While at Eugene attending the meeting of the State Central Commit tee, we took occasion, in company with a number of other gentlemen, to visit the State University building, now in course of construction. By the courtesy of 1 Ion. XV. W. Bristow and the architect in charge of the work, we were conducted through the entire budding so far as it has progressed, and shown also the plans and eleva tions of the* structure. It is 112 feet in length, including a projection of eleven feet at either end to he used for vestibule and .stairway purp,».-»*s. The width of the building is 55 feet 6 indies, and it will be three stories in bight afewe tiu* basement and includ ing the Mansard. The basement is I1 feet 3 indies between joists, and is de signed for furnaces for warming the rooms ttbove, and for store-rooms, it is high and airy enough for class rooms, should it become necessary to have such partitioned oft*. The first story above the basement, which i-to I »e reached from the lawn by a broad flight of steps at eith< r end of the building, is it; f»»et between joists, and is divided into six r< m »ms, four good ones oil one side and two large ones on the* other, ' There j tire five class rooms. The next story is to lie divided into three rooms, o e being the full width of the interior of the building by half its length, making about 52 by 12 feet, The two rooms will be about 12 by 2»> each. Then above thi> story comes flu* Mansard, which is to be is feet ill tilt* dear, and is to be finished till in one great hall. The building will be a very sym- metrical and handsome structure, ¡is shown by the elevations. The first story above the liasement is now up, and the Work thus tar is doing in the. most substantial manner, The foun- dation is down Io the solid bed rock so that it is imjM>ssi!,]o for it to settle. The dose times in money matters have retarded the raising of the moneys contemplated by l^e act locating the State University at Eugene, so tiuit it may be necessary to ask for an exten- tion of time in which to complete the required work. The vigor and energy with which the work has been pushed thus far is a pledgi* that the conditions of the law will be fully complied with, and it would be but reasonable to show as much leniency toward those who •are engaged in the enterprise, as is consistent with the public interests. Of course, this single building will no' always supply the wants of the State, but it will answer well lor a long time, ¡tnd will never be out of date, or unlit for use.— Oreyonian. Dr. L. DANFORTH.
