith and 4 to Mrs. Smith. How many are there in the family ? Ans. 8. There was a room with 8 corners. In each corner sat a cat; before each cat sat seven other cats and on each cat’s tail sat a cat How many cats in all ? Can 12 gentlemen be lodged in 11 rooms, each having a room by himself ? I should think so, unless there is some flaw in the following: 12 men applied for rooms and there wereonlyll forthem. “But,” said the Whiter, “if two of you gentlemen will go into No. 1 room Hl see what I can do for you as soon as I have attended to the others. Thus having left 2 men in room No. 1, he puts the 3d man in room. No. 2, the 4th into room No. 3, the 5th man in room No. 4, the 6th, in room 5 and so on up to the 11th man in room No. 10, then coming back to room No. 1 where the 1st and 12th men had been left, the waiter said : “Now if one of you will step into No. II you will find it empty and at your service.” A poor, blind beggar had a brother who died, but the man who died had no brother. What relation to the beg gar was the man who died ? We are told of two men who met each other at an inn and greeted each other affectionately. The hotel-keeper asked of one how he was related to the other, who replied : The Law of Newspapers. 1. Subscribers who do not givo express not ice to the contrary are considered as wish ing to continue their subscript ions. 2. If any subscribers order the discontin uance of "their newspapers, the nublisher may continue to send them until all arrear ages are paid. . , 8. If subscribers neglect or refuse to take their newspapers from the offices to which they are directed, the law holds them re sponsible until they have settled the bills, and ordered them discontinued. 4. If subscribers remove to other places without informing tho publisher, and the newspapers aro sent to the former direction, they are held responsible. 5. The eourta have decided that refusing to take newspapers from the office, or re moving and leaving them uncalled for, is prima fade evidence of intentional fraud. 6. The postmaster who neglects to give the legal notice of the neglect of a person to take from the office the newspapers ad dressed to him, is liable to the publisher for the subscription price. AX e can assure our old patrons that it is kept fully up to its high standard; and it is the only reliable and perfected prep aration for restoring G ray or F aded II air to its youthful color, making it soft, lustrous and silken. The scalp, by its use, becomes white and clean. It removes all eruptions and dandruff, and, by its tonic properties, pievents the hair from falling out, ns it stimu- ( lates and nourishes the hair-glands. By its use, the hair grows thicker and stronger. In baldness, it restores the capillary glands to their normal vigor, and will create a new growth, except in extreme old age. It is the most j economical H air D ressing ever used, as it requires fewer applications, and gives the hair a splendid, glossy aj>- pcarance. A. Some have thought the habit resulted from the presence of small parasites, as minute as the red spider of some flowing plants, which produced an irritation, and to allay this the sheep acquired the habit of biting Its own skin, and thereby eat ing its own wool. It is generally be lieved that the habit is analogous to that of hens eating their eggshells, and the abnormal appetite of cows for old bones, woolen rags, etc., and is caused by an exhaustion of the phos phate in the soil. Old pastures and fields that have long been cropped are deficient in these elements, hence the absence of them in feed, and conse quent want of them by animals. As a preventive, mix a small quantity of bone meal with corn meal, and give them an occasional feed. Sulphur, also, has been found to be a preventive of the habit, and many farmers keep their stock constantly supplied with it.
