L00 JACKSONVILLE, OCX., SATURDAY, SEPT. 27, 1873 VOL. Ill PROF ESS ION A L (ARI IS. OFFICIAL DIRECTORY CORBITT <fc MACLEAY, HOW TO III Y A HORSE. Front the advance sheets of Rev. W. 11. Murray’s new l»ook on “The Horse,” we extract the following : Be sure that the horse you purchase has symmetry, viz.: is well propor tioned throughout. Never purchase a horse because he has a splendid devel opment of one part of his organization, if he is lacking in tiny other. Above ail, keep well in mind what you tire buying for, and buy the horse Ix st adapted to the work you will require of him ; and when such tin animal is yours be content. Never jockey. An occasional exchange may be allowable ; but this daily “swapping” of horses ad vertise* a man’s incompetency for any thing higher. Another caution is this: Never purchase a horse until you have seen him move, and under tin* same conditions to w hich he will lie exposed in the service you will expect of him. If for draft, see him draw’, back, and draw round in both directions ; if for the road, see how ho handles himself, not merely on level ground, but going up sharp declivities, and, above till, in descending them. In this way you w ill ascertain the faults or excellencies of both bis temper and structure. In these exercises drive hint your self. The reins in a skilful hand, aided by the whip or mouth, can be made to conceal grave defects. Let him move w ith a loose rein, so that he may take hi' natural gait, and not his artificial ; for, by so doing, you will detect tiny mistake of judgment you may have made when looking him over in a state of inactivity. Many a time un-otind- nes- will appear in motion, which no in'i»ection of the eye and finger, how ever clo-e, can ascertain. W hen you have walked him and jogged him, if he is to serve in any other than mere draft purposes, put him to bis speed, and keep him at it for a .sufficient dis tance to test his breathing capacity ; then pull him up, jump from the wagon, and look at hi' Hanks, inspect his nostrils, and put your ear close to the side of his chest, in order to as- certain if the action of the heart i' normal. If this exercise has ^caused him to perspire fret ly, all the lietter ; for you can then see, w hen you take him back to the stable, whether he ••dries oil'’ quickly, as ail horses do in perfect health.
