H eavy F rost .—Some of the heaviest
frosts known to the oldest inhabitant
fell every night this week. The hills
and roofs of houses next morning aji-
peared as though a young snow storm
had been raging the night before, and
everything in the shape of a vegetable or
plant left exposed, was done for. Water
.in the house was frozen to quite a depth,
and so heavy was the frost, that the
sun’s rays, which shone brightly every
.day, hail no effect in thawing out the
ground. This is exceedingly rough on
the stockraisers.
T he S prague R iver S ettlers .—
From Col. Alvin Cobb, who was in town
this week from Sprague River, situated
in the locality of the late Indian out
break, we learn that the settlers im
mediately assembled at one of the strong
est natural positions in the neighborhood,
and have collected al) the families in that
aectioo. They have themselves securely
fortified and venture out only in bodies.
Had not these timely precautions been
taken, the settlers might have met the
sjm ! fate of those on Lost River, as they
are situated between the Snake and Mo
doc tribe*, whom the Col. says are allies.
The settlers are well armed and provided
to defend themselves against any ordina
ry attack from tho Indians, and with a
man of the cool Judgment and determin
ed will of Col. Cobb to direct them, will
doubtless sustain themselves from the
dangers that threaten them.
